Hey twiglet man, I've got an idea.. why not move the results page EVEN further down so you can't see any listings? That would be an improvement wouldn't it? Then we can look at all the irrelevant type in bold and scroll down to read the ads (which is er.. what we want to see isn't it?)
Also, great idea to make the advert font so thin it's hard to read, yet leaving all the surplus info on the rest of the page BOLD. Really makes sense that one.
Example: http://www.gumtree.com/london/4923_1.html
And purplehead, what's the point of asking for feedback on the new look then ignoring it eh? |

Sorry to hear that angeleyes - the new look to the pages won't have affected your ads though so something else must be happening.
To find out what might be the cause and to contact us if you still need help with your ads please see this Help page:

What has happened to Gumtree?
I have been using the Gumtree since i arrived here 5 years ago. It has been a great source of entertainment and information for me and i am sure many others in that time. What i have noticed during this time is a definate shift in the culture of the Tree, it has changed a lot. Some of it i consider good and some not so good. It used to be a more open community space where freedom of speech was acceptable. Now however it has become more of a police state where posts are deleted based on harmless content while other posts are left to be. There appears no logicial approach to how posts are deleted, they just go and an email pops up in your inbox telling of its demise.
You have to wonder who the faceless, nameless administrators are that determine what is and what is not appropriate content. Is there a guideboook that they are using or is it a more personal thing, based on their opinion of what is acceptable and what is not. There certainly is no order to it.
I myself had posted and reposted 4 times over the space of a week. Each time my ads where accepted and posted. Then suddenly, out of the blue i try to repost them again yesterday. I wait and wait and wait for the admin team to do their bit, nothing, all day nothing, no ads appear. Its not until i get home from work and log in to my email account (as i had done at least 8 times throughout the day) and what do i have, emails from Gumtree Admin informing me that the content of my posts, which was acceptable the day before and had not been edited are no longer acceptable content. What the?
Gumtree, what is going on? Who is god that decides that something is acceptable one day and not the next? Perhaps you have noticed the comments (that have made it through) about posts being deleted or not accepted due to content. This did not happen 5 years ago, why now? What have you achieved by making the changes to what people post?
Gumtree you are not a patch on TheGumtree. |

Twiggyman, the best possible site was exactly how you had it before.. it's just changes for the sake of it. If it aint broke don't fix it!
How can making all the irrelevant type bold, yet making the ad font thin be better? It's confusing and tiring on the eyes as you want to read the ad but are drawn to all the other stuff around it because its bolder!!
Also, the search results page layout. You've just got a couple of featured ads peaking over the bottom of he screen (laptop) and you now have to physically scroll down to see the others. Great for the couple of paid ads, crap for everyone else AND the users. |

Hi - I have been using Gumtree to search for accomodation for around 4 weeks and would like to make some suggestions on how to improve the site!
- Refining a search simply doesn't work properly - you are given properties outside the price category, without pics if you've asked for pics only etc.
- How about making the price range clickable so you can search from high to low or vice versa?
- And the area - so that you can click on an area and view all the properties for that area?
- Change the color of the last link you viewed so when you hit the back button, you can find your place easily.
- Make the save function to automatically save even if you log off.
- Sometimes adverts are repeated on subsequent pages.
Please pass these suggestions on to your webmaster!
Thank you. |

The old style was MUCH MUCH better. Having the photos next to the ad link was MUCH better than aligning it all to the right. The new style looks cleaner, but it isn't as user friendly!
Bring back the old style plz. |

I can only assume team Gumtree are using big screens.
Try looking at a typical search results page on a 13"x8" monitor. That's a typical laptop size, which most people now use.
Trust me, it doesn't look right when you have loads of empty space at the top, and just a couple of ads showing above the bottom of the screen. The whole thing needs moving up a bit. |

Hi quietzapple,
You have a valid point. We spent a loooong time talking about this very issue, and we know that it's important to get as many ads as possible "above the fold". This was one of the reasons for the new layout, in fact - with the old design, the ads were slowly but surely moving further and further down the page as we added new features.
However, as I'm sure you've realised, it's a compromise issue with other aspects of the new design; we need that "loads of empty space" for other bits and bobs, some of which are features we'll be adding in the future.
Two things you might be interested in:
1. At least 86% of users have a screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher (see www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp for the trend data), so 1024x768 is now the lowest resolution we target, rather than an exotic luxury.
2. We have been trialling an alternative position of the subcategory lists on our Dublin site (see here: www.gumtree.ie/dublin/jobs_2242_1.html). We don't want to make it harder for people to find the subcategories, but this does help move the ads further up the page on top level pages.
So while the new layout is here to stay, please don't think we're not listening. |

Thanks purple for coming back..
Dublin one looks much better showing more ads, although personally I'd still use the space at the top for all the features/search tool. I take your point though if you intend adding new bits
Re the screen res, yes I agree most people are on high res, which is why I don't understand why you've made the ad font so much thinner?
My eyes what to concentrate on reading the ad, but I feel them getting drawn to bolder type on the periphery. I think the ad font needs to be slightly bolder. I'm on high res too, and it just seems really really thin compared to all the other stuff going on around it.
By contrast the "weight" of the font on these forum pages is perfect. |

[quote="twiggy"]In case you haven't already noticed we have just introduced some changes to the listing pages and the ad pages themselves, including:
1. The new format is widescreen so you need to scroll across a ll the time
Need a button to accomodate people using older screens if youre going to do that
2. Far too much space on the page which could be filled up with stuff
Too much scrolling around
This site is now made for designers, it may superficially look good but its no longer easy to use.
Gumtree was a great web design
I recommended it to web design friends.
Now it has sunk inot the usual unfunctional and not particularly attractive approach.
Gumtree was great! When comes such another?
Where (btw) is the button for CLASSIC VIEW? |

Great changes, the ad page looks more up to date and professional, the pictures have more impact with the new placement, and the contact details are not lost in the context. It's more easy to spot the ads with pictures, too.
Job well done |

Thanks everyone for your comments.
We are really sorry for the recent site issues that some of you may have noticed or experienced - but don't worry it had nothing to do with the new design.

Based on feedback we are currently working on the photos on the results pages. We will be introducing thumbnail images so that you can see a small version of the actual photo without having to click into the ad. We hope this will make finding ads you are interested in even quicker.
We have tested this with users and it was really popular but we will launch it on just a few Gumtree's first to find out what more of you think. Watch out for announcements on this.
And please keep the feedback coming! |

Hi,
I like the new format - and introduction of a Skype name to the ad, however the "Call me" Skype link is not working correctly when you have an underscore in the Syype user name such as "mrpc_bristol" - as your system publishes this as a space i.e. "mrpc bristol" which is incorrect - can this be changed ? |
