i recently posted a room to rent under short term rentals. I received an email from someone saying that they wanted to rent the room over the summer. They said that they were coming to england for the summer and needed a room. All seemed fine untill i received a cheque in the post for £4000 pounds. Upon contacting the person they said that there was a mistake and could i pay the cheque into my account and when it cleared, take whatever i owed out of the amount and then transfer the remaining amount to them via western union money transfer. This is when alarm bells started to ring. When i took the cheque in to the bank they confirmed that it was a fraud. However they only noticed because i raised concerns about the cheque. If i had not raised concerns the cheque would have been processed and the funds would have been available in my account within 4 working days. Assuming i fell for the fraud i would have transfered the funds thinking that the cheque had cleared. After this about two weeks later the cheque would have raised flags on the system and the bank would have demanded the total sum of money back leaving my almost £3000 pounds down. I urge any one who is thinking about dealing with any one from overseas that they have not meet to take care. The other thing was that they were very keen to pay me straight away and wanted my bank details. Again very suspicious.
