Oil rig employment or scam?

I was searching the internet recently looking for oil rig employment opportunities. Apparently there are a lot of sites out there just taking your money without delivering a service at all. Could you advice me on a reliable agency dealing with this type of employment?

my son who is 18 is hoping to get on to the oil rigs
does any 1 know if any company will pay for the survival certificate or does he have too pay tht himself
hes very keen to get on oil rigs he has very good qualifations, but im hoping some 1 may know more about this line of work

dont want to be a wet blanket but 18 year olds with no experience are a dime a doz i did my again this year and there were 3 or 4 on the course who were paying for it them selves. some said well it'll show an employer im keen, yup but so are many more with more experience.

dunno if theyll even take you offshore at 18 might have to be 21

friend of mines son has packe d in a 2nd year joiner apprenticeship to do the course and try an get a job, i think he is crackers but supposedly he knows someone yup in the pub andwhen he has paid and done the course suddenly no work, i ould nt recommend it

hi was wondering how you go about getting into the rigs i have been working with scottish stampings for last 5 yrs making axels for volvo an am being made redundant an wanted to go on the rigs also worked at dikies stamping before that closed too so not shy to had work .i am willing to pay the survival course fee .im a hard worker and would like to pursue this. are there agency or anything that i could join ?

not wanting to rain on your parade but im afraid without experience or any relevant skills you dont stand much chance. doing the offshore survival/firfighting course would cost you about £400 and would be money down the drain.

you could try getting the aberdeen press and journal on a fri which is when the jobs are in or look on line at www.thisisnorthscotland.co.uk or google employment agencies in aberdeen

you may want to try the advice i gave above, but i am in the oil industry for quite some time now and with oil at $52/barrel there wont be much hiring of inexperienced people.

monty mate i am a welding supervisor in the shipyards in govan must be some areas which i could start applying for
all trained in health and safety which is most important these days
my brother works on brent bravo as a spark and wanna earn some dough like him

google employment agencies for aberdeen

yellow pages for aberdeen employment agencies etc

get up here for the weekend and trek down union st

oil has dropped below $50/barrel which means most oil companies will be cutting back plus xmas perod is never a good time
but theres still a lot of work going on

tried press and journal but nothing there mate
i must have something for bae to make me a supervisor at 30 mate
would even consider a change in direction just to get my foot in the door
from what ive been told average age of guys offshore is very high and they are screaming out for younger guys
if this is the case they should try retraining of some people

re P and j just depends on the time if they are needing punters i suppose.

re supervisor yes i agree

re ageism yes lot of guys in their 40's and 50's but again, oil price goes down, investment goes down. welding isnt my field but the majority of the platforms are feeling their age now and a lot of word is needing done. have you tried any of the aberdeen employment agencies? might be worth taking a fri off and a wee jaunt up on the train.

I post on a car forum called The Mitsubishi Lancer Register....It's basically the Evo Owners Club, anyhoo, quite a few evo owners work offshore and if you use the search function on the site you'll see quite a bit of useful info on it.

what do you do?

might be better waiting till the oil prices go up . google for employment agencies in aberdeen, check the wanted section of www.thisisnorthscotland.co.uk google oil jobs.

Hi, I have been working on the rigs for the last 18 years on a worldwide basis currently based in the Far East. Personaly, right now, I would not advise anyone to enter the oil and gas industry but that is up to the individual. Sure the money is good and pays very well but it does take a certain type of personality to work out there and not everyone will be cut out for this kind of life.

There are many ways to look for employment in the oil and gad industry. If anyone asks for money to find you a job then that is an obvious scam because employment is free to everyone so what ever you do, DO NOT PAY ANYONE TO FIND YOU EMPLOYMENT.

As for doing your off-shore survival, I would not pay for that by yourself. If companies are looking for new people they will pay that for you. If you have the right skills they will take you so paying for it yourself does not nessicerily make you look keen.

There are many websites you can go onto but you'll probably find they are looking for experienced people:

If you have many good qualifications and you are young enough visit the websites of BP, Shell, Chevron, Woodside, Oilsearch or Amerada Hess or Exxon Mobil.

A good starting point is the major service companies in the UK such as Expro, Schlumberger, Halliburton and Q-Serve all based in Aberdeen and Yarmouth. Check out their websites and you never know, you might just get lucky.

As for me! I am looking for a way out of this industry after 18 years. You will find that after a while you become trapped and the chances of finding a shore based job that pays better are very very slim.
If anyone does need advice drop me a line and I will let you know if someone is trying to scam you or not.

there have been a few 1 off posters on here asking about offshore

everyone is different of course

but they tend to lack any appropriate skills and tend to think they are going to make a fortune

the ones who have self sponsered themselves on the combined sea survial/firefighting course are wasting their money i think.

You are absolutely right. It is a total waste of money sponsoring your-self for the off-shore survival course and you are right again:

You will not make a fortune working off-shore. I would say the salaries are above average but nothing great but if you do have the experience level after between 8-10 years and you become a self employed consultant off-shore then you will be extremely well paid but will not make you rich.

Working off shore has cost many guys there marriages and it is a big sacrafice to spend about 65% of your time away from your family.

Most companies at the moment are streamlining and getting rid of people. My advice is either find a niche in the market at home and start your own business or go back to college and train for something new.
