| Hi I am 46 and very good at using computers, I am not stupid and can see the obvious, but I have no confidence in selling online. I have a folding camper I wish to sell and would like to try selling it over the net. It is worth over £2,500.00p and really worried that I am going to get scammed out of my money. I have seen your “scam”forum and what a great idea for you to let other people see first hand what you may have to deal with, you also seem to take it all with a pinch of salt with these African scam emails you all receive. Are all the scams that easy to recognise? In my particular case what would you look out for when selling an item such as this, is it fair, if not obvious that I wish to only to deal in cash, in full, on collection, or should I consider Paypal and Escrow and deposits. Thank you for any time and help you may give me. |

i REALLY wouldnt bother with Gumtree if I were you. Too many idiots and losers trying to scam you with their laughably pathetic ways. Go for ebay and only except bids from people with 100% feedback and no less. Saves you the hassle of playing email ping pong with a moron.
really, go Ebay! |

Read up on the advice given on Ebay for sellers and they clearly recommend Paypal for maximum protect - scammers often try to encourage payment outside of this method.
Scamming is very common and ploys include fake paypal sites, fake escrow and people paying in person with fake bankers draft. I wouldn't be surprised to hear of fake cash.
Another thread reported how a company with a name similar to Autotrader or Automart, for example, routinely contacts its sellers and relieves them of cash to 'renew' their advert but they are nothing to do with the sales magazine.
I even think, though someone will have to back me up, that someone who arranged a viewing of his vehicle through an auction site had it stolen then and there.
So you might think you've wised up to the most obvious Nigerian frauds but there are many more imaginative ways of making people part with their cash than badly spelt emails asking for goods to be posted abroad. |

| I bought and subsequently sold my camper through Gumtree with no worries. I did get a few scammers but they were so obvious I wasn't worried. Honest buyers are easy to pick out. Only accept cash and you should be okay. |
