To be honest, never trust someone with bad grammer! I even rung a number he provided before this email and could barely understand what he was saying. He said his name was Gregory Forbes but judging by his accent, he was foreign. I'm 19 and even I have the common sense to know not to give money before you view, and Gumtree had already warned me about Western Union so at least there doing something. I told the guy I wasn't interested enough and he said thanks and goodbye!

What I wrote then ....and never heard from him again!


We have gladly offered to show you proof that a transaction has occurred to prove that we have the money but on no accounts will we give you a copy of the receipt and leave money with Western Union in London. We are not comfortable doing this and have been advised against this by Western Union.

The only transaction of money will occur when we are in the Apartment along with the lease and keys.

If you still wish to continue they are the only grounds upon which we will do so.

I've been chatting to a guy called oliver in Greece about a flat right in Piccadilly for £125 a week. He wanted a similar thing where whoever sends him the moneygram first he will fly over from Greece to meet them to show the flat. I nearly went a head with this. (just like Anna Louise Sebastian also said to me today).This is the third scammer I have seen since less than 24 hours!!

Well firstly i want you to know i sure understand how you mean,But you see these is due to previous predicament that i have gone through in the past trying to rent the property to some student,i have got to realize so many people are not really in need of an apartment all they do is secure a place in advance,My last experience in trying to rent the property to a particular lady had got me to predicate on these,she made me believe she was willing and ready to get the apartment she even went to the extend of showing me her statement of account,which made me took her for the viewing but after taking her for the viewing,sher saw the apartment and got to love it and never wanted to loose it,so she kept pleading i retain it for her because she is not financially composed at the moment,which i did but end up disastrously.

Concerning the rent bill,i will like you to know the rent bill is not really my problem what matters to me is that you take good care of the property like yours,But the rent bill is 500 per month and 600 for the deposit which is your tenancy agreement and will be refund back to you if no damage is done to the property,but the rent bill is inclusive of all utilities,inclusive of all bills.

Hi everyone…just wanted to share my experience as well. I am coming to London in September for my post grad and I had posted an add here. There was a particular response which really fascinated me coz he was offering me a one bed flat for GBP200 pcm…..it sounded too good to be true. Anyways, I had no idea coz I have never been to the UK.

Later he insisted on a “PROOF” – transfer of funds through Western Union to a friend in the UK or to myself. Later I suggested paying him cash through a friend in London but he was adamant that I send the money through WU. After a month of responding to emails I have given up…

I have even got responses from different people at different addresses but with the picture of the same flat.

I sure am glad I didn’t fall for the scam….I would have if my friends in the UK hadn’t cautioned me.

I posted an ad on Gumtree and specifically put 'no Western Union or the like scams to contact me' Even still, I got three responses to my ad and the only responses I got were scammers - all asking for the money transfers.

She uses an English name but clearly has very poor command of the English language. She forgot to change her template too and suggested that my wife can get the transfer to her account... even though I'm a woman.

He claimed he is working in Glasgow and about to move to Italy so needs to know that the money can be paid prior to booking his flight.

Oh please, come up with a better name than that! Claimed that she lived in the area but still wanted to get the transfer before even allowing me to view the apartment.... why.... because there is no apartment!

Anyway, just posting their details for you incase they contact you on these particular email accounts. I have also reported them to Gumtree. It's a shame as it's impossible to keep up with it due to the fact they just keep setting up new email accounts. It makes me wonder if there is a better place to advertise for apartments wanted that vet responses therefore you don't get these scammers wasting your time. If anyone knows of one, let me know - even if it's a paid service, better than dealing with time wasters.

My advice to anyone considering doing the money transfer, DON'T! If the Gumtree forum and their clear warnings aren't enough to turn you off, do a google search on Moneygram scams and Western Union scams - it will shock you!
