| Hi - I'm due to fly into Mumbai at the end of November for a couple of months and was wondering if anyone else fancied meeting up/travelling around? I'm planning on fitting in goa, hampi, varanasi, rajasthan, pretty much everywhere really! I've heard that India is a really dangerous place for women to travel alone, so am trying to get a few like minded people together and maybe to try and meet up beforehand in London. |

India, the exotic land of the East, is an amazing travel destination. Be it the majesty of the Himalayas or the splendour of the Taj Mahal, the calm of the Kerala backwaters or the piousness of Tirupati - every corner of India has something to enthrall the mind a traveler. It is no surprise therefore, that the country has become a hot tourist destination in the recent years, with visitors all over the world coming in to experience the rich cultural and geographical diversity of the country.
Most tourist spots in India have colourful markets that sell a wide array of local handicrafts, gift items, curios and other nick knacks to visitors. If you planning to shop in these local markets, do not forget to bargain hard. Shopkeepers tend to ask exorbitant prices for their goods, and you can often get an article for half the quoted price. Tipping is an usual practice in hotels and restaurants, but the amount should be restricted between one to three dollars, as per the service availed.

yeah... I do have plan going to India. Fly to Mumbai and travel around using trains and national flights. I hate 'organized' holidays
Is it difficult for foreign people to travel in India alone? |

Travelling in India alone as a female is not dangerous. As always be careful not to display too much body; particularly in Moslem areas, out side of beach areas and exercise natural caution.
I travelled there for several months on my own and never had any bother but I had a few near misses, particuarly in accepting invitations to dinner from guys and then having to prove I wasn't in fact a whore just because I was travelling alone and unmarried. Wear a ring, make up a story about meeting family somewhere etc - again areas differ.
Generally it is difficult to not meet Western travellers whereever you go and I only every spent 5 days without speaking to one (Nepal to India on bus).
Travel light, stay healthy, don't try anything dodgy and if you decide to get high be sure about your location and company.

Hai Friend,
It's nice to hear that you are going to visit INDIA by November.
I can recommend KERALA for you. It's a beautiful part of India only 5-6 hours from Goa by train. I'm sure you are going to have a nice time in INDIA.
Thanks |
