Thanks for your fast answer.

Even if Western Union is untraceable, don't you think that they can do something thanks to the name and the address of the receiver?

It will be fake.

They will have provided a fake ID, likely used an internet cafe so as to make the IP details pointless. They are not even likely to be from Italy at all. Have a look at the source IP of the emails they sent you, and see which region in the world they came from. You've no chance. And, even if they had been lazy, and given you a real ID, and that the police would be able to act, they are likely someplace like Nigeria or that, where they police will not be able to get them anyway.

It's an expensive lesson you've just bought yourself.

Always do som research, and never ever ever ever send money by Wester Union and the like.

Thanks a lot for that answer... I've been scammed so easily, i was looking for a flat... 1200euro is a lot for me, as a student ;-(

I was not thinking to the fake ID... so, the money seems to be lost.

Thanks again,

For information, I copy/paste one of the message Jane Becher sent me :
It seemed to be really trustworthy

I am sincerely sorry for my late response as i have been having a very busy time with my work and my studies aswell,so i never had time to check my mail this past days but i am through now and will respond rapidly to your emails.

However the rent again per month is 350 euro + utilities of 50 euro is to be paid just once which covers the whole of utilities you are to use in the room and a security deposit 600 euro, which is refundable at the end of your stay in the room. The 600 euro which Will be refunded to you is for a security deposit and it has to be refunded back at the end of your stay.

The total amount for you to pay as a first timer is 1000 euro where 600 euro shall be refunded to you if at the end of your stay nothing was destroyed as agreed in the room by either your or any of your invited guests. Like you know the 600 euro is for security agains any damagies that might be incured by either you or your guests.

Like i also told you, there are only two rooms vacant for rent in my 3 bedroom flat where we shall share only the living room and the kitchen, but you have your private entrance and bathroom and toilet.

Theres no problem reseving a room for you ,providedyou can comply with these procedures/terms of transaction and show some commitement by paying a deposit and first month rent which include utilities,so you dont need to pay any bills again.

My house is located at Via Meravigli 13, Milano 20123, Italy

My house is very close to bus stations and you do not need to worry, the next station is about 6 mins by walk from my house but though not indicated in the google maps,so you might not see it but transport is not a problem at all. Like you know its located in the central heart of Milan linked to many parts and close to the post office, cinemas, groceries, central market and bakeries aswel.

I am sorry,i cannot afford to send to you the contract documents now because i need to confirm your full interest in my room and if you can abide by the stipulated terms,so if after showing your full interest in my room, then we can continue with the contract.

1.You need to read and understand and sign an agreement form that will guarantee you that the room has been reserve for you.

2.The deposit and the first month rent has to be paid to my Mother through western union money transfer in London, because after the death of my father, all the rest of my father's assets are being handled by her and so she collect the monthly rents.

But to prepare the contract, please get back to me with the requested details below:

1.i'll need your full name, and your move in and out date for our family lawyer to prepare the agreement/contract between you and me together with your current home address where the original copies of the will be sent, together with the reciept of payment which you shall bring while moving in.

2.A scanned copy of your passport is needed for verifications becuase i shall send mine to you also upon request.

Let me know if this is okay by you because i have been deceived by unseriuos people on this room issue and that is why my attorney advised me to request for the deposit and first month rent being paid to my mother before concluding agreement with anybody.

NB: its written in the agreement form that your money(deposit) will be returned to you after your stay in the house. It is also stated that the tenant has not seen the room physically but has been sent pictures,''If tenant arrives at the room but the pictures look different from what
is seen physically, you have the right to act on me and your money will be paid back to in full with transfer charges if so demanded.''

The rental agreement contract document will be sent to you first through attached mail for you to read and understand the terms and conditions applied as my flatmate, after which if you agree to them, you will proceed with making you payment to my mother,i'll now
send you the original copies and other rental papers together with the reciept of payment through a registered courier to your given address for you to sign and bring along when moving in.

It takes 2 business working days for the original copies of the contract and receipt of payment be delivered to your house address given after payment confirmation from my mother.

I'm stupid...i almost fell for this scam...thought something was dodgy and then got almost exactly the same email from someone else. These people are the lowest of the low.
The names of these two scammers are

julietjohnson21@yahoo.com
mc.sandy351@googlemail.com

Please everyone be careful. If it's too good to be true...then it obviously is. Let's make it as difficult as we can for these low-lifes to get our money.[/url]

I have been emailing with 'Amy shearer' (amy351@googlemail.com) about her 'amazing one bed flat' near Victoria station for 800 pcm (#19383827).

She says she lives and works in leicester now and that this is her own flat, very concerned about someone responsible staying in it since it is her personal home, etc. I am obviously interested after seeing the beautiful photos of the flat, but have now become suspicious.

She says that she has taken time off work and spent money to travel to London several times now to find out that the viewer didn't have the money/wasn't interested/wasn't ready to move and she has asked me to come up with some way to prove that I have the money for first two months rent and a security deposit. She specifically says not to send bank statements because it is unsafe and she has not mentioned Western Union, but she's asked me to think of some way to show proof of funds.

My plan was to go to my bank tomorrow and have them draw up a letter. That is, until i found these threads about scammers on here... I did google her name and email address and found nothing, but when I googled 'amy 351' I found an older posting from her that you can only view as cached, but it was for a 2 bedroom in central London at GBP900 pw and it had the same reference number:
____

A Neat and Spacious Double Bed Flat in Wood Green (£900 pw)
Reply to: amy351@googlemail.com
Date: Saturday 2nd February
Date available: 12/02
A NEAT and SPACIOUS DOUBLE BED FLAT with double bedrooms, fully fitted kitchen, bathroom, with garden for car park, and close to Shopping malls.
Conveniently located on Gladstone avenue, moments from Wood green Station, A great location and neat environment. IT IS A MUST SEE!.
____

Could this be genuine or do I just move on? The use of english is not great - some grammatical mistakes in the last 2 replies, which is what made me suspicious - that and her pushing for proof of funds.

Posting this to help anyone else who might be tricked, but also to see if anyone else has had interaction with this person.

Thanks.

Amy shearer (amy351@googlemail.com) just sent me the following and I have already reported this person to gumtree.com. This is such a shame - I rely on gumtree for accommodation and now I can't even take the ads seriously:

Hi Stephanie,

I had earlier warned you about sending your banks statements via the internet and If anything happens, i dont want to be apart of it. I also do not have a friend who is free to help conduct the viewing that is where im doing it myself. I'm as keen as to meet you are to meet me too and i think tomorrow monday may be a good day.

I told you i was going to speak to my lawyer about it and infact i just got off the phone with him. He gave an advise and i think that is the best option for us...so what i will like you to do is that you should go to any western union money transfer outlet close to you to send the first 2months rent and the refundable deposit, in your name to your friend's name in your present address or your friend to send the money to you in your present address.

Scan and send the transfer receipt via email for confirmation if the money is available for any of you to pick up. we will both go and pick up the money together then you pay me up. Whatever cost you incurred would be returned back to you at the meeting even if you dont like the flat which i'm sure you would. You will not be loosing anything after all.

If you can get the western union done tomorrow by noon then we can meet for viewing on still tomorrow in the evening from 7pm.

Hope to read again from you soon.

Best Regards
Amy.

Hello there, it seems that amy351 has been busy. I've been corresponding for a couple of days with 'Gary McCathy' a 'radio producer' from London recently moved to Leicester. (Email address mc.gary351@googlemail.com [why use the same numbers if you've already been busted at least once?]) This guy is pretty good, he offered a nice flat at a not ridiculously low price, sent photos that seemed to be cogent and in context, and his english was really pretty good. You can sometimes spot in certain turns of phrase that it is probably not his first language, but he seemed to be responding genuinely to my requests for information etc. Finally of course he started on requesting proof that I had immediately available funds, I suggested a bank status letter (you have to pay about 10 pounds, but it's pretty irrefutable proof that you have funds and does not divulge any personal details) or a guarantors letter as well as numerous references from employers, past landlords etc. He wasn't having any of it and as I started to get suspicious (his english was deteriorating - as I took him further out of his usual repartee I guess) and asked "what do you suggest?" cutting to the chase as it were. This morning I got the following

Hi,

I actually had same understanding with someone who turned out to have conned me in making me to make the trip. I was lost of how we could resolve this earlier.

I told you i was going to speak to my lawyer about it and infact i just got off the phone with him. He gave an advise and i think that is the best option for us...so what i will like you to do is that you should go to any western union money transfer outlet close to you to send the first month and the refundable deposit, in your name to your girlfriend's name in your present address or your girlfriend to send the money to you in your present address.

If you can get the western union done tomnorrow, I will gladly ensure that we meet for viewing on thursday or friday in the evening from 7pm.

Hope to read again from you soon.
Best Regards,
Gary

He's been shipped to gmail abuse this morning, keep an eye out for this chap. Note this correspondence was as a result of my replying to a flat offered posting, not his replying to a flat wanted as seems to be more usual. the original details of the post were: ad #19730639: STUNNING ONE DOUBLE BED FLAT

happy hunting everyone!

Hi everyone!
I am so naive!! though that i found the bargain of the year till my husband opened my eyes. 2 people were offering me flats in centre london for the amazing price of £600pcm all included and £350.00pcm.

Posted by , jean_boutier@yahoo.com, simeontob@gmail.com AND by ola2shine@yahoo.com.

One was asking me to post the money by Western Union before seing the flat.

The other one I sent a response asking for her suggestions for the deposit and meeting day and she did not come back to me yet....

This is quite desappointing cause, how can I expect now to find a flat through Gumtree??

Where is the trust? And how can I now if they are really thiefs??

I agree with your comments when you say that all these people have horrible writting. So difficult to understand their b....emails!!!!

So can anyone tell me if there is still a possibility to find accommodation in this website without being ripped off?

Cheers!!

Thanks for you reply and the Question you ask me..The reason why i dont allow people again to come for the viewing unless i give him/her the agreement form to sign is because of my past experence and i dont want such think to happen to me again..I'm the owner of my flat and i have promised myself to to take anyone to my flat unless the person sign my from and realible to pay the Security deposite..Some month back i took two people down to my flat for viewing and they stole some of my goods and 500GBP from the flat,so it is very hard to trust anyone now and i dont want such thing to happen to me again so that is why i dont give or take anyone to my flat expect him/her as signed the agreement form..That will show how serious is the person and then i will take the person down to my flat and view it..So i know by now you will know the reason why i want you to sign the agreement form, just to lincence you to my flat and if anything get lost it will be clear and understand able for the court to do or ack for the stolen goods..

nicolaspaul001@googlemail.com

couldn't string a sentence together and also sittingbourne now has a tube (or as he put it "tub") station!!!

pinkelle2002@hotmail.com

has a house in sidcup apparently

Ash@p-ventures.co.uk

seemed fairly normal through the emails, i even got to view the flat in maidstone. came to an arangement and then he disappears off the face of the earth. BE AWARE these flats in maidstone are still being advertised on this site, they are two bed, two bath new build apartments. half the site is still under construction and there are lots of the huge signs for housing associations and the typical keyworker offers there. after checking the developers sites they are being sold privately as well but they are not cheap and i cant see the rent even covering the mortgage.

Apparently a (seemingly well off) Brazilian graduate who has been travelling back and forth the last few years, and bought the flat before starting studies. 'She' is bored with living alone nr Victoria tube and is renting a room 400pcm inc with 400 deposit. Her language seemed pretty good at first, then: I really want to settle something asap and this is really good for me, can you please send me the following details so that i can send to my lawyer to prepare the tenancy agreement contract and then you can go through the terms and condition of living in my flat to see if it all suits you or not and then we can take this from there...... (Full name, current address, phone number, move in date, duration of tenancy and date of birth).
She hasn't asked for money yet but I'm just waiting.

Hello

There are quite a few scammers on the Aberdeen site. Most of which are written in bad English and wanting money for a viewing either via western union or moneygram. There were also a couple working under seperate email addresses yet offering the same flat but at different addresses and again wanting money grams.

here's the most recent
elenaklimova01@googlemail.com

Once i told her it was ridiculous to ask for money for a viewing i didn't hear from her again.

Even though there are a few scammers there are some legitimate people on the gumtree site.

I JUST HAD TO POST THIS AFTER I CAME ACROSS IT ON AN ADVERT I POSTED FOR A ROOM. tHE PICTURES THIS PERSON SENT YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE THAT SHE WAS LETTING THE PLACE OUT AT THE PRICE GIVEN, THE EMAILS JUST MIRRORED OTHER EMAILS AND POSTS THAT I HAD READ ON THE GUMTREE FORUM. i AM SO GLAD THAT MY CURIOSITY SHOWED ME THE EVIL PEOPLE THAT USE GUMTREE AND PRY ON PEOPLE THAT ARE GENUINE. AFTER RECIEVING THIS EMAIL, I THOUGHT I WOULD SHED LIGHT ON THIS BITCHES NAME AND EXPOSE HER. bECAREFUL NOT TO FALL IN THIS PERSONS TRAP, SHE SEEMS GENUINE, UNTIL YOU READ THROUGH THE LINES AND I HAVE SEEN HER NAME ALREADY ON THIS SITE FROM OTHER PEOPLE COMPLAINING, ITS A SHAME THESE TYPE OF PEOPLE LIKE TO BRAG ABOUT WHERE THEY LIVE, BUT THEN MAKE OTHERS SUFFER TO KEEP THEIR NASTY BACKSIDES IN IT. PLEASE PASS THIS ON, SO THAT NO ONE ELSE CAN BECOME THIS EVIL DEVILS VICTIM. HER EMAILS ARE AS FOOLLOWS, (YES, SHE SAID SHED PROVIDE A PASSPORT, BUT SERIOUSLY, YOU CAN GET PASSPORT FOR A £500 FROM SOMEWHERE AS I SAW IT ON TV ON THE BOARDER SECURITY PROGRAMME AND ALSO ON PANARAMA. SO DONT BE FOOLED. REMEMBER THE FAKE NUS CARDS ONE COULD GET AT UNI??? THIS IS NO DIFFERENT, EVEN STILL, IT COULD BE NICKED AND THAT JUST SHOWS WHAT TYPE OF IDIOTS WE HAVE TO LIVE WITH...)

Here is a listing for a flat for rent at 609 Queens Quay, EC4 for £1733/month which works out to £400/week, not £400/month
