Dear Gumtree

As you seem unable or unwilling to stop the Hundreds of scam ads that appear in the find a pet section every day, I would sudgest that you get rid of the section for say 6 months if not forever then no one will get scamed out of thier money and it will stop the scammers posting .

What every your working on It has to happen fast. I have today reported 200 scam ads on pets section Dogs and there are more and more and hardly any genuine ads so many more I lost momentum. the only answer as I said before is to shut the section down till you dvelop a sure fire way to stop the scammers.

Hi its me again.

In 10 pages for today monday 7th september there are only 15 genuine ads the rest are scams

The scam adds are much worse now and sometimes it is taking 24 hours for reported adds to finally vanish .

SChenery , in 3 years of scam pet adds gumtree have done nothing , many times the have promised a new feature to arrive soon that will end the adds .... it is just words .

Just spoken to the team, they are going to take some more measurements of the fraud levels and then recommend a course of action from there.

Appart from the fact the every ad I reported to you yesterday is either still there or back on today 90 0/0 of todays ads are scam,s, who has time to do your job for you? some of the scams are so obvious that im sure you could prevent them being there at all.

Yeah you are right and this is as frustrating for me as it is for you. All I can do is keep pushing the technical team for the solution and hope we get it from them sooner than later

I spent some time with the CS manager this morning, trying to work through this.Two question: when you report the ads, do you report them as illegal / fraudulent? And when you do, do you leave anything in the comments, even just the word 'scam' would do.

If you answer yes to both those questions, then the ads are definitely being removed. Some of the spam ads may look the same the next day because they use similar images and words. You'll notice that the reference numbers on the ads are different meaning it is a new ad.

He did take me through the process they go through every morning when we get spam/scam attacked and I must say, it is impressive just how much we get rid of and how quickly. We worked on the London pet site and currently it is clean so it's only for less than an hour every day that the scams are on the site. He has assured me that the new measures will reduce this even further.

Scam / spam is a massive internal problem online and every online business is fighting hard against the influx but I'm sure good will triumph in the end!

How come gumtree rely on people reporting the adds to remove them??.....Gumtree implies when you post an add that it takes a short while for the post to go live.....Is this to give the impression they get checked first?????..If so..they obviosly dont.....I seen 2 guns advertised the other day...They were eventually removed..AFTER THEY WERE REPORTED ...I just took a peek at london pets...An theres loads of scammers in fridays posts....Its now 1pm on saturday ??????....Why should gumtree rely on people reporting them???...If they're not reported....They stay in......Thats shocking.....Your allowing these adds to scam people...And you know its going on...This REPORT ILLEGAL ADDS AND SOMETHING WILL BE DONE...Is rubbish.....I've reported a few as illegal...And wrote african scammer...Only to find the adds still in the next day...If gumtree actually checked the pets posts the problem would be solved overnight...Anyway??...Are gumtree not supposed to check adds by law??????........They know theres a problem....But they rely on people solving it for them by reporting them....I think they should change the name to SCAMTREE

I have reported all the scam adds on Norwich gumtree (link above) but all the adds are still live , can they be pulled please .

Jon , yes London pet scam adds are removed each morning , but then nothing is done until the next morning . Adds are staying live for 24 hours even when reported .

By not doing anything for 3 years the scam artists have clearly told others who have started doing the same , the site is now full of scams .

Essex , Kent and Norwich pet sections have all died with most sellers giving up posting adds due to all the scams . I guess they now use more secure sites to sell .

jUST IN....TOOK A PEEK AT THE PET POSTS I REPORTED THIS MORNING......SURPRISE,SURPRISE......STILL THERE...EVEN ANOTHER GUN/WEAPON POST..SO MUCH FOR "REPORT THEM" .......STILL NO ANSWER ABOUT THE ADDS HAVING TO BEING CHECKED BY LAW YET ASWELL ????

It is 12:41 am and I have just been to the dog ads and am dismayed thaty there are again over 200 scam ads on and most of theose i have reported again and again but they are allowed back on if they wer removed at all. What ever you are supposed to be doing its not working and I just cannot report them all, all the time.


I am so angry With Gumtree that I am close to taking legal action against you myself and also informing BBC Watch dog who have featured your site before for other scammers.


Close the site down while you sort yourselves out before it is shut down for you, for good by the law of this country

The adds are not removed , i just looked on a few gumtree citys and they are flooded with pet scam adds ......
