I have recently made 2 enquiries regarding flats on Gumtree and had very similar responses to each. My gut immediately told me something was up, and having read some of the posts on here it seems I was right.

The first was re ref 18052337. I made a general enquiry got this response...

The place is very well connected with transport:and many more (most of them do night services aswell).Very close to shops, banks, Post Office,restaurants, pubs, fitness .
Large livingroom, Double Bedroom, Spacious lounge,fully fitted,large kitchen with washing machine,fridge,freezer,microwave, etc. Gas central
heating,telephone, tv points and internet facilities.
Situated on ground floor, fully self contained,access front and rear,

Thanks so much for the reply and interest in my Flat.Just want to tell you that its a large 1bedroom Flat with Garden.
However,i will be willing to meet you,get to know you and show you round the flat so that you can see what you are renting.
But the issue is that i have been having problems with time wasters with regards to making the payment for the Flat and this is really time wasting because i am presently on a field trip in Manchester for a research,but have my Laptop here to reply to emails.
However,how am i going to be sure that i will not be disappointed around when i come to show you the flat?Please understand that i am NOT asking you to pay for what you have not seen.People have told me that they will pay upon us meeting if they are satisfied but they all don't have the money to pay,everyone of them is looking for a free or cheaper Flat to rent despite the fact that i have made the rent Cheap.
Pls,i need you suggestion here because you can't pay for what you have not seen,it is not advisable.
However,i am also discussing with my Colleague here as regards idea on what i can do.I will get back to you or you suggest on what to do so that we can arrange a meeting and the viewing of the flat.Thanks while i will be waiting read from you.
The neighborhood is safe and i guess you have heard much about this area before,so its safe, clean area.

I am guessing they will both inevitably suggest a Western Union transfer to solve this tricky dilemma!! I'm going to respond to each and see how long it takes for "inspiration" to hit!

Thanks for the reply.I understand you quite okay.However,i do not want to stand on peoples promise of paying me cash or cheque when we meet again because i have met with time wasters.
I was discussing with my colleague about the idea on how i will be so sure that i will not be coming down to London on a futile exercise and she advised that we can work out something via Western Union Transfer.
She made me to understand that she has used it a couple of times for renting out her flat.She said that western union can actually hold the money as an evidence and surety that her tenant will pay her at least for the first month and deposit.She explained that you can visit any Western union outlet and transfer the money IN YOUR FRIEND NAME as the SENDER and RECEIVER will be in YOUR NAME.-You will use his/her name as the SENDER and AFTER viewing and you are okay with the flat,we both can go back to withdraw your money from western union close to my flat as she said she has done transactions this way before.

I do not want you to have the feeling that i am asking for money BEFORE you see what you are renting because i know that payment is meant to be done AFTER you have seen the Flat and okay with it.-The reason why you have to be receiver is basically to give you the confidence that your money is still in your name and to make sure that your money is still safe since it is still in you name as the receiver as you are the only one who can collect it with a valid ID,maybe with a passport or drivers license.
So in order for me to also be on a good side,you can go ahead and make the transfer since you have the money ready,let me know immediately you do the transfer so that i can know how to squeeze out time to come and meet you.But i will have to rely on your honesty and truth that you have actually make the payment before i leave here to come down to London to see you.What evidence will you give me so that I can be sure that you have made the payment? I was made to understand that you can SCAN THE RECEIPT to me to see.

Yeah, I had one of the 'I'm too busy to come down from Manchester so i need the deposit up-front' and two of the 'I'm sorry but i've been stung by timewasters before and i need a deposit up front' emails since listing here a week ago.

The cupid stunts sent me the same picture of the 'flat' on offer for each of the second emails, even though one was in Belgravia - hello 'clarajones77@yahoo.com' if you're reading this! - and one was in Islington !

Just be wary. NEVER give money up front till you've got their details, seen the place and all the othe information you need to call the police or go round there with a few of your friends if it all goes awry.

And to Gumtree. If you want to be a good corporate citizen- please, please, have a link to the 'scams' emails up front on your site ? Huh ? Otherwise all you are doing is taking money from your advertisers to run a site which aids and abets these thieves.

So how's about a little corporate responsibility ?

God, if it wasn't so sad it would be funny. These people are really giving me the shits! I had an ad on gumtree looking for a room last year and I never had this kind of hassle. This time my ad has been on for 1 week and 70% of the responses have been from scammers. Uuuuuggh!

'Caren Williams' is also going by the name 'Aimee Smith' as this is the exact email I received today. I'm sure the nasty little lying wench would have gone onto to try the whole western union thing as the conversation went further but I think I made them nervous by asking for their correct phone number as they had 'accidentally' left out a digit...also the posting was deleted from gumtree just after I emailed them about the flat and I qustioned that, so I doubt I'll be hearing from them again now.

I had the same dogey behaviour about 6 months ago also with someone going by the name of 'Kerry Bullock' who was trying the same old western union scam.

The same wrong telephone number is on there with a digit missing 44790448237 - this was on the Aimee Smith one they were trying to scam me with...

I have reported them to gumtree, but just to warn you to STAY CLEAR - THEY ARE A BLATENT SCAMMER & will inevitably reel off some crap about working in Manchester, wanting someone to look after their flat, blah, blah, blah and then ask you to pay by western union as 'so many people have messed me around' - Come on, at least think of something new & original...Jeeez!!

For the last few days we have been contacted by Idfratan Helene about a flat using the email, idfratan.helene@googlemail.com she also suggested Western Union etc. We were suspicious from the start as knew the area the flat was advertised in and from the pictures could tell this flat wasn't in the area (Camden) as showed georgian sash windows and the flat was supposedly in an ex-council establishment!!
She was under the impression that we would undertake the western union transaction and then go to see the flat (once her lawyer had confirmed the receipt was genuine!!) and we would 'fall in love with it' and sign the contract there and then - after which we would go and pick up our western union transfer and pay the deposit etc. Very dodgy!
But what we still cannot figure out is how would they get any money from this?? Obviously if anyone was silly enough to fall for it they still wouldnt have any substantial money on them?!
She also sent a 'contract' which included the sentence :
Minimun stay: however long you wanna stay
and an id, saying she was a france citizen hence ID FRA(nce) ?
So basically, just wondering what they get out of this??
