THE INTRO PART
===========
This is Kazi. I am a student studying ACCA. I am a BBA with more than 3 years of experience in accounting, marketing & office management. In addition, I have a good record of part-time and contractual jobs supporting my CV.
Also, I posses strong PC literacy specializing in accounting software, Microsoft Office & internet applications. I am a friendly & dedicated person with excellent people skills. I can work under pressure and can learn new work flows quickly. I was active and participative during my academic life and contributed in various extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.
===============
NOW, THE MAIN PART
===============
I landed here on 19th of Feb, 2006. Got myself a job in one of the hardware & building materials chain. Though my job title is very lucrative (Accounts & Office Assistant), but the scope of my job is VERY limited.
I am looking for a accounting job (not as an accountant, but as a trainee or assistant or bookkeeper) from where I can start and apply my knowledge & experience.
I have got my NI number, bank account and all the other things sorted out (so, no prob regarding admin part). So, is there anyone who can help me with something like that (a chance to prove myself)?
Well thats it.....

There are loads out there just keep looking. But the best is too start with a comany just doing Creditors (aka Purchase Ledger), that way you are in the door. That is how I landed my assistant accountant job. So the old saying goes - you have to start at the bottom. |

Dear Smile,
Thanks for the reply. Yep...I'm heading with the same plan, but can't find from where to start. How did you get to know about your current job? Gumtree, Jobcentre, or any other thing / agency?
Do you have any reference or contact or can you arrange an interview for me? I can prove myself. I have got that confidence.
Awaiting your reply...

Hi Kazi
I notice you say you are studying for ACCA. In which country does this qualification apply to? I am a CA from New Zealand and found it very easy to get a job first time.
Which industry do you want to work in? ie. Banking, contract, temporary, commerce, public practice, public industry?
There are 12 agencies I know of in the UK that deal with accounting positions, depending on which area you wish to specialise in? |

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I am studying the international stream of ACCA. It applies to both UK and internationally (I think, except for Canada and US).
Can you tell me about the 12 agencies you have talked about? Does they deal with people who have student visa?
Awaiting your reply...

Hi Kazi
I'm not too sure about the student visa. How far are you into your studies? Can you work full time? There is certainly plenty of accounting work out there, especially if you are flexible and open to areas and types of work you would like to do.
The agencies I know of are:
ECHM
Nigel Lynn
Witan Jardine
Michael Page
PSD Group
Walker Hamill
Finance Professionals
Hudson Shribman
Robert Walters
Robert Half
Morgan McKinley
That's only 11 - sorry I can't think of the last one! If you want to go to their websites, just put the agency's name and then .co.uk/
Some of them can be quite pushy, but it is good experience having interviews with agencies as it prepares you for the real thing. I have noticed the terminology is a little different here, so ironing those problems out at the agency is great.
I haven't heard of ACCA before - what does it stand for? I assume something like Associate Contract Chartered Accountant?
Anyway good luck - let me know if this is of some help or not as I know it is this is a daunting place to work in the field of finance. |

ACCA is the Associate of Chartered Certified Accountants.
It's one of the biggest accountancy bodies in the UK & very well known.
I'm a fully qualified accountant (CIMA though, not ACCA!) and I'd agree with the advice previously posted about going to agencies. It's THE way to get an accounting job in London.
Register with two agencies initially (I've found Michael Page and Robert Half good) and then broaden your scope to maybe 4 agencies if you have no joy after a few weeks. Don't register with too many, it can be counter-productive. Be very careful that you don't let more than one agent put you forward for the same role, make it clear to them that you are only to be put forward once you have been contacted and have given your permission, and make sure they tell you the name of the company as well. (The agents will often try to get you to go after a job without telling you the company name.)
Agencies are, however, the best way of finding opportunities and the agents can also give you good advice about CV presentation and interview technique.
There are loads of accounting opportunities available, if you're progressing well through your exams and are reliable and keen then you should have no problem getting your next post.
Good luck!

| If youre three years experience werent in the UK it could be difficult to get an assistant accountants position right away. Practices can vary quite a bit country to country. Because of this youre 3 years experience is not as valuable as it would have been had it been in the UK. You might have to take an accounts payable/recievable role for 6 months to a year and work youre way up that way. Try a big company where there is high staff turnover. If they see you progressing through your exams and working well theyll give you a chance. |
