Hello,
With reference to your mail, I have stunning 2 bedrooms lofty style apartment situated on Gower Street - London - WC1E 6BT.Offered furnished and the property comprise large open plain fully fitted kitchen with all mod cons and lounge - diner, 1 x mezzanine single bedroom-study, 2nd dbl bedroom and separate fully tiled bathroom with bath and power shower. Other features include plain walls and neutral carpets throughout. Private garden and Lounge. Perfect for professional person(s),couples and students. With internet facilities.

The nearest tube station is Euston Square Tube station and it's just a few mins drive from Hearthrow Airport. (oh yeah? how does that work?)

The flat will go for 700 per month (all bills inclusive) and I will be collecting 3 months advance deposit payments. (I DONT THINK SO)

According to the Valuation Agency, the flat is rated A so, it cost less than 1000GBP.

You will be living alone on the flat as I have relocated out of UK, so viewing will not be possible now until I am sure you are a real tenant, I have come to London on this same issue and wasted my time and money for nothing. I would not want to do this again.

I have attached some pics here for you to have a nice view.

Let me know your decision.

Hi this is Louise Mamo,
a vicious agent posted my email on this forum claiming I was doing MONEYGRAM SCAMS
. This posting was only shown to me today and it was live from 3rd March 2008.
I have contacted Gumtree who have fully investigated it and have informed me it was another agent, and there claims were completely unjust.
Because of the fact , IT WAS ALL LIES Gumtree have removed this posting but they can not give me the details of whoever posted it due to some law.
This persons claim was MALICIOUS and UNFOUNDED.
I have housed hundreds if not thousands of happy people over the years, I take pride in what I do and enjoy it. I have NEVER and NEVER WOULD scam someone. I have never had a complaint made against me to Gumtree or anyone else.
I am hurt and disgusted that someone would try and discredit me in this way and have no idea who it is or why they would do this.

BUTTERFLY 13 LIES

BUTTERFLY 13 posted this about me on the FORUM
http://forums.gumtree.com/about157413.html

As you can see Gumtree have removed it.

THIS IS BECAUSE IT IS TOTALLY FALSE

[b]they informed me BUTTERFLY13 is another agent, however they couldn't give me there details due to privacy law etc.

I have advertised on GUMTREE for the last 2 years and have never had a complaint made against me.

I HAVE NEVER SCAMMED SOMEONE AND DO NOT EVER ASK FOR PAYMENT VIA MONEY GRAM ONLY BANK TRANSFER INTO MY BUSINESS ACCOUNT OR CASH.

My company ACCESS ALL AREAS ONLINE LTD has been trading for 2 years, I have successfully house hundreds of people and enjoy what I do I would not and never have scammed anyone.

THIS WAS PURELY A MALICIOUS ATTACK BY A SPITEFUL AGENT

Kind regards

I responded to a similar ad - Marylebone, 2 bed, £120 - and got a whole long story about this person being stuck in Liverpool with their sick and dying mother, how it's oh so hard to get to London to meet serious tenants, people can't pay, woe is me etc. This was followed by 2 calls by a withheld number to my mobile after I supplied the details, each time I answered the caller hung up. Finally this evening I get an email asking me to wire a deposit and the ID details via Western Union BEFORE viewing the flat so he knows I'm 'good for the money'. He says: "Nb:I can see you are really serious and desperate in renting the flat so i have turned down other interested parties offer so i need you treat my emails with concern" (sic)
HA!
Next someone will be emailing me asking for my bank details claiming to be an African prince sitting on oil millions. What? They're already doing that? Oh... Rolling Eyes
Either way, avoid Fowler Johnson <fowlershop01@live.com> and F Johnson <fowrever2007@live.com> . It's the same person. This is the mobile number they give: 07031814446. I've not tried it. Be wary.

The same thing happened to us....and we feel so embarassed and stupid right now. we were all penniless students as it was, hopin to find somewhere before the next term started. We are normally very intelligent ans sensible people...but obviously we are also too trusting!! have learnt a valuable lesson. Just a shame it had to be an expensive one.....everyone beware of anything to do with western union and to be frank just don't use them as a service full stop as their overall security precautions are a joke. We are in the process of reporting to the police, but hoping seeing many people are being preyed upon that someone will start to take notice and some certain changes may happen....can only hope!! Sad

ive just been in conversation via email with someone trying to do the same scam.

It was on an apartment in North Acton which seemed to be too good to be true. Her name was Anne Ashton and email address jstooley@yahoo.com apparently living in Italy after getting a job transfer.

I explained to her that i was not willing to leave the funds in my friends account and that after the money transfer took place i would store the money in the safe at work. for her to collect it from there.

She received this email and said she would be down on sunday. I waited all day for her. No show.

Ive since heard from her requesting for the money transfer to take place again. Ive reminded her the money shall stay in a safe. Ive not heard back...

i feel for everyone that has been frauded in this matter.. Desperation for accomodation causes people to take risks. I was lucky enough that i had time to think it through every step of the way to cover myself...

thank god...otherwise it could very well been a flight back home after breaking the bank.

Good lucky to everyone.. and please be careful

Beware of this number as it will cost you to call it. Most '070' numbers are premium rate numbers, so do not call them unless you have a lot of money to spare!

I have just had a similar one from a certain bruce onward email: bruceonwardflat@gmail.com

the post code he gave me doesn't even seem to contain a property as described on the email, I checked it on the birds eye view on microsoft virtual earth and it just has commercial properties.
I asked for a viewing and sure enough I got a request for a moneygram to a friend to the tune of £1100......

I would think they are using the same pictures for the rooms in the house, be good if gumtree would allow some of the pics to be shown on this forum just to give an early warning to people of the scammers

I have recently moved to London from Australia. I too was ALMOST sucked in by this MoneyGram scammer. I transferred 1040GBP from my gf's name to my name. I then scanned the MoneyGram receipt, claimed the cash back at the post office, and THEN sent the receipt to the scammer. He wasnt too happy. See trail of emails below;

Hi,
My name is Denis and I have the flat for rent. The rent is 520£ per month including all bills and the concil tax. I moved in Milan,Italy because I got a new job. I work in a hospital. You can rent the flat as long as you need to stay even for 2 or 3 years. The first payment will be for 2 months(1040£).In case you want it, let me know so we can arrange the transaction. For me is very hard to come in UK and if I will come i must be 100% sure that I will not come for nothing. As you can see in the photos everything it's new in the flat and the flat
is fully furnished, newly refurbished and also benefits from wood flooring. You have internet connection, phone, washing machine with dryer, cable TV and most important parking place.
I wait your response.

Hi,
I work in a hospital and is very hard for me to come in UK. I can't take the risk to leave my new job for days and when I arrive in UK to see that I come for nothing. I want to be 100% sure that when I will meet you, we do the rent papers then i can come back in Italy.
So i can be sure of that look how we can do:
You make the payment from your name and address to your best friend name and address in UK using MoneyGram for 2 months rent that means 1040 GBP and send me the scanned receipt. As soon as I see the scanned receipt that you have made the payment, I will come in UK and you will see the flat and maybe rent it. After that, we will go together at the MoneyGram office and you will take the money back and pay me.So all you have to do is to find a MoneyGram office and wire 1040 GBP from your name to your friend name and send the scanned receipt.I am asking you this to be sure that I do not come in UK for nothing. I hope you understand.
P.S : As I told you,I have a lot of customers interested to rent the apartment. I will reserve the apartment to the first one that provides me the scanned paper from MoneyGram. As soon as I have the confirmation from MoneyGram that the money are available on his name I stop the transactions with all the other customers !

Hello Joe,
I attached some pics.I will wait tomorrow the scanned receipt from Money Gram. There will be an extra fee that I will deduct it from the total rent. The money will stay in the Money Gram system till I will come in London. Then you will pick up the money and pay me.
I guarantee you that you will love the place.
Many thanks!

Denis,

The photos look great. I would like to proceed with renting your flat.

I will send the Money Gram tomorrow. OR to make matters easier, I have attached a PDF of my internet banking page after I set up my HSBC accounts today. As you can see, I have 1040GBP in my Premier Save account. You will also notice today's date, 14th April, and my name Joseph XYXY. If this is ok, then all we need to do is talk about when you are free to come to London so I can make sure I am here, as I have to fly to Malta within the next week for a work meeting regarding a project there.

(My friend in London works in the financial markets, hence it would be impossible to get him to a MoneyGram outlet until the weekend. I thought this would be an easier way)

If not, I can still proceed with the MoneyGram process.

Thanks

Joe

Hello Joe,
I prefer Money Gram and the extra fee from Money Gram I will deduct it from the total rent.
I will wait tomorrow the scanned receipt.I can be in London this weekend, for sure on Saturday.
Have a nice day!

Denis,

As promised please refer to the attached MoneyGram transaction receipt for 1040GBP. The fee charged was 54GBP.

Please advise when you fly into London so that we can arrange a time to see the property.

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Joe,

I just received the scanned receipt.I will check with MoneyGram and if all is ok I will buy a plane ticket and fly to London. The money are still in MoneyGram office right?

Thanks and email me!

Denis,

Sorry the money is no longer with MoneyGram. I withdrew it this afternoon. I don't trust my money with anybody other than my bank. I sent you the receipt to show you that I have the money, and I am serious. If you are not happy with this, then lets not waste each others time.

Otherwise I look forward to meeting you in London to see the property.

Regards,

Joe

I told you from the beggining that the money must stay in MoneyGram office and after we amke the rent papers we will go together at the office and you will take them back and pay me.I am sorry but unless you make the transfer again and this time leave the money in MoneyGram I will have to rent the flat to someone else.

Thanks!

Denis

Explain to me why does the money have to stay with MoneyGram?

Joe

Joe

because after we make the rent paper when we will go together at the office and when you will take the money back you will have to show your ID and then i will be sure that you are real and that you have the money.I hope you understand.I know that you will have to pay the fee again but we will split the fee or I will deduct it from the rent money.

Thanks and email me!

Denis,

With all due respect, if I wasnt real, why would I have wasted 54GBP and 3 hours this morning at the local post office? I hope you understand, I simply do not trust my money with MoneyGram.

I have emailed you my bank statements yesterday, as well as depositing the cash with MoneyGram today. When you arrive in London, and we see the property, I am happy to sign any necessary rental contract as well as go straight to my bank (ATM) and withdraw the money for 2 months rent.

Regards,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Tell me if you will be able to make the transfer again?

Thanks and email me

Denis

Denis,

I have already shown you I am serious by sending you my bank statements and spending 54 GBP for this MoneyGram transaction. Not too mention wasting my time at the post office and sending emails back and forward.

If you do not trust me based on what I have sent you, then I must say that your insistence on using MoneyGram gives me reason not to trust you.

So if you are not happy with that, then you will have to find somebody else to rent your property. However if you are legitimate, I will see you in London over the coming days.

Regards,

Joe

Stuff like this really upsets me. I am a trustworthy person and I didn't think it was so hard to expect the same in return. It is sad to know that I now have to approach every situation with caution and distrust.

My heart goes out to you lot that didn't get stopped in time.

This one was more crafty: Allianz Group, a financial services comapny, will hold my deposit, 3 months rent-1500 pounds, in escrow until I send payment to a Michael Brown at One Picadilly Gardens in Manchester [wtf!? no] via, Western Union.

Mathilda Watson was the landlord aka "mathildawa@gmail.com".

Recently had a car accident that left her deaf and killed her husband. Lives at "17 Averof Street in Athens, Greece 10433"

Property was 2 bedroom Mediterranean-style fully furnished Cleveland Square, Bayswater for 500 p/m. Didn't want to see it be empty, yadda yadda yadda....

Hi there I´m a student from Germany and I´m looking for a studio or 1 bedroom apartment.
i´m so glad that I read a lot at this forum before I did something.

I got the same email from the woman from greek.
And now I wrote a lot with a guy and this is the newest email.
He want a secure deposit over western union.
I made a test. I wrote that I have a friend in London and I book a flight and want to watch the property.
So this is what he wrote:
Thanks for getting back to me. Yes you are to pay the deposit alone since you are not in Uk now. You can go ahead and send the security deposit to my lawyer by western union and as soon as he recieve the money you will be emailed the contract form for you to fill and then send back to him via email.
You are to send him 1000 pounds.

Concerning how the secure you have i can get my british passport scanned and send to you for you to know that am really and more so i can get you the recent bill of the property for you to see.
Ask me any other thing that you want.

Get back to me as soon as you can

and then after I told him I got a friend and come to London:

Thanks for getting back to me that wil be a better idea or better still your friend can view the property for you on your behalf but first before i can show you the property i will need to see the prrof that you have the money read for the security deposit and 1 month rent fee.
So al you need to do is just get the 1736 pounds send to your friend in London by western union and after you get it send to him you will scan the reciept given to you and send it to me via email for me to see that yo uhave the money then after i confirm it i will email you to tell your friend to pick the money up and then you tell me when you can come for the viewing so that i can tell me lawyer to prepare all the necessary documents ready. You can as well be the reciever all you need to do is juat use your friend's name as the sender and you r name will be the reciever so when you get to london yo ucan be able to pick the money up.

Get back to me if this is understood by you.
________________________________________

and then I wrote him that I send the money this morning and my friend pick it up, if he want the scan of the paper:

Thanks for getting back to me concerning the viewing . I have talked to my lawyer and he said that you should send the money via western union to your name so that when you get here you will be the one to pick it up since you don't trust your friend. Then after you made the transfer to your name you will get the reciept given to you scanned and email it to me for me to confirm that you have the money and when we meet for the viewing we will be giving you back the transfer charges and after viewing the property you will go to the nearest western union and pick the money up since you are the receiver.

Get back to me as soon as you can.

I very nearly fell for this, but after looking at this page, I dashed to the post office and got my money back. The thing is, it was supposed to be a woman, but a man rang me on behalf of her last night, saying we are to meet today. Suffice to say, I am not going. I can't believe I nearly got stung for £1500, but I guess I was desparate to get a flat for my family.

Appeared on easyroommate.com which seems to be full of dodgy adverts of central london flats less than £400pcm. Will provide you with a 'lease agreement', photos and passport scan of some random person, and persist on sending you sending a £400 western union money transfer before any viewing has been arranged. Anyone who does not care to meet you face to face is very questionable!

ok so the only response my boyfriend and I get from gum tree are people wanting western union transfers... here is an example of one TODAY! I have tried to report this but alas the link is down for upgrade (posting ref: 23114519)...

The story so far, I called this guy, he says he is in the middle of dinner and to email him my details, this is what transpired...

Subject: Responding to the flat advertised on gum tree for 115 pw at South Kensington

Hi,

I contacted you briefly to which I was advised to email you. I'm responding to the flat advertised on gum tree for 115 pw at South Kensington. My boyfriend and I are a professional Australian couple, who work in IT, and are currently residing in xxxxxx. We have been looking for a new place and the flat looks ideal.

We do have a few questions, these being:
*Is the flat sharing with anyone? if so how many?
*What is the layout of the flat? is the room in question located on a specific floor ie ground or 2nd floor?
*What documents are needed if we wish to rent this flat?

We are available to look at any night this week, after 5:30pm.

Feel free to give me a call on xxxxxx or just drop me an email Smile

Cheers,

Hello,
How are you doing today?I just got your email. The apartment is £115 per week and you are required to pay a 1month and a 6weeks deposit, all bills inclusive.I am looking to rent for a long term lease and a minimum of 6months.Unfortunately,I am currently in Liverpool with my mum,she is very sick now and she is undergoing a surgery operation so i have to stay with her so before I can come and show you around for the viewings,I need to know how serious you are about the renting the property because I wont like to come down all the way from Liverpool to be fooled as I have been in the past. And to know if you are capable of paying the house rent. The flat comprises of bedrooms,Living Room, spacious open plan kitchen,2 modern bathrooms and communal garden,Only 3 minutes walk from tube station and all shopping amenities.

For instance,I organized a viewing for some professionals last week and they refused showing up and I came all the way from Liverpool.Hope you understand my reasons for saying all this?So I just need to know how serious you are.I have the pictures of the flat on the site so you can view pictures there.I also require you to email me more informations and details about yourself.

Do email me back as soon as possible so we can do the viewings as soon as possible.

Thanks
