I'm moving from NZ to Scarborough, Yorkshire and need to set up a bank account.
I have no idea what banks are good. So far, I'm looking at:
HSBC (easiest to start set-up with, but not popular in NZ so not sure of its reputation in UK)
NatWest (don't know much about this one)
Yorkshire Bank (looks like it's not very big outside of Yorkshire)
FirstDirect (needs 1,500 sterling/month deposit to avoid fees, don't know if there are ATMs/branches)
Lloyds TSB (don't know much about this one)

I'm most concerned with having good systems & customer service both online and by phone, and reasonable bank draft fees, and having ATMs widely available.

Any suggestions?

I have been with the yorkshire bank for over 20 years.
I have had not one problem with these.

Maybe thats a good reason to start banking with the yorkshire bank.

I can't praise First Direct enough. The £1500 per month is to put off people who only have a dormant account, if you have any of the following: savings, mortgage, credit card, as well as your current account there are (i think) no charges and the £1500 per month limit does not apply.

They are part of HSBC so you use their cashpoints and branches if you need to, and their telephone and internet banking are great too.

Really, i have found them to be excellent and can't recommend them enough. In fact I think they are the UK's most recommended bank and their customer satisfaction in surveys is generally top of the pile.
