| as for the living costs, London is certainly not your best option I think. |

| ...and Edinburgh is quite expensive as well. A lot of people are going to London without a job and try to get one when they are there. This can be very tough. It's probably better to organise something before you're here. Think about what you can do better than others (e.g. speaking your native language, special skills...), then look for organisations who might need you. Good luck! |

| expect to pay about 60 pound a week for a tiny little room all to yourself in a crappy area. if you want a decent size room in a nice area then about 100 pound a week or more. have a look in the accomodation section to get a rough idea of costs. |

Dear Yidan,
If you would like to consider a placement as Paying Guest ,this would be with a British Family where they would be able to provide you with the following:-
Bed and Breakfast Only £100.00 pw.pp
Half Board.....................£130.00 pw.pp
Full Board......................£150.00.pw.pp.
(reductions on charges for stays of over 4 weeks).
This would be with families who live in the London Suburbs approx 35-45mins travel from the Centre of London via the metro.
If you should require further information please contact
JOLAINE AGENCY

Sara,
I got here at the end of June last year. I'm a Software Engineer and found that there was a bit of a dip in the market.. took around 4-5 weeks to get a contract job. That said, my gf is a secretary and got a job no problems - so it also depends what industry you're in. October should be ok, but i'd definately recommend not taking any longer. Traditionally the market will dry up a little when you get closer to Christmas / New Years (although apparantly it didn't really last year). |

| Thanks guys, appriciate the help. Except you pete, you are rude. I was thinking about Cornwall cos of the surf but i dont know much about it. Can anyone tell me wot it is like jobs wise and living expenses. I have experience in all sorts of things but i think i will just stick to pub work as it is a great way to meet people. Im a little bit worried as i will be short on cash whwn i arrive after travelling on the way. I think i am just after a little assurance that i wont starve to death. Thanks again, any more advice would be fantastic! |

Have a look at TravelStay.com for budget accommodation prices. In the summer there are University rooms at some very cheap prices.

hey. i was in a similar situation a couple of months ago but everything turned out fine
its good to not assume you have to stay in london to find a good job. there are plenty of other big cities, less expensive to live in but still with plenty of job potential. i ended up working in the north west which was great.
a lot of useful sites out there to help too, as well as the arleady listed below i found www.backpack-uk.com good. you arent alone! |

It depends on whether your priority of coming to the UK is to work or to travel. If you want to work, London will be a good place to start cos many companies employ staff on contract basis. I am assuming that you are here on a working holiday visa?
Before you leave your home country, its best if you can start submitting your resume to some local recruitment agencies like Michaelpage or Hudsons. But of cos, it also depends on what kind of jobs you are looking for. Summer may not be the best time to look for work cos key decision makers tend to go on summer holidays with their kids. But hey, no harm trying.
Once you arrive in UK, stay in a hostel first cos its more cost effective. If you have friends here and can bunk with them for a while, that would be good. Or you might like to try this www.couchsurfing.com. You can always find a room to rent after you get a job.
Bath and other places like Bristol will be abetter place to visit as part of your tour rather then to find a job, especially if your VISA is not a long term visa.
good luck |

If you are looking for a summer job in Britain, why not get hold of the book "Summer Jobs in Britain"? There is a link to this book on this page:

| Hi all those that have replied - My missus and I have been living in Gloucester for a month and a half now - it is a fantastic location to see everywhere else in England - Bristol and Bath are within an hour and a half - London is a couple of hours - we are on the Wales border - I am working in recruitment and the missus is teaching - heaps of all kinds of work - airports nearby so I think this place is ideal - and fairly cheapish. (compared to Bath/Bristol/ London etc!) Good luck. |

| Well, like I said, Im going to be in the U.K. in October. Was wondering if anyone had any info on work in pubs, etc. The reason Im so worried is because after my Aussie dollars are changed to pounds, Im fairly well broke. Wont be able to afford to not work for very long. Ive mainly worked in pubs and hotels, reception and other hospitality but i have a year of aged care and a bit of child care. Do you guys think I will b ok in the job hunt? I know that there are lots of people from other parts of Europe looking for work too. Help! |

Hey Sara
You should definately get in contact with an Agency called Miracle Workers - you can speak to Carol or Miriam (01873737908). They are based in Abergavenny South Wales but you will only go there for one interview. The do live in care work and it pays £450 upwards per week. The placements are all over the country so you get to visit many places. I am currently working through them and it is really good. If you would like any more information about them/the work please e-mail me - lilith_za@yahoo.com |

ok heres what ive found from my experience!! london is fun but expensive,, pretty easy to find work any time of the year really especially if you have hospitality exp.
depending on exactly when your going to get here,, edinburgh would be a good option if your gettin here around july cause the festival is on and there is heaps of jobs around the place, edinburgh is such an awesome city.. my favourite place ive lived by far!, not too expensive living costs,(at the moment im paying £250 a mth for my own huge double room in a flat with only 2 others??)
and as for cornwall.(lived there last summer) its so much fun,, if ya like to party it rocks.. i lived in newquay and there were millions of jobs but really hard to find accom if you get down there later than july.. cost wise not too bad:(my place was 2 min walk from the beach and cntre of town, doulbe room sharing house with 5 others £60 a week.)
good luck and dont worry really youll have a blast!!
cheers. |
