I got one guy trying to buy my phone off me. Thing is posting only costs £13 and he's too quick to offer more money for the item if someone else offers the same amount (probably more scammers):

"I am buying the item for my company agent.
I am shipping the item oversea,so i will add 40 pounds to the shipping cost.
I will make the payment through paypal and i want you to get it posted
through Royal Mail today. so i will make the payment now.
This is the shippping address:

Name: Muhammed O. Saheed
Address:No 15,Fadimula street,Oni&Sons,Ring Road
City:Ibadan
State:Oyo state
Zipcode:23402
Country:Nigeria

The payment will be made now"

Then a spoof email comes through from "PayPal" saying:

"This PayPal payment has been deducted from the buyer's account and has been "APPROVED"but will not be credited to your account until the shipment reference/tracking number is sent to us for shipment verification so as to secure both the buyer and the seller. Below are the necessary information requested before your account will be credited.Send tracking number to our customer care service or email us through this mail : csc.feedbacknotifiers@accountant.com and our customer service care will attend to you. As soon as you send us the shipment's tracking number to us for security purposes and the safety of the buyer and the seller, the money will be credited to your account."

Mike Wilson - offers people things they are looking for (like tickets on Gumtree) takes their money and then is never heard from again!

He had £450.00 from me last week for Community Shield tickets (Liverpool vs Chelsea this Sunday in Cardiff) and I have not heard from him since Monday (when he got the money!)

It wouldn't be so bad, but 4 of the tickets were for kids aged 4-7... Mad

The tickets were promised by Courier, but of course - no tickets!

His details are:

Name: MIKE WILSON
E-Mail: just.t.ticket@googlemail.com
Location: LEEDS
Bank Account Details: Nationwide
(Sort) 07-44-56
(Acc ) 34503829

His e-mails are:
just.t.ticket@googlemail.com and latetix@googlemail.com (he has scammed a few people on Gumtree now!)

I wired the money to this account on Friday of last week, and as I say, I now know that he had conned me!

The police are investigating.. DO-NOT deal with this arsehole!!

Anyone know what my chances of recovering my cash are?

Arite this guy advertised a £5000 tv for sale for £400, obviously a scam but I wanted to see what would happen. He said he goes through gumtree.com's squaretrade (although I can't see anything about it!) At first he requested my address, i gave my student accomodation address(I know a bit stoopid now I look back) and he says he's going to send an invoice soon.

Oh yea he says he lives in italy!

Have any of you heard of this before? And am I doing anything risky by giving him my address?

Yeah I had someone do the same thing to me (from Italy too). He was selling Roland V-drums for about a tenth of the price. That set alarm bells ringing immediately but I couldn't resist finding out more (I really wanted those drums!). Anyway I got in touch and he said he uses Ebay secure payment and DHL delivery and that both companies would contact me for payment etc. I recieved e-mails from the supposed companies but the 'ebay' one was asking for payment via Moneygram whereas e-bay always use paypal and strongly advises users not to use Moneygram (also the DHL e-mail had contained a paragraph crammed with grammatical errors). I e-mailed ebay and they confirmed that this was a scam so don't give this guy anything!! I gave my address too thinking that there'd be no harm but in hindsight I wish I hadn't. Embarassed Hopefully nothing will come of it and he'll realise no-one will fall for his stupid scam. Then he'll have to get a job like the rest of us instead of making a living conning honest people out of their hard earned cash.

Hello,
I saw your adverts and i am interested in your Large hardshell wheelie suitcase (£30) advert and i will want you to get back to me with full present condition and the picture if is available.

Best Regards.
Mr Graham Smith.

hi
i can take a picture and attach tomorrow morning...the condition is as new, as it has only been used once.

Hello,
Thanks for your quick response and i am very sorry for the late response.I want you to inform you that i have my company reputable shipping agent that will take care of the pickup for the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase from your location and also to pickup some other consignment for me in Glasgow.I will want you consider that the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase has been sold to me for now and i will want you to remove the ads from the site so that i can be able to rest assure about this transaction. Hope to read from you soon.

Best Regards.
Mr Graham Smith.

I am sorry I am not prepared to take the ad from the site regarding the suitcase. It is a first come first served basis for the ad and is quicker and easier to sell to a local person rather than a businessman if i can do that, i would prefer it. it is a level playing field and if someone else comes along who can buy it today or tomorrow then i am happy to sell it to them.

As regard the pick up,I'll employ a shipping agent to do so for me as soon as the transaction is sealed and i will compensate you with £15 to remove the advert from the site,if you consider the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase sold for me. This is how the payment will be made to you i will instructed my business associate in united kingdom to issue you the cheque in amount of £1,600 including the shipping fund arrangement for the pickup of the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase and also to pickup some other consignment for me in another location and you will deduct the cost of the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase and any tax incurred and the compensation fees and the remaining balance will be send to the shipping agent in cash via western union money transfer to
make arrangement for immediate shipping for the Large hardshell wheelie suitcase and also to pickup some other consignment for me in another location in Glasgow.
If this is okay with you I want you to get back to me ASAP with your full name, address and landline phone number both mobile number,so that the payment can be issue out to you. Thanks for your understanding in anticipation.

N:B:-I WAITING FOR THE CHEQUE TO CLEAR BEFORE THE PICK-UP.

i am quite aware of the criminal activity and scams which you demonstrate below. you issue me with a stupid amount of money for a second hand article of no real value except to a local person travelling. i issue you with the "change" and you take the money whilst your cheque bounces in the UK bank.

you must think i am stupid to fall for such a thing as offering 1500 for a 30 pound secondhand suitcase. I will be reporting your email address to the authorities here

I find this really interesting. Do scammers really think that people are so stupid?? Shocked To employ a shipping agent and compensate you £15 on top of your price and then send a cheque of £1500, come on!! Hey, what is that suitcase made out of gold??? Laughing

I don't trust a website with this little information about who registerd the domain. There is no real name in the records, neither any contact details, you will never find them if they should disappear.

It used to be so easy to figure out someone is a scammer when they try to do shady business using a gmail, yahoo, excite, hotmail or other free webbased email, now they have invaded mail.com and use email addresses like theirname@accountant.com or theirname@usa.com BE AWARE!! If an email seems suspicious, simply go to mail.com and check to see if there is an email address which the scammer could have gotten from there, because it's not as obvious as yahoo or hotmail. Elaborate fake email from service@paypal.co.uk. First clue...email address....when you open the email only....service@paypal.co.uk <cc.paypal@accountant.com>

Then below:

I checked my paypal account and of course there was nothing there. Somewhere in the email below it says to receive notification of this payment, log into your paypal account and click on My Account and then something else....and add this email address!!!??? Never heard of having to do this before.

Once again they offered more than I advertised it for and the first email was Nice Watch...I want to send to my kid! I asked how they knew it was a nice watch when gumtree had failed to post the photographs....etc etc etc.

Damn timewasters....

I got this today. I also tried calling the number...very birefly. The line sounded a bit...well dodgy, and then a recorded voice started to say, very slowly "the number you are calling is not available". It just didn't sound professional.
This is the first time I have sold something on gumtree so i am a bit sceptical, and naive about how this all works.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for youe mail, i am ok with the price, so i will like to inform you that the payment will be made via check, a check of 3,000pounds will be send to you, so when u receive it, you will have it cash, deduct your money and you will have to send the remaining money to my wife and 3kids in West Africa but you will have to ship the bike to my client's house in United State, so mail me back with your full info, your name, contact address, and your phone number, if you are willing to do business with me. Hope to hear from you soon.

My witty come-back:

Hello Aullerio Juan Franscesco,

I accept your £30,000 cheque, and will deliver the money personally to your wife and three children in Nigeria, once the money has cleared in full in my bank account. I will then ride my motorcycle in person to your client's house in the United States. I think I will need to make a boat so that I can float it across the Atlantic Ocean, but I think that the currents should lead me to the USA.

I look forward to receiving your cheque soon. Please send it to my work address at:

Kind regards,

P.S. Is there anything you'd like me to bring over for your children whilst I'm travelling to Nigeria?

I'm sad to say, that he didn't bother replying back to me Sad I hope I didn't offend him!

Hi Philip,

Don’t mean to be rude, but do you have another email address that you would be able to send this from. i.e. the company you work for.

Are you planning on picking this car up in person?

Would the bankers draft come from a UK bank?

Sorry to ask these questions but one has to be careful these days.

Many thanks

Well I can't remember where it all started with me except that he(?) asked about my OKI dotmatrix printer and a few freebies. His english wasn't very good and often his emails didn't make sense. Asking questions that were not relevent to the product. He eventually said that someone here(sydney?) would contact me and that he was out of town. I guess that is why he didn't call me at home...ha ha. Then he took a whole month to ask if the other person had called/emailed...I said no! I felt like telling him to get stuffed as I had had other people wanting to take this item off my hands but I reserved it for this idiot. Next thing I know before an amount is agreed upon I get 4 x money orders in the mail. I had said no cheques. I knew straight away that the 4 $1000 each money orders were fake. The Australia Post logo was blurred on one, there was no water mark on any of them, the paper was of poor quality, there were no perforations on the paper etc. I took them to the Post Office and they got a good laugh too. The next day I got an email from the loser and up until them I didn't know where these fack money orders came from. He just asked if I had recieved payment and then I said "oh so the fake money orders were from you...ha ha". He replied saying "what do you mean?" . I laughed again and he just said that the extra money was for shipping. I thought it was hilarious that someone would send $4000 for a $100 item. He continued to bullshit a couple more times even after I said that the "fraud squad" had the money orders.

Only been on Gumtree for less than a week & the only reply to my ad for a flat to rent is from some losser, loony, pain in the but cheeks, scammer who appears to have a total sex change half way through their email.
They start out calling themselves 'Anita' & a few paragraphs later they've become 'william'. Confused
It has all the classic signs of asking for too many personal details, they seem to think Edinburgh is in London and the spelling is seriously pants. Avoid like the plague.

Its been mentioned before. Emails asking sellers to call numbers starting 07 only these dont look like your normal mobile numbers.
I'd like to warn other sellers that these number can charge 12 plus just for placing a call to them. It was on watchdog some time ago, and I have had them before when I placed an ad with Autotrader.
If anyone is genuinely interested in your items they will call you, text you, email you, they wont be mailing and asking you to call them.
I only want to sell a phone coz I need some cash right now, but these people are really starting to iritate me Evil or Very Mad

Lara

Please correct me if Im wrong. You want to pay 90 for this phone and 20 for Royal Mail. The phone is worth 65 plus you have to pay import duty in US. You also want to send a complete stranger cash in another country for goods which you havent seen. I think this would strike anyone as being more than a little odd!

This is what I got a few days ago whilst advertising a camera for sale. I believe I was far too polite. Strange, I haven't heard back from him... Wink

I don't post internationally and, having heard of scams going on in Nigeria, suspect this is one of them. The item is for pick up only and for cash. If you are unable to do this, then pls continue your search.

Thank you
