Brick lane's awesome! Its very trendy and bohemian, lots of cool clubs, bars, shops there and in Shoreditch, just down the road. It's got a fantastic vice and is centrally located, so it's easy to get around from there. I wish I lived there!

Brick Lane & alot of areas in Hackeny & Islington have undergone alot of transformation/ regeneration to clean them up - but it is worth remembering that you still need to watch your back there - as like the east end of old, pick pocketing and mugging is still a regular occurance if you wander down the wrong alley or bump into/look at the wrong people.

Brick Lane, if bearing this criminal element in mind, does have a vibrancy about it, it's some where I'd consider living again as it has a true citylife feel about it & I had ancestors that worked the makets as fishmongers in the past - I've got living relatives up in Bethnall Green - I should really get the courage to go and see again!

I'd feel safer to go up there, if there were more police on the beat as I still trust coppers to do their job.

Though my sense of diplomacy means that I am not given to succinct one liners like englishman...

what's so fab about it? it's a street, albeit a buzzy one with some good restaurants and a pub with a nice big court yard.

but ultimately, it's situated in one of the poorest boroughs in London and one of the most deprived in the UK.

i'm not sure the presence of cheap spicy meals would be enough to lure me to live there.

"At the 2001 census, the borough had the highest rate of unemployment in Great Britain at 12.7%."

Luike I said for me - it's Brick Lane as a multicultural area, ethic diversity - if you are an artist or creative sort, I think it does have some zing to it - I've love to have a large live/work studio in an old warehouse around that area - bucket of oil paints & a large roll of canvas...It has elements of Glastonbury (I've lived there too) about it, you can get proper insense sticks, wide variation of food & snacks and entertainment -things like that - if that's your thing.

I'd be more interested in the old church yard and underground crypts of the area at the moment, looking for Jack The ripper streets and remains of the slums that Jack London talked about, I like going to some of the old pubs where real cockney's still eat gellied eels and talk in a broad london accent, bet on the horses and they all knew someone that knew the crays.

The negative side is definatley there - the mugging, the drug dealing - I just make sure I don't walk too close to door ways where blokes are lurking - never carry a bag (keep money zipped up close to body in money belt or similar) and don't venture out alone after dark, it's nice having a wander around places like Victoria Park in a small group in the day time, looking at all the fabrics and unenglish food on the Whitechapel road markets
- 'Brick Lane' I think sort of represents the heart of the mixture of cultures and an area/radius rather than just the street itself - Like Oxford Street is usually just referring to Oxford street and Hyde Park Corner/Marble Arch are distinct enities one end of it and Oxford Circus is plonked in the centre of the street while is Tottenham Court Road is at the other end an known as a separate area, leading down to the Squares, like Canary Wharf sort of means more than just the tower say.

whats brick lane like? - teaming with tourists on the weekend and flouncy west londoners acting like cockneys for the day. that aside the whole area around is brimming with decent pubs, bars, clubs, shops and restaurants.

What do u about Bricklane, It's one of the trendist place to live in London and house prices are rocketing... A property my mate owns with 7 seven beds is now worth near enough a million.

the city/westends is pretty much walking distance..

One street of samey restaurants does not an area make.

That street represents about 0.025% of Tower Hamlets.

Great if you fancy a curry and a sh*g (street walkers - famous for it down there) but other than that it's nothing to write home about.

Trendy, kind of....

Ethnically diverse, not really..... mostly populated by the Bangladeshi community. With such a high proportion of Bangladeshis living there, with only a smattering of indigenous white British people and others (such asEastern Europeans settling there) it can hardly be called "diverse". However, Tower Hamlets itself IS diverse.

Slum areas, yes...

Poor people and high rates of unemployment, yes too....

I personally wouldn't live there with a family, but as a single man you might enjoy it.

bit blunt, but spot on snap shot of place - I don't know about the Bangladeshi part as I don't know anyone personally from Bangladesh.

I have to say I agree with englishman although I wouldnt put it quite so bluntly. it may have undergone a revamp and have many restaurants and bars added that are all offering the same stuff but underneath it is still a dangerous place and a dirty one. i would not recommend brick lane or any of the surrounding areas unless thats the kind of this your into
