Hi There

A friend and i are off for a 3 month adventure in south america, leaving in just under 2 months. We are going to argentina, bolivia, peru and equadow - if anyone has any general tips, recommended places to stay and see, places to avoid etc etc please let me know. Also, how much should we budget per day if we are going as budget travellers Laughing $40 a day?

Lastly - those of you who went to equador - did you take anti malarial tablets - i am lath to take them because of the side effects and would rather take something less sickening! we are not going to be in equador very long and it the last country we are going to and dont want to be sick for the last couple of weeks..

Any replies are much appreciated!

Thanks

Rach

yep i wouldn't bother with antimalarial tablets - better to just be careful with physical protection like nets, clothes and sprays. I took pills in Africa and still got malaria, and the pills mask the result when you go to the doctor so it can take longer to detect. got side effects also. Get some quinine sulphate tablets and if your urine turns orange or red then start taking them and get a stock of bogroll in. Go to the doctor soon as though as you need antibiotics as well...not to be messed with once you have it.

Anti - malarials - just be careful, use repellent and wear long shirts...
If you plan to do the Inca Trail in Peru, book well ahead.
yes, you should be able to get by with some comforts on US $20 per day per person... thats not too many nights out or "gringo food"

Has anyone used Kumuka to travel through South or Central America ?
Am looking at doing 1-2 tours with them and backpacking the rest myself for a few months.
Any recommendations for a girl backpacking solo ?
