That Nigerian almost got me, good thing I made my research
that's probably why I don't feel at ease when he is already asking for my bank account and he offer a huge money for used product. |

so how exactly do these scams work?
I had one that tried to get me by asking to place money in a friends western union account or something... how does the scam work if I'm not putting money in their account? |

| cos they ask you for a scan of the w-u document and as long as they have the 10 digit mctn no. they can take the money anywhere in the world. its like giving them your cash card and pin no. |

Hi, I'm not certain its a scam, but I've so far had 3 replies from 3 different car ads (and 3 different names), claiming that they're in Italy with the car, and that they've hired an Escrow service to take payment and ship the car to the UK.
Anyone know the deal with these ads or purchased a car from them successfully? |

you're right it is!
they claim to use an escrow service www.int-cargo.com but when I looked into it, although the site looks legit, the contact address they give in London is incorrect. The post code does not exist!
BEWARE! |

|
|
Hi,
Long time listener, first time caller...
I've bought stuff off gumtree before so pretty happy when it's a local buy.
However, there was an item listed locally but the seller wants to set up an ebay auction.
They have asked for my ebay username and address where I want the item posted and whether paypal was ok. I don't use either as I prefer cash but seeing if I can set it up.
When I hear 'posted', alarm bells do ring. However, when you also mention 'ebay'and 'paypal' then there is some insurance for both parties, surely? No mention of moneygram etc...
The person is UK based but not in my city area anymore now hence the ebay auction offer.
I was wondering whether anyone has had the some potential scam email or has had a similar experience and it worked out fine.
I'm going to email back anyway and say I will travel to collect as it seems a good deal.
Thanks |

Sounds like a potential scam to me... i have never heard of one like it but i would recommend face to face trading which is gumtree policy.
Happy travelling to pick it up |

Thanks for the replies. Good to know the forum is active especially with sales scams that can happen.
I've emailed but no response so must have been a scam.
I've also noticed that the advert was removed.
Ah well, if it's too good to be true it usually is.
I'll just repeat what everyone says with Gumtree sales:
A/ Stick to cash.
B/ Meet face to face. |

The guy is a con man who should hurt!. he wants a bank transfer updfront then nothing arrives. The weird thing is that he emails a lot saying he is ill or pretending to be someone else and that danny is in hospital. He even gives out dull royal mail tracking numbers.
The guy is a dum ass and his spelling is terrible!
AVOID HIM AND ANY DS CONSOLES THAT ARE NEW WITH BRAIN TRAINING AND UNDER £60
He give his home address as :-
Mr danny willoughby

Uses the following email addresses

Guys...contact me as I have more info.... |
I had some trouble with this guy in the past but I got my money back eventually (although I have to admit I was about 30mins away from setting off to Blackpool to smash his teeth in). If anyone needs some info. on getting their money back then e-mail me rowek667@tiscali.co.uk |

I have been scammed in the following way:
I bought an iphone cash, even tested the iphone with my sim and checked that warranty was valid in the UK from Apple.
After I handed over the cash, we parted ways and shortly thereafter I had a "no service" message on the iphone.
I queries with o2 and they confirmed the iPhone was barred because the owner had called and reported the iphone lost/stolen, so o2 had barred the IMEI number. Now I cannot make calls (otherwise works perfectly) and original owner gets sent a replacement!
I trust this help you not get caught with what seems like a legit deal, only to find o2 have blocked the phone.
MAKE SURE YOU GET THE PHONE TRANSFERRED INTO YOUR NAME!
Cheers |
this happened to me too but i am in ireland.. from what i gather you can use them in different countries if u can find someone to swop with you.. i havnt been lucky enough to find someone yet hopefully i will or its 350 euros down the drain |

|
|
I have unfortunatly had the misfortune to have dealing with a scammer on gumtree while looking in a rush for Britney tickets.
i have 2 britney spears ticket for sale, ticket are seating ticket,
the face value is 50pounds but due to the fact that i have 2 extra ticket
I am selling for 25pound each and am available to meet you at the arena cos am also coming to the concertyou can call me on
He offered to email me the tickets and meet me at the o2 for cash exchange as he was attending the concert also.
I suggested that maybe he came to our seats to collect the money as it would be better for us as we were arriving alot earlier than he was or to call us when he arrived.
He emailed me the e-tickets and all looked fine.
When we tried to enter with the tickets we were obviously refused entry and the tickets were bought with card that was later refused.
Luckily we managed to get more tickets and enjoy the concert.
On my return I looked a bit more at his advert and found mutiple listings for similar or same tickets.
Theres 2 mobile numbers that they use and several names:
+447552464327
+447789092343
-Daniel, Denise, Andrew, William, Sam and Paul
most seem to be London based ads but the recent one I found today was for Cardiff.
The email address they used to send me tickets was:
denise ogunowo <denise4real2000@yahoo.co.uk>
I have found in-date listings with the same numbers and reported them to Gumtree and have tried to find any other places but none as yet.
Is there anything else I can do to make this persons fun a little harder? |

I saw your adverts and i am interested in your Large hardshell wheelie suitcase (£30) advert and i will want you to get back to me with full present condition and the picture if is available.
Best Regards.
Mr Graham Smith.
hi
i can take a picture and attach tomorrow morning...the condition is as new, as it has only been used once.
Hello,
Thanks for your quick response and i am very sorry for the late response.I want you to inform you that i have my company reputable shipping agent that will take care of the pickup for the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase from your location and also to pickup some other consignment for me in Glasgow.I will want you consider that the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase has been sold to me for now and i will want you to remove the ads from the site so that i can be able to rest assure about this transaction. Hope to read from you soon.
Best Regards.
Mr Graham Smith.
I am sorry I am not prepared to take the ad from the site regarding the suitcase. It is a first come first served basis for the ad and is quicker and easier to sell to a local person rather than a businessman if i can do that, i would prefer it. it is a level playing field and if someone else comes along who can buy it today or tomorrow then i am happy to sell it to them.
As regard the pick up,I'll employ a shipping agent to do so for me as soon as the transaction is sealed and i will compensate you with £15 to remove the advert from the site,if you consider the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase sold for me. This is how the payment will be made to you i will instructed my business associate in united kingdom to issue you the cheque in amount of £1,600 including the shipping fund arrangement for the pickup of the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase and also to pickup some other consignment for me in another location and you will deduct the cost of the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase and any tax incurred and the compensation fees and the remaining balance will be send to the shipping agent in cash via western union money transfer to
make arrangement for immediate shipping for the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase and also to pickup some other consignment for me in another location in Glasgow.
If this is okay with you I want you to get back to me ASAP with your full name, address and landline phone number both mobile number,so that the payment can be issue out to you. Thanks for your understanding in anticipation.
N:B:-I WAITING FOR THE CHEQUE TO CLEAR BEFORE THE PICK-UP.
i am quite aware of the criminal activity and scams which you demonstrate below. you issue me with a stupid amount of money for a second hand article of no real value except to a local person travelling. i issue you with the "change" and you take the money whilst your cheque bounces in the UK bank.
you must think i am stupid to fall for such a thing as offering 1500 for a 30 pound secondhand suitcase. I will be reporting your email address to the authorities here |

There is a scammer that is going by the name of elmer in the pets section, so far seen in sphynx kittens and monkeys. I did actually contact him/her re the monkeys and they wrote back giving me descriptions and asking me various questions.
I wrote back saying I was still interested, answered their questions with caution, as at this point I was getting suspicious. They then emailed back to say they are in Greater London and would need at least £150 to transport the monkey to me. I wrote back saying that we are often in the London area and would be able to collect with suitable transport..........needless to say I have not yet received a reply. |
