Does anyone know what the situation is with getting a council place in say Herts or Essex etc and commuting in?
Obviously not possible to get a council place here in London but what about the surrounding areas? |

Social housing is allocated on need and is scarce across the country but particularly in the South-East. Single working people probably have the least chance of securing it.
Some councils may prioritise those with a local connection or refuse those that don't (i.e. that the applicant lives or works there or has relatives to care for, for example). Some offer choice based letting where you register and bid for properties (but hundreds of applicants with much higher points are likely to bid).
I can't think why you would have any better chance of securing social housing in coveted commuter towns and suburbs for the home counties than you would in London.
Nothing to stop you registering with councils and housing associations in the areas you are interested in living if you fit the criteria. |
