anyone but tiscali. had SOOO many problems with them, spent a total of 3 months NOT connected to the internet but still paying for it.. told loads of times they would refund the money and never did... just got shuffled from clueless department to clueless department... then they said they couldnt upgrade our line to 1mb for some technical reason. we finally disconnected from them (took TWO MONTHS and about a dozen phone calls for them to disconnect us and stop charging us!), now with homechoice, 1mb line no problems, never had a problem with homechoice so far.

Depending on how much are you looking to spend I would probably go for an entry level speed of about 2mb. This has become the standard for BT, ranging in price from £17.99 up to £29.99 depending on what you think your usage will be.

As you say though there are loads of different options out there and BT certainly may not be the best one.

A great site to compare and read reviews about different providers and what they offer is Adslguide.org.uk. It may seem a bit unclear at first but a bit of digging around on that site should help you decide which one to go for.

I used to work in their call centre and thought they were rubbish! You have to pester to speak to a supervisor cos there was one for about every 100 sales people. They did sort out problems eventually. Either that or put it in writing. The call centre was outsourced so I think that was the problem really, don't know why tiscali use them!

Hello,I might have a solution for you,

I'm looking for someone in UK to take over an Internet broadband contract (AOL Silver) and a BT landline (BT Together option 1) contract.
These contracts were set last August (from August 1st 2005) for at least 1 year.
I need to move back to France to start my new job and look for someone who will be interested to take over these contracts until at least the end of July.

Advantages:
Free modem,
You will have to commit for only 4-5 months and not 12 months and after this period you can keep the contracts or cancel whenever you want,
I offer 1 month free Internet,
I will help you to set everything,
package upgradable to another option.

Please, let me know if it can be a solution for you!

Davy

Some advice!!
Don't get AOL, why? with AOL you have to use their software (internet exporer software) and that slows your PC down. The software is also confusing since most people are used to using the "normal" Blue 'e' icon Internet explorer.
Your best bet is probably BT or Bulldog, from what I've been told.
Sorry Davy....

yep, they've taken three weeks to re-connect me after I moved house, and you get the call centre guys in India reading you their script everytime you phone, the worst part is you cant even get angry with em since they dont actually seem to have a clue whats going on, I've been moved to 'high priority' so many times I must be up there with the pigeons....

dont bother with em unless you like listening to elevator music...

You do know that Homechoice just resell Tiscali right? Laughing

However your story mirrors my own... I ended up having to get a second phone line installed because i needed broadband for work and tiscali took so long moving the original connection when we moved house. Then we tried to cancel and found it impossible to the point my flatmate just canceled his direct debit and ended up with debt collectors chasing him. We have been with Zen for almost a year - they are a bit more expensive but the connection is rock solid and support is great (though ive never needed it)

long story short - avoid tiscali at all costs

I'd recommend PlusNet.

I switched to them and double my speed and pay less.

They have good customer service too - they have a recommend a friend scheme too if you're thinking of using them

Avoid Bulldog!!! I signed in in July last year for Superactive (one pound connection charge, one month free, five months for 17.99, and then full price 52.50 per month).

1. They charged me Ł120 for connection! After few phone calls they gave me my Ł119 back.
2. The speed is not 8M but 6-6.5M - never more than that.
3. Two months ago I've discovered that they charging me full price Ł52.5 from the beginning!!! When I called them they told me that I'm not on the special offer plan! That I've apply for their service at 8 July and that offer began at 19th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I told them that it's impossible as I found their ad in the newspaper before I've applyed (lsn't it logical?) they asked me to send them this newspaper ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................
I've gotten speachless............
I couldn't believe what I heard...........
When after few seconds of silent I've asked him if he's beeing serious he appologise me and put me again on hooooooolllllllldddd....... then he said that they going to give me a refund for this period and will change my contact for new, cheaper one, free of charge.
Yes, I've got new contract but still didn't get my Ł240 back......

So after about 4 (FOUR) hours online explaining few times to different people what happened I didn't get a refund.
Now I'm preparing myself to call them again...

I've got AOL and have been using it for over 2 yrs now and have never had a problem inspite of shifting. My connection was up and running faster than I could unpack the kettle to sit down with some coffee.
Yes, you do have a different setting to surf the net, but you get used to it and proves really efficient. Get AOL unlimited, that's what I have and you're good to go.

Details here www.go-fast.co.uk

I'd agree that Bulldog are useless. It took two months to get connected, they have overcharged me for ages, never giving me the free month that I signed up for etc etc. On the plus side, I stopped paying in December because of all the hassles and they are still providing the service.... (April 2006) So I've had four months free which has pretty much made up for the poor service in my opinion! I can't see them getting around to following me up as they are so useless!

I'm working in IT and
Bulldog is the worst company in the UK we've dealt with.
Seriously if you don't believe me try calling their customer support and see how long it takes to get through.

NTL is not bad for home use.

Cheers

If you want broadband with out a contract Virgin.net is the way to go. Have not found any other company that you dont have to subscribe for twelve months to use their product.

I think you should get Bulldog Broadband. They have fab prices that aren't just a introduction price but the price you'll pay as long as you are with them!

Bulldog have serious problems with their billing. Have a look at their forums on adslguide.org and see all the unhappy posts and make up your own mind. Personally I would never sign a 12 month contract, the broadband market is changing too fast - the only exception might be Telewest cable if you can get it as i've heard good things about blueyonder.

Current ISPs worth looking at (most have only 1 month contracts): Zen, Nildram, UKFSN, EvolutionDSL, Ace Internet, BE Unlimited.
