Hi- I'm moving to London in Septemebr and wanted to find people interested in starting a housing collective, or at least interested in cramming a few more people into each room than reccommended in order to get cheap ret, but am not having much response so far. Is this something people in London just aren't interested in, or is it something that isn't going to happen until I'm there and can meet people for myself? Thanks,
Fia |

hi there
It is called a houseshare, not a collective. That is why people don't read your ad. Also, people do not want to live like dogs in kennels. People want to share a room with MAYBE MAX 2 people (if it is a triple room, with en-suite bathroom), or one other person. ---no cramming of people into rooms- for that you get a hostel.
The result of cramming people into rooms is that you need to buy more kitchen tools, plates etc. Need to have lots of fridges, storing space etc.
Who wants to bother?
Move into a room, located in a house, where your bills are included! Best way to go mate!! |

There are some housing cooperatives in London which own and manage their own housing and often charge rent to their members significantly under market rates.
There are squats in London where people take over empty properties and have limited legal rights to stay there. Some people regard them as heros for having the nerve to occupy empty properties and other regard them as pests and scroungers.
There is probably commune type housing somewhere in the city, though probably allied to weird and wonderful philosophies (or sects..)
But what you seem to want is a private rental agreement that lets you cram in all your mates just to save a few bob. This isn't very community minded in spirit as the tenants will have little privacy and a low standard of living while the landlord is likely to get their property damaged.
That's known as taking the p*ss or illegal sub-letting. |

There are houseshares operating in london, where people rent their own room, or rent a room with a friend/partner/spouse.
If you rent a whole house, and tell the landlord that you are planning to sublet, and he gives permission(wich is rare), you can do that. the thing is that then you have to be responsible for bills&council tax.
It works out much cheaper to rent a room. |
