|
|
Hi,
My laptop has developed a networking fault. I tried the yellow pages and yesterday walked around three places to find they had shut up shop. The fourth quoted me £30 per half hour + VAT (a sign, I suspect, that they were bracing me for other stealth charges) and the repair could go on for much longer than 30 minutes, so better have those £50 notes to hand...
So, I come here asking if anyone can recommend a laptop repair service in the locality of W5 that can give a precise quote with no hidden charges and that will not amount to something like more than 50% of the price I'd get for the laptop on ebay. Or, better still, if someone can advise me on how to fix it myself using the info I supply below, it would be much appreciated.
The problem:
On Tuesday, I opened a surprisingly convincing phising email. IE7 recognised it as a phishing website and my virus scanner alerted me to the worm Mabezat.B.97. A later complete scan of my system deleted another copy of it.
Anyway, my latop is a 2007 Acer Aspire running Vista Home Basic with SP1. After the phishing incident on Tuesday, my laptop cannot connect to the internet with Vista saying the connection is 'Local Only'. It does this both with wireless and when I connect the ethernet cable. I used the laptops of my flatmates to test the connection and it is fine. It worked again on Thursday night but on Friday morning, I was back to square one.
Since Tuesday, I have exhausted my technical knowledge in trying to fix it. I have:
*Repeatedly reset the wireless adapter on the laptop and the router.
*Reset Winsock, Winsock 2 and IPv4.
*Renamed the hosts file
*Deselected IPv6 in the TCP/IP properties and checked the other settings, nothing seems untoward.
*Disabled Windows Firewall and Zonealarm
I haven't however, messed with my registry or re-installed TCP/IP as I wouldn't know how to go about these things.
If anyone knows where to go get decent and honest service or can advise me as to what the problem is it would be much appreciated. Why does it work intermittently would be appreciated too... |

Hi, sounds like the bug may not have been removed.
I have seen this issue with XP machines, one trojan is removed, while one lurks in the background.
Have you tried to boot vista to safe mode (with networking) http://bertk.mvps.org/html/safemodevista.html ?
If you can get to the internet in safe mode it might be a virus/adware.
I am happy to have a look at the laptop, fixed price, no fix - no pay?
I am in SW6, to save on my inbox can you drop me a message via http://chillfire.co.uk/contact-us.aspx page on my site?
goodluck,
