IMO the best for speed and service realibilty is NTL (now Virgin Media)
The problem with ISPs that use phone lines is that you never get anywhere near the speed you pay for, the further your away from the exchange the worse it is and at the end of the day its just old copper thin cables thats suppling this.
Also ISPs that use ohone lines can be effected by being switech to the LLU which when it gies wrong can get you kicked from that ASAP forever.
With Virgin Media the cable modem version your being supplied by Optic fiber cables so its a lazer speed service and no matter how far your away from the exchange your speed stays at its best.
There customer service is crappy but you'll not be phoning them alot. |

| I have used Telewest cable (now Virgin media ) for quite a few years. Their speeds compare well with the ADSL providers in the London area. They are also offering good discounts to keep customers ( if you ask for one) so you should be able to get a good deal from them. |

| Regarding mobile broadband, does anyone have any reccommendations? Also, does anyone have any idea whether the likes of Vodafone, 3 and T-Mobile offer mobile broadband across the whole of London? Top 10 Broadband now has a great mobile broadband section: http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk/types/mobile-broadband/ but no coverage checking as yet. |

Hi, try a comparison site, or reading a broadband magazine... here are a few ideas...
1) http://www.UKcheapbroadband.com/broadband-blog/ - Broadband magazine
2) http://www.ukcomparebroadband.co.uk
3) http://www.testmybroadbandspeed.com (dispite the sites name, it's actually pretty good!)
The broadband magazine site has some info. Other than that, maybe google each providers name, along with words like "complaint" or "nightmare" or "customer service"... |

What on earth would that prove?
If you look for bad impressions how will it help you work out if its what you want? You'd only see one very fixed side of the argument.
I'm with Virgin Media and from what I can gather from others the front-end customer service is absolutely rubbish (and I get that from a certain sort of British person who doesn't like where the call centre is located, so they're on a loser right from the start).
In my own experience - not having the same British prejudices - on the few occasions I have called Virgin Media my question has been quickly answered. One time this resulted in a new modem being delivered within 3 days, other times it has just been to enquire about short term network issues when the information has not been published yet (maybe a handful of times in several years).
Most whingeing and whining about Virgin stems from people using badly maintained computers, not understanding this fact, and not being happy that Virgin won't send someone round to fix it for them.
So to an intellugent person who is unlikely to have to be on the phone every five minutes trying to find out why Write keeps shutting down or why they keep getting message about the system being infected with spyware, it comes down to cost and download speed (for me it is just download speed). |

What would it prove? Well, it would prove if there were lots of people complaining about the company, and if they had positive or negative experiences of a companies customer support.
Also, there are sometimes legitimate reasons why people may need to call support lines, from hardware failures, to general issues with their connection.
I made no ref. as to location of call centres, and I don't really think it matters too much so long as the calls are answered swiftly, and the call centre worker is good at communicating, and clear.
What may be of interest however, is if a company has a swift responding sales line, but the support line takes an age to get a response on, as this may be some indication of the level of customer care provided by the company. |

There are ALWAYS people complaining about EVERY company.
The reference to call centre location was nothing to do with your comments, but a justification of the comments made by a huge number of those who complain about the service.
In the red corner, Virgin supplies a blisteringly fast connection which isn't affected by wind, rain, phase of the moon, and distance from the exchange (I can download a whole album in seconds). It has an uptime approaching 100%. Equipment is reliable.
In the blue corner, if you need your hand holding every five minutes you're likely to be disappointed - as you will be with most, if not all, providers. There are horror stories about ALL of them for God's sake.
Work it out if you prefer red or blue. |
