| We are considering a move to Melbourne in the next few years. Why? Better life for two boys now aged 3 and 6...... want them to have the best through their school years outdoorsy, sporty and good quality schooling, without the scariness that you get in Manchester. Am I being too optimistic? Would love any comments. By the way I've heard nothing but good about Melbourne although I've never been there. |

I'm born and bred in Melbourne, and am currently relocating to the UK for work, but will definatley move back to start my family.
Melbourne is a fantastic city, and Victoria is a beautiful state, its the perfect place to bring kids up, with loads of oppurtunities from education to sporting, through to artistic and musical.
Crime rates are relatively low, and there are loads of things to do for both adults and kids, Victoria is starting to become the sporting capital of australia, not to mention the Arts mecca also!
I say go for it, you wont regret it! |

| Thanks for your very positive reply, and good luck with your move to the UK. Have been looking at websites for houses, do you have any ideas which areas would be better......... for schools, parks, and maybe a nearby leisure complex?? Am I asking too much? |

It really depends on your budget, where youre going to work, and what you do for fun on where you can live.. Melbourne itself is a small city, and you most likely wouldnt live in the city itself.. more likely the surrounding suburbs.
Fill me in on those things and ill suggest a few areas you might want to look at.
Cheers

Have you considered Perth? Admittadely its the other side of the country to Melbourne, but its warmer, cheaper & more beaches.
Ive lived in Melbourne for 2.5yrs, and I love it, and you can still buy homes within 10kms of the city for under $400,000AUS (although getting rarer), however we are moving back to Perth because of the standard of living we are used to (Husband and I are both from Perth) |

I am traveeling around SE Asia at the mo and have met countless people born and living in Melbourne.
They love the place and highly praise it. It seesm like one of the most culturally rich and friendly places in Australia, try it out, you can alwys come home if it doesn't work out. |

| Im a UK born chap lived in australia many year as I came with my family at a young age. Some immigrants love it ,depending on what they have left behind in the old country! Before you leave the UK are you going to miss your parents or important family?Write down what yiou like about England and what you think you will be getting away from.Ignore the TV impressions as they are deceptive and misleading. You will be 14,000 klms away from the UK, im a country that can be very Hot and totally alien to a UK person .I lived in Melbourne many years and its changed greatly as has the UK.But if you have a house to sell in the uK and come with about $600 thousand dollars (about 250 thousand pounds)your laughing, if you have a good profession to get the well paid jobs. The Federal Government will be no help to you as they have screwed every one and ruined the social security system. So if your not self sufficient stay in the UK.The Education system is probably better that the UK depending on what you can afford,Private school have huge fees.Public schoold can be just as good if you find the right one.I was once a school teacher so I think this is a fair comment.Once your kids grow up University is now a luxury as its all huge fees, so I dont think leaving the UK, will help them that much, if they want a really good Uni Education. As for sport well that up to your boys but how can you tell what they will what in 10 years time? Quite honestly they will probably want to return to the country of birth. So do be very cautious as to how to go about such a major decision.Believe me ive seen it all before and some UK people suffer greatly coming here but other love it.CHEERS. |
