It would be useful if you include a RSS facility to specific word search. For example if you only want to recieve updates of a specific age range in the dating pages.

Craiglist is already doing that.

It would be extremely useful if we could filter the results by date of postings. I was trying to use the housing section to find accommodation; the map feature is very useful (I wanted to search for places only very close to a specific location), but hard to use because there are tens of very old ads appearing on it which just obfuscate the new recent postings (and since people don't delete their ad when the place becomes unavailable, it is quite annoying). By restricting to show only, say, the posts of the last week on the map, this would be solved.

IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE A FUTURE AD BUTTON IN THE MASSAGE SECTION.

You need to create 'property to rent' area index . North London and South London is not sufficient. You should be able to go into say North London and then choose area and then get into the current index.

You need to arrange these into groups.
These are the key area groups that people look at:
Don't worry about having too many words.
Both local people and new people look for different things and groups of areas and they may only know the area by name of the town or famous Road. There are people from all over the place looking for places to rent.
You can really improve the quality of information and make the front page very informative with larger maps showing a group of areas and perhaps a few around it. Assume that people don't know London

Example

North London:

Wembley, Kenton, Harrow,
Kensal Rise, Harlesden, Willesden,
Queens Park, Kilburn, Cricklewood, Willesden Green, West Hamsptead
Maida Vale, St Johns Wood, Swiss Cottage, Finchley Road ( you have to say Finchley Road because there are a large number of foreign students and people who don't know what Swiss Cottage is).
Edgware Road, Paddington, Queensway, Royal Oak
Notting Hill, Ladbrook Grove, North Kensington
Hammersmith, Shepperds Bush,White City.
Golders Green, Hendon, Finchley, Hampstead
Hampstead, Highgate, Gospel Oak,
Camden,Kentish Town, Islington
Canonbury, Dalston, Hackney, Clapton
Hoxton, Shorditch, London Fields
Manor House, Stoke Newington, Stamford Hill, Upper Clapton.
Ealing, Park Royal, Acton
Hounslow, Isleworth, Uxbridge
Watford, Rickmansworth, Northwood
Chiswick, Turnham Green, Brentford
Greenford, Perivale
Muswell Hill, East Finchley, Alexandra Palace
Tottenham, Seven Sisters, Blackhorse lane
White Heart Lane, Edmonton
White Chapel, Bethnal Green, Stepney, Mile End
Stratford, West Ham, Bromley By Bow,
Walthamstow, Leyton, Dagenham
West End & Soho
City, Old Street,
Wood Green, Turnpike Lane, Harringay, Palmers Green
Illford, Woodford, Chigwell
Kensington, Mayfair, Hyde Park.

This will be a dramatic improvement to the site

New posts should be at the top and older ones last.
It must be in reverse order.
Go and look a iii( internet investor).
You have to go through pages and pages to get to the one you want.
You need to do this quickly.

Another point about ads - you should not make it difficult for people to repost ads. This upsets people and makes their life difficult. Let people be free to repost their ads in the most convenient way instead of edit and delete. The ads get lost after one day.
Perhaps you can put a restriction on the number of posts in same category running at the same time.
For example business posting 20 accommodation adds should pay for the service - not to be at the top but to be allowed have more than 2 live property ads at any one time. Before you do that you could assume that most business will be happy to pay a small amount voluntarily.
You could simply have link for business customers and they would be happy to pay.

I am pleased that it's expensive to pay for posting because it would encourage the best ads to be at the top but also it doesn't encourage too many people being at the top of the list and penalising those that don't pay

I have been reporting these duplicated ads for over a week now, yet nothing is ever done.

Could you please explain why these ads are duplicated many many times and nothing is done to remove them.

What have a system for reporting ads if you can't be bothered to delete them.

PostPosted: Wed Nov 19, 2008 12:33 am    Post subject: Provide link at edit / renew to inform users NEW BUMP RULES Reply with quote

Sorry, I posted this as a new topic by mistake in General Feedback instead of replying to 'suggestions to improve Gumtree'.

Here it is again. Perhaps you need to delete the posting that it is not in the 'sticky' section.

INFORMATION LINK ON NEW RULES

I do not think that users are aware that you have changed the rules regarding re-posting (bump up).
Can you either include that information at the appropriate place when edit / re-posting an advert or provide a direct link to the re-posting rules so that the person is not expecting the advert to magically re-appear in the current listings.
I think that a little bit of communication will go long way in gaining back respect from the public and building back confidence in your site. I do not think people realise the enormous task that you have controlling the ever increasing spam and inappropriate advertising.

FREE WEEKLY BUMP UP SERVICE

I also think that it would increase respect by providing at the very least a FREE weekly bump up service. This could be controlled from your end in the form of a simple email with a click link. This will encourage people to advertise and then hopefully from your point view take up the sponsored upgrade.
I think that having no free bump up service at all is only likely to antagonise people rather than encourage them to stay with you.

I hope that you find these suggestions helpful.

Make the email system hide our email addresses, always.

This was spammers will not be able to get hold of our valued private email addresses.

Jester says........You speak, we listen - you ask, we act

well for a start no one at Gumtree is brave enough to let you speak to them. and I have asked, not once, but several times, why my ads and my use has now been restricted for asking, but YOU DO NOT ACT. I can't believe the amount of posts complaining of your lack of response. you leave people in the dark and very annoyed, not the best way to run a business.

Didn't this sound good on your first day back in 2006?
But now either boredom or apathy appears to have set in. This is evident by the amount of negativity seen in these forums and the lack of sightings of any moderators.
I have been trawling through the feedback here and there are some seriously good ideas and with a little effort this site could be a major competitor to the infamous EB*y.

The main complaint appears to be the mystical disappearance or none appearance of adverts..mine being one of them.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE sort the problems out, you have a good base, and lets have a decent sales site we can depend on!!

I wasn't aware and spent the last few evenings wondering how I couldn't move my ad up again!

I last posted my ad on the 3rd of November....its not like I repost it every day.
I am a small business just starting up, I thought gumtree was a great idea....it would have been nice if there was some pre warning about no longer being able to 'bump up' ads.
Who knows maybe then I wouldn't be so angry, and maybe I would have paid to have my ad up......now I've wasted time trying to figure out what happend to my ad and have now read loads of bad info about peoples ads going missing.....will need to really consider if its worth paying for that risk.

Not happy.

How about if somebody's ad is posted in the wrong section; instead of deleting the whole thing, you allow them time to ammend it, or post them the page. Otherwise they'll have to retype the entire ad and upload pictures again. A bit of a watse of time, no!?

ebay owns, or has a controlling stake in gumtree, which they only bought to stop it competing with ebay.

Get rid of bots like OOSHOPOO.COM and UUSHOPUU.COM

(perhaps there should be a CAPTCHA on the ad submit form?

This used to be a simple easy site for the community now you have ruined it by making it all about money, the appeal to this site was it was free to post ads on it now your stopping people from renewing there ads> It is very rare to sell an item within one day especially when you take all day to get them onto your site then you refuse to renew them them the following day unless they pay you, sort it out you are spoiling the site!!!

I will be looking elsewhere to sell my or indeed give away my old goods as you have made it difficult to work surley you cant expext everyone to make up a new ad everyday until they sell there car/tv etc, stop money grabbing and get back to what made this site great!!!!!!!
