Hello,
I'm looking to move to London in about august, and wonder if anyone can offer me some practical advise!
I have NO idea where I should live! I can transfer my job easily, as I work for a large multi national comapny with locations all over london!
I'd like to stay within the lower zones until I find my feet, so maybe would be looking a lower zone location for the first six months. I wonder what kind of price I'd be looking to pay for this, I'd take a room within a shared property, or a teeny weeny studio, even a residence hall!
Also I would like to know how much I would need to earn to have a comfortable enough tiime in London! I don't expect to be earning huge money, but what do you guys think would be needed, given all the travel, rent, and a few nights socialising would be needed to do in London!
Thanks in advance! |

When you say lower zones, do you mean Central London, such as zones 1 and 2? If so, you'll find rents there are far higher than further out (say zones 4 and 5) and far higher again than elsewhere in the UK. A studio in zone 1 can easily be over £1000 per month, zone 2 over £900 per month. Things get cheaper as you move further out but somewhere decent in zone 5 will still be around £600. Shared houses are cheaper... starting at around £400 per month but increasing as you move towards the centre. Plus you need to factor bills on top (inc council tax).
A zones 1-2 annual travelcard is just under £1000 per year, going up to £1784 for zones 1-6. You can still get a cheap night out in London if you know where to look, but generally beer is about £3 a pint.
Hope that helps! |

Hey bored receptionist - I'm in the same situation as you, so maybe we could help each other out. I'm a kiwi, moving to london August 2, and have no idea what I'll do, or where I'll live and I'm kind of freaking out now.
My qualification takes forever to be recognised in the UK and it's a very slow process and bar work doesn't really appeal, do you have any advice for me? |
