What is ENGLISH or BRITISH culture?
What would you personally define as traditional English or British culture?
Is it under threat of being diluted or even disappearing?
Do you actively promote or contribute to something that you would define as English or British culture? |

I think you're pulling my leg about the tartan bit
Good point though DG, We should open this up to include Scottish, Welsh and Irish traditional cultures. |

| There isn't a single English or British culture. I’m British born, a Londoner; and, have experienced different cultures across time and place in England and Britain. |

Yup... you'd be correct although I do have a very fetching tartan skirt!
And I lied... the postie is never on time!
But we do celebrate Burns night and there are daily bagpipers in Princes Street! |

This is exactly what I'm saying Bombasticspastic, there isn't a single English or British culture - Everyone has a different perspective on what they define as Brit or English culture.
Depending where they live in the UK, their personal interests etc.
You see what I'm saying?
Nice name by the way |

I think Aussies tend to say this cause when the Brits come out to Aus they whinge about it being nothing like home...which is kind of the point- its nothing like home, and why should it be....why travel half the world to have things (aside from the weather) exactly like home!!! Personally I find the Brits aren't the worst at this....Americans....feck sake, if they aren't talking at ear deafening levels they are moaning about how the world doesn't get them and isn't anywhere near as fabulous. Ego-monkeys!!!! |

I'll yell you what it isn't
| Quote: | "The UK is the number one target of Islamic strategies in the West...
The former British Empire controlled some of the largest Muslim communities. Immigrants from these countries... have taken full advantage of Britain's liberal politics. It would be a huge mistake to say that Islam is just another religion... Islam is a whole system: a social, political, religious, economical, educational, legislative, judicial and military system... with regulations that govern every aspect of the lives of its adherents."
Sam Solomon, a former imam and Islamic lawyer, describing the "creeping" Islamification of the UK in the July 2007 edition of Witness magazine - 12 July 2007. |

I couldn't agree more, have you not noticed the escalating number of Islamic extremists who are getting thrown in British jails with only a deportation order to look forward to at the end of their sentence? |

I was replying to jangos post, there is an ocean of difference between 'muslim bashing' and stateing facts ie that Islamic fundasmentalists are being convicted and incarcerated in British prisons. |

For me, British or English culture is about a large number of things
Some of which are...
Regional dialects/traditions/customs/festivals - the UK is really one big melting pot full of weird and wonderful little gems. Where else would you find people chasing cheese down hills and bog snorkelling?
Eccentrics - The traditionally emotionally repressed Brits have long expressed their true personalities and interests behind (semi) closed doors. Look no further than the outstanding book 'men and their sheds'
Speaking of repressed emotions....why do you think come summer time throughout the land people flock to the countryside spending weekends under canvas getting ripped to the tits at music festivals?
English grub - fish n' chips, roasts, pies...
English beer - where do you start?
British music - Now here is something we really can be proud of
British comedy - World class
Sport - er, ok, maybe not at the moment
In my opinion, these examples of typical British culture are in no danger of being diluted or wiped out as has been suggested could happen with the influx of different cultures to these shores.
Come on folks, we spend enough time slagging off Britain, whineing about the weather, bitching about the people, complaining about this and that, but at the end of the day we still have a hell of a lot to be proud of. We're lucky. |

It's funny, when you analyze Britshness in recent films, they all seem to be about fighting for our dying way of life and surviving an invading force: Shaun of the Dead, 28 days later, the film about infertility in the future (can't remember name). Strange though eh?:

| There is no such thing as British culture. There are things the English do better than anyone else, such as drinking and puking in the streets, their foul mouth, the worst behaved children, the worst food in the world and the most unattractive people I have ever seen. |
