there have been lots of fraud on gumtree and i have been a victim of the fraud, i reported to the police about this but i was told they can't do anything about this. i was also told to contact gumtree on this and i'm thinking on suing gumtree for allowing fraud and scams without doing anything to stop this. anybody knows any way i can collect my money from this guy. Also gumtree should change their system on stuff for sale. anybody advertising to sell on gumtree must provide their postal address and make it available to buyers. the seller's name that scammed me is james townsend, and he advertised the ps3 with the desribtion as 'collection or delivery' and the location is chelt, so beware of this guy. another seller who recently advertised on gumtree is Liam buckley, he is also a theif who have scammed so many people.

GUMTREE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS FRAUD TO PROTECT THE BUYERS. ANYBODY AGREE

i paid to his bank account the reason was that he gave me the option to pay and collect in peson which made me believe he is real, and since i'm in london and he claimed to be in cheltenham i decided to pay him. after payment he sent an email that he has sent it through parcelforce but i didn't receive it and he decided to refund me. but i haven't got my money, he is always giving excuses for not being able to pay like making a mistake when sending the money. the bastard even text me that he will pay me last monday but he didn't he then text this tuesday that he will pay by today but he hasn't. i have called the police but they said i should contact gumtree.

In the far past I have had a similar "can't help mate" response from the Police on a road traffic matter. The solution I found was to write them a formal letter, preferably quoting the law/act which has been broken. That seemed to prompt them into making investigations, although ultimately it did not help me much.

Good luck

Hi yes i have fallen into his trap!! i paid him £95 by postal order and have not heard anything back!

i am not well and havnt been for a while i have 2 young daughters and my partner works damn hard to support us, and all i wanted was to give him a wii for his birthday.

mr buckley said he could help me and would accept £130, i told him i couldnt afford it so he said he buys them for £85 and will accept £95 so i stupidly paid him.

i am in touch with the police they dont seem too bothered at the moment.... they will be tho! im going to chase this tosser down until my last breath even if it means me knocking on his door!

people shouldnt be aloud to mug people off..... yes its my fault for paying out of stupidity and being too trusting but i should be able to trust people. and hes just f***ed me off to the brim now.......so look out liam you've met your match!!!!

You'll chase him down with your last breath. I have been scammed in the past and from experience, you don't bother, it's not worth it. Liam is being dealt with by the police. He is likely to get sent down. He was scammed by his supplier, so I've been told and he just got caught up in the mess. Instead of telling people he couldn't deliver, he thought he could find another supplier and get the goods, better later than never. He wasn't or isn't smart enough to see beyond the money, and he must have found it easier to lie. You've been cheated, whichever way you look at it, but move on.

I've known the same thing with a friend's son a few years ago, same thing - buy's something off the internet - supplier offers to cut them in on the deal as a distributor - everything goes smoothly for the first few transactions and then - wallop - it all stops. You've got clients who have paid in good faith - you can't get the goods, your hounding the supplier, your customers are hounding you - if you're smart you come clean - repay the money, even if you've lost. If you're dumb, you continue to take money in the hope of finding a new supplier. But you end up playing catch up and you're stuck in it up to your neck.

Liam is a 22 year old kid. He's living with his gran and uncle who are decent law abiding citizens and his stupidity and lack of backbone has caused a lot of distress. If he was your son or brother or nephew, you'd want to give him a hiding yourself. The courts will deal with him - leave them to do their job. He's getting his come-uppance - and that my friend is your justice. Unless of course you want to be in court for taking the matter into your own hands.

hi gums,
Do you have any proposals for standing up to them and defeating them?

The only thing i can think of is to raise peoples awareness that there are scammers out there and that everyone is not as nice as you and me.

I do feel there could be some higher profile warnings on the advertising boards.

what are your thoughts?

BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO AGAINST PEOPLE who can take out an anonymous email address and ask to be paid by an untraceable method?

one thought has been for gumtree to charge a nominal sum for ads to deter scammers but that goes against the whole gumtree concept
