hello

me and my daughter are moving into a private rented flat next week and I have been told I may have to pay stamp duty.

Its costing me enough to move in with deposit, first months rent etc and as a single mum I dont know if I can afford anything else!

The rent is £725 per month and it will be on a 12 month tenancy agreement.

PLEASE HELP! I tried calling Inland Revenue but they just kept me on hold for ages. I think it is only 1% but I just dont know if I can afford another £90

Stamp duty is payable by the owner of a property when buying it - it's a tax on property purchase that goes directly to the government.

It's not relevant to anyone renting a property so double check again what the charge is that you are expected to pay in case it has been muddled with something else.

Consider visiting Citizens Advice if you have a query over your rental agreement or charges that your landlord has presented you with.

thanks for the reply

I have read on many websites that the tenant AND the landlord need to pay it

Sorry, me again. Think I am more novice than usual.. Please ignore my last comments which apply to property purchase rather than lettings & sorry for any confusion.

Here's the government info, including calculators and where you can download a leaflet.

Read the following links about Stamp Duty on tenancy agreements and deals with exclusions and the like. Seems to be a voluntary and rarely used charge.
