Why not you stay at home and put up the tent in your back garden?

I used to love that when I was little, and invariably you have enough midway through the night too so it's pretty time-efficient for the parents Laughing

Laughing Yeah... I'm sure you'll have a great time, kayaking, fishing, get on the cross-country bikecycles, make fire, grill some hotdogs, go look for forest-food (berries etc - don't poison the kid though, only let him eat things you *know* are safe)... teach him how to navigate with map & compass, take photos of wildlife (birds most likely but maybe you're lucky and have a close encounter with a bear Laughing ) Cool

It's a lot of fun and shouldn't have to get all that expensive, usually you can rent all the relevant equipment!

Be careful with the whole kayaking thing though, maybe just a bit of calm paddling about on a lake rather than down a stream as the currents can get faster than anticipated. You know there was the famous case in the news recently about the novice family who went out and the girl of a pair of twin-kids died when their kayak went round and the dad only managed to safe one kid Crying or Very sad

Yeah I just wanted to alert the danger potential too, safety first, you being a novice at the camping thing and all! It's fun to be adventurous but just keep the highest safety precautions (I'm sure it goes without saying) but still, don't have the kiddo go on a difficult level 5 hiking trail etc and then fall down a rock cracking his skull open.

Just nice kid friendly stuff with high vigilance (so maybe don't smoke pot while you're out there eh?)

Well I'd obviously advice against it as you never know what might happen at anytime 24/7 when you're in nature etc but that's your choice. It's likely he'll wake in the night etc since presumably he's not used to camping and I don't know why you want him to see you like that.. kids do notice.

I didn't think so either but it's noticable all the same when someone's been smoking and I don't think it will be part of a good experience if he wakes up and need help in the dark to go to the "bathroom" or suddenly has a freak allergic reaction to a bug bite or a snake is in the tent or whatnot.. and you need to go to the hospital or whatEver. Anything can happen... I hope you don't bring any just so you're on full alert Very Happy

haha okay then, I can't post my own snake photos from camp trips as a kid then? Cool Laughing We have one where dad has actually killed one with a bloody axe!!!! Head severed! (Because the snake kept coming back which is not usual if you've scared it off etc but there was a good sunning spot on a big cliff part near us and snakes like to come out and lay in the sun and it was the "dangerous" kind - as far as dangerous snakes in Sweden go).

Oh sorry I know you just said "don't mention snakes" and now I keep going on about snakes, but they DO exist. So if you are going out into the woods you should wear wellingtons. This is quite basic, as the snakes won't bite through the rubber. Or at least swing a stick around in front of you, but don't just plod on in high vegetation in flip flops however hot it is.

I'm not talking about the jungle but that's normal practise. How are you going to take care of him if you get bitten? What if you don't have mobile reception?

Oh sorry I know you just said "don't mention snakes" and now I keep going on about snakes, but they DO exist. So if you are going out into the woods you should wear wellingtons. This is quite basic, as the snakes won't bite through the rubber. Or at least swing a stick around in front of you, but don't just plod on in high vegetation in flip flops however hot it is.

Yes I can tell Laughing

Maybe take a quick look online for some basic tips... like don't only bring matches (if it rains and they're wet you're screwed). Don't forget mosquito repellent, food (!) in cooler boxes etc and store it away very neatly wrapped and packed as something not human will come and eat it very soon otherwise Razz
