So results from the survey have come back. I have been tracking stats and usage etc on the forum so I have a much clearer view of whats going on here.
The good news is that there will be some technology upgrades to the forum and the introduction of some cool new features which I hope you will like. The security will also be increased to keep spammers and banned members out.
The possibly bad news is that I will be closing down the local chat forums, including of course the madhouse. They aren't used much at all (except for Madhouse) and they tend to be where most of the trouble happens. So I guess that leave F&P and community for the idle chatter.
I will start making the changes this afternoon.
We will be starting some new sections as well which will be more Gumtree related and we will be keeping these as clean as possible so if you're here to be naughty, stay out but if you want to contribute please do, we would appreciate it!
You can see the graph on the % of forum users that use which forums:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/166404/forums.png
This is not usage, eg Madhouse might be busier than others but more a spread of where individuals are posting |

Yeah its survey data so its never 100%. But it is good for giving an pretty accurate view of whats going on.
We did it last month over two weeks and we had over 1500 respondents. Exclusively Gumtree forum users. |

Ah so after the mass cull , that would explain why the chat forums were well down on the table |

No you're misunderstanding my explanation in the initial post. Usage may be higher in Madhouse than say Travel IE more posts per person but More people use the non-chat forums.
Of the 180k or so genuine forum logins on here, 97% (yes the entire company was staggered by this stat) have used Gumtree, 50% regularly, so it is the majority that I have to cater for, not just you 3% lot who just come on here to chat! |

| All seems fair, maybe it would be a good idea to merge the two ''chat'' forums into one, easier to moderate, easier to navigate and it could well increase the chat activity, that would then leave the other forums for specific category's and should prevent them from being clogged up with ''chat''. Possibly let the chat forum users decide or vote on a new name for the two merged forums.?Just an idea. |

| I think it would be good for this type of website if there was one specific forum for ''chat'', maybe not just focused on Friends & Partners as that may deter people from joining in if they maybe want to talk about other topics as well, re naming the F&P forum and closing the Community Forum will bring everyone who wants to 'chat'' together making it a more vibrant and active place and much more inviting for any potential new members..Going on my own experience with other forums a slow quiet forum (such as Community) will make people go elsewhere, no one wants to post and wait a few days for a reply.Seeing as the F&P forum seems to be the busier it would make sense if that was the one you used for ''chat''.A busy forum will attract new members especially if the forum covers a range of topics. |

Ok will do , monty has been there before though, If you were to change it so the poster couldn't just put London and had to put a borough that might help , and if they had it so that each ip could only place one advert a day for free then get charged for the others |

Yeah but I'm sure you can come from another angle to Monty!
The borough story will be addressed in a different way in the future |

Well, 97% of those who responded anyway, and I can tell you for a fact that when some people are getting 20+ forums emails from you, then you're pretty much recording the same information multiple times and skewing your stats.
And besides, if you mean "use" as in "post in the forums" then of course the people who respond are more likely to also use, as they are really the only ones to bother replying!
Statistical analysis and sample sizes sound a little off here. Ho hum. Most people moved out of Mad House to Community and F&P anyway, Mad House didn't seem to have a purpose in the end. Sad to see it go, but life moves on. |

Hi london i dont see a borough helping they just ignore that anyway, ive had them saying they are in kirkwall, diundee and one legit one posting on london was from belfast.
I find if the price is under £200 its a scam esp when it has a cutsie- wootsie picture, when you email them you generally know right away |

Agreed if the photo looks like it has been done for a dogshow , with ribbons and a nice fleece blanket to lie on you can tell.
Also by the very shite English that they use |

that data is seriously flawed and the presentation of it is woeful!
All graphs should have a title, the axis should be labled, and a legend should be included.
As for statistical analysis where is it ? Merely presenting percentages IS NOT a statistical analysis!
It would appear that you are showing only what you want to believe.
No data should be collected until you have thought through the statistical analysis that you are going to apply to the data - before you go and collect it.
That is barely even high school statistical knowledge, I shudder to think what is going to be done to the rest of this so called data that has been collected.
As usual people who know nothing of statistics, survey design, exprimental design use an out put to show what they want - no wonder science gets a bad name when there are charlatans allowed to prosper from their very basic errors.
Appologies for having a go at you, but this type of thing really annoys me, especially as I have taught statistics, experimental design and survey design for a number of years. |

| Urrrm dude, this is a watered-down public version of company data, of course its not going to look as thorough as it should. All our survey and statistical data was compiled and analysed by our team of data analysts. Trust me the work was thorough. |

I wouldn't even say it was even a watered down version to be honest.
I would assume that all the data and the analysis done along with the survey design would be available in company reports then.
It's just so basic that there is nothing you can take from it, so it's pretty pointless posting it in my opinion. |
