Hi there
I would like to get some answers about British culture.
Have been here for almost 4 years but didn't make any British friends.
I just had a talk with my brother about British culture and lanaguage.
He said that every culture have it's own melody language and that if a foreigner won't learn this melody that in most of the cases even though he will speak a fluent english he won't be fully understood by British.
I'm just in progress of opening a bisness and I'm very aware of that I won't succeed.
So I would really appreciate you guys can give me a few tips abouth this matter.
Thanks |

Perhaps you are unlucky because I have a lot of friends of different nationalities and I was born in London. There are sometimes problems because we misunderstand what someone says or does but if yoiu don't take offence it soon works out. |

It's easy to say cos you probably British. Are you?
Being yourself works in ones native country but in this or any other to understand others one have to first get to know the culture.
How do people think, express their emotions etc.
My brother studied English and have been to many different countries and told me that what's most important in learning a foreign language is to
learn some "melody language". Do you know what I'm talking about?
Every country has its own melody which depends in culture background.
British are famous in this that they speak with calmness.
Italian for example speaks very loudly and likes to uses his body whilst speaking. I suppose when some Italian will start speaking in English buy with his own "melody" then most of British will feel offended.
They will think that he's rude.
I'm not an expert with languages but I have a feeling that this is the case.
Like I said I'm almost 4 years in this country and tried ones to start a business but failed. I suppose one of the reasons was my luck of language and culture knowledge.
I bet that there are some certain unwritten rules in each country when it comes to communication.
I would be grateful if you guys can write some of them. |

Perhaps... and another think is that I'm shy when it comes to meet a new people. |

I think it is a case of that you have to learn to fit in with the people around you, its ok to still maintain your beliefs etc., but you have to learn to fit in with the people around you.
This melody language you speak of. Even in England, from city to city, we are different, geordies are different to londoners etc. etc., Just be friendly to people, dont act like an outsider, go with the flow, accept the country/city you are in and basically smile and be friendly and I cant see that you can go far wrong. |

I'm Polish but right know I fell I'm without a nationality cos I don't have any contact with polish except my brother. I have a few friends in the college but I live far away so I see them only in the class room.
Sometimes I think that I'm British but in the other hand how can I be British if I can't communicate with them.
Sometimes I think of going back to my country. I was there in December for Christmas by the way but I can't find myself there any more either.
I feel like like I'm beetwen. I guess is up to me which direction I want to go. |

See above which I wrote just now.
I think that you have to get more confidence in yourself and be more assertive !
Be friendly to people and they should be friendly back.
Praps you should join some sort of evening class or some social club or something to make some friends eh?
Its a case of finding a way to make friends and clubs and classes should make it easier for you.
Dont get me wrong there will always be people out there who are racist and wont accept people from other countries for whatever their reasons but equally there are people out there who will accept you and be prepared to be your friend. |

You right. Confidence is all I need cos lately I'm luck of it
The idea with social club it might work. I think about it and search for some. And with people I guess you right. There will always be someone who whatever you do he will simply not accept you cos you foreigner.
I've heard many times British saying that how the foreigner dare to speak to me etc but also talk to some British who are admire foreigners for courage to live in a foreign country and willing to learn new culture. |

See you know some of the answers. If some people don't like you move on to people who will. I think Polish people are going to have a big positive effect over here. Already the local shops are stocking polish products. Be confident - I like you |

Exactly, I for one, being british, admire all the people that travel around the world, it takes alot of courage to up sticks and go somewhere else, so be proud of yourself !!!
Its just, not meaning to get political, there is alot of bad feeling towards foreigners in this country at the moment because of illegal immigration so that doesnt help you I know.
But like I said there are people who will accept you and be your friend and the ones that dont, just move on, forget them and seek out others who are willing to be your friend. |

I think so but competition is enormus. Except that you need to be excelent with your music you also need to know how to promote yourself.
Know how to talk to people and wich people but I guess when someone really wants something then will eventually gets it.
My style is basicly House music. Love the soulful, latino.
Check this out. http://stylenetwork.org/
And what do you do for living? |
