Where to live in london? I have lived in many london areas, i grew up in walthamstow which at that time was ok and still is in some areas as in near to the market place where the snobs now call it waltham forest!!!! Then seven sisters which again was fine but nothing to do at nite and can get a bit scary at nite!
At the moment i am in Hackney which i LOVE!!!! there is so so so much to do, people think its not good as there is no tube!!! but there is a bus to everywhere and getting the buses works out so much cheaper!
Hackney i feel has it all, nice local shops the renting is cheap which helps and the hackney empire on your door step for those cold winter evenings when you want to do something different!
Hackney has always had a bad reputation and i cannot see why london on its own does not have the best reputation and its just what you make of it!
I am not saying Hackney is the best but its not as bad as people make it out to be!
So if you are thinking of moving to london dont go by what you read in the papers go and have a look at all of what the different areas of london has to offer! There is alot more to london then the so called cool areas i.e ''brick lane'' and ''upper street'' oh and the ever so ''COOL'' Church Street.
Go see what East London has to offer you.

I'm moving to London as I'm starting a new job in Walthamstow. I was thinking of moving to Islington for ease of travel but have heard some parts are much better than others. Anyone recommend the best parts? And the same for Hampstead!

Hi, this depends what you mean by 'low cost'. As far as I'm concerned in London it doesn't exist. Having said that, you probably want somewhere quite safe for your kids, and maybe somewhere with some outdoor spaces. If I were you I'd consider the Greenwich area. It still has some reasonably priced accommodation and you might get a bit more space than other places. I'm sure there are other places in London like this, but I can only speak about ones I'm aware of. The centre of Greenwich has a villagey feel and a fab market, good pubs and restaurants, and wonderful outdoor spaces. It also has reasonable transport links to central London.

Generally, you will get more for your money if you live south of the river, but I'd avoid New Cross, Lewisham, Brixton et al if you can help it (the southeast does have a reputation for violent crime) - ok if you are a student I guess but I wouldn't like to bring my kids up there. That said, I probably wouldn't choose to bring my kids up in London at all, but if you've got no choice...

Of course, generally, the further out you live the cheaper the rent (with the exception of 'posh' spots like Richmond Upon Thames et al, but you should consider where you have to travel to go to work, as the money saved on rent might only go towards a higher transport cost.

I am also trying to decide on where to live in London. I will be working near London Bridge and I want to have a quick (up to about 1/2 hour) commute. Of course, the obvious solution is to find a flat (I need a furnished studio/1 bedroom) somewhere near London Bridge, and I did see some within my budget (£200 per week), but... the area is not too pretty and the further south towards Elephant and Castle, the nastier the area becomes (so they say). So I was also thinking about such areas like Greenwich, Blackheath and West/East Dulwich. Are they safe? Are the rail connections from there to London Bridge reliable? Should I definitely avoid ground floor flats because of a risk of break-in?

Can you recommend me some other areas?

the places to live in London changes everytime according to your preferences like staying close to shopping centre, near easy transport links, for business professionals close to any business centre and so on. so first be clear in mind about your requirements and purpose to stay in London and then look around for the best places, it will be easier to find and will make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.

I moved to Brixton a little over a year ago from Holland Park of all places! I've never had any trouble and in my opinion the only people who do are the ones who go looking for it.

It's vibrant, cheap and there are plenty of things to do there and places to go.

People have a tendency to judge it and I'm sure most of them are just going by the negative press (i.e. teenage stabbings) that the place received, and for God's sake, the Brixton riots happened over 20 years ago!

Re Brixton and Hackney - my brother and his wife live in Brixton and love it (and they're kinda yuppies...) and while they have had a bike nicked, that's not bad for 2 years there! And my sister and her partner and 2 kids lived in Hackney for 2 years - down the Victoria Park end, I think - and my mum stayed with them for a few weeks and said she loved it, really vibrant and great bus connections so she didn't even miss the Tube.
Now - I'm moving over there with my boyfriend in August, we have somewhere to stay (yay relatives...) for a couple of weeks, but will be using every moment of that time trying to find our own place, so any insider info I can get ahead of time would be great!
Firstly - he'll be studying at Birkbeck in Bloomsbury, so pretty easy Tube access (Russell Square, Goodge St I think are the closest). He'll also be working, as will I, but we have no idea where yet. We'd like to find an apartment for just the 2 of us, but it's unlikely, as our joint income is unlikely to be more than £40k/pa (and that's if we're lucky!). As I say, I'm not anti Brixton or Hackney or similar places, and ideally would like to get a bike anyway so Tube/bus aren't quite so important for me, but they will be for him. We'd want somewhere with a maximum half-hour commute if possible, and I'm guessing we'd be looking at around £600-£700pcm/£150-£175pw.
So I've only spent a few days in London in total, and am guessing we'd be wanting to live in Zone 2, somewhere where we can walk out the front door without worrying about stepping on sharps or intercepting fights, somewhere with a bit of life (we're in our mid-twenties and like our pubs/bars/sometimes clubs), preferably not a massive apartment complex, close to a bit of open space (someone mentioned Clapham Common?). He's Irish, I'm Kiwi, so I suppose we'd be comfy enough in communities with that sort of a bent, but I'm really not keen on ending up somewhere that's chockful of Aussies/Kiwis doing their 'big OE'... prefer to live with only 1 or 2 other people.
How realistic am I being? What should we be expecting to pay in rent, and what kind of standard should I be hanging out for re apartments? (We're currently living with 2 other professionals in a 3-bedroom apartment, light and airy, fairly big, should I downscale what I'm expecting??) And can anyone recommend anywhere, or particular agents who might help us find this? Also, what are the odds of finding somewhere within 2-3 weeks of arriving in London, we have references and should be able to find jobs relatively easily (I've done a lot of office temping so there's always that!)
Hmmmmmm lots of questions... I'm really really looking forward to moving to London, but it's a big place to find a home in!

Hi, I'm looking to move to London to continue working within a chain of stores I'm already with - well for now anyway. So I could probably get a job in lots of different areas of the city. Problem is I'd be on minimum wage and that's gonna restrict me to flatshares and the like. So where are the cheap/safe areas. Are places as central as the City of Westminster out for someone on minimum wage even if it was a share in a four person flat/house. I'd love to live in Soho but am gloomy about that prospect.

Plus, I'd like to get a scooter to travel on as I take it these are not covered by the congestion charge and parkings cheap or free. But, even with being able to dodge traffic jams on a two wheeler, how far could you live from say central London without clocking up very lengthy commutes?

Dulwich, Greenwich & Blackheath are all v nice areas with nice friendly atmospheres. Also great links into London Bridge & Waterloo. You could spend a lot more money for much worse areas in my opinion. Go for it!!

Good places to live in London are as hard to find as a sober Aus! I've been searching for a decent flatshare or studio for ages and I eventually found on on studios92.com which is a lot like this site. I found these sites really helpful when I was looking for somewhere to live in London, but if you've just arrived and want to be a bit of a tourist before you settle in and develop that stiff upper lip then go on something like gift-tours.com because they helped me plan all of that touristy crap I wanted to do at the beginning like visit the London Dungeon (£21 to see some crusty dummies "dying" of the plague). They also recommended some good restaurants so I didn't get fleeced because food in the touristy parts is pricey!

Anyway hope this helps...have a good time - I LOVE THIS CITY!
