Evil or Very Mad Are you sick of going to look at a room and then not hearing ever again? What about the timewasters who drag you around, show you a tiny over priced room and then claim they have "other people" to see? Or equally irritating send you a really snotty message saying you wern't their type. Well name them here!
I'll go first shall I? (I've omitted a few, particually the nutter as it really wasn't the poor guy's fault and the scammers)

MAURIZO ? - HACKNEY
Was aware that he'd have to hold the room for a week before getting the deposit, invited to see it anyway. Changed his mind.

EILEEN JACOBS - OVAL
Claimed I had to see the room right away then said she was in no rush, never heard anything again, but then this was the woman who'd partioned off half her council flat. (If you hate people that much, don't let out a room!)

EMELIA HOLDAWAY - HACKNEY
Another time waster, this one seemed delighted when I agreed to become a co-tenant, seemed pretty sincere, said she'd be in touch, eventually got an email claiming she'd given the rooms to a friend.

PAULA J EVANS - LEYTONSTONE
TINY room, way out towards Essex, room was so small the wardrobe was on the landing. Agreed to accept it though. Had to sit through an uncomfortable formal type interview in which at one point the two flatmates decided to ignore me and start a conversation to each about a friend of theirs. Still thought I might have a chance. Got an email a week later saying I "didn't quite fit"

THE LATEST ?
Whose name will be appearing here if I don't here anything in the next few days.

It certainly sounds like you have had your time wasted a bit, on a number of occasions. However, when you said "What about the timewasters who drag you around, show you a tiny over priced room and then claim they have "other people" to see?" - don't you think that is normal to want to see a selection of potential tenants, when letting out a room? Would you let a room automatically to, say, the first person who came to look at it?

I've just had a constant stream of people coming through our flat, most of whom were completely unsuitable. We certainly did not want to spend too long on this task. There were a couple of people that we liked a lot, & we then made a final decision. I think it is important to choose carefully when sharing your flat/house with someone, for so many reasons. I have lived with some absolute nightmares in the twelve years I have been in London - & in every case, I did not have a say about them moving in, as I had moved into an existing flatshare/the landlord let the rooms individually. I'll never make those mistakes again.

But Diamond would you tell them directly or just claim you have other people to see and never contact them again?

Well, if they were not suitable for an obvious reason (they were a smoker or had pets, for example, & had not read my advertisement properly), I would tell them there & then. If they were a "possible", then I would say I would get back to them. I'd also say the same if they were "freaky" (like the guy who turned up recently & made a disturbing joke about wanting to stab to death the lady in front of him in the queue at Tesco the day before....).

In many ways, applying for a room is just like applying for a job, in my opinion. I do contract work, & hence attend a lot of job interviews. I don't remember the last time I was contacted to advise me that I was NOT successful. Not in London, at least (when I lived in New Zealand, agencies/companies normally did) - but then again, London is a faster-paced place. I don't take it personally, it's just one of those "London Things".

looked round and said to her dad who was there we were definately interested and would contact her on monday to sort everything out.

couldn't they have bloody said that when i phoned her or just have answered my messages in the first place.

Twisted Evil That's exactly why you should name and shame her here!
My latest (the one I wasted all sunday on) claimed he'd be back to me within a day and nothing so here we are.

being stupid and thick (but not as much as some) i didn't get her name!
the address is 164 saunders street, gillingham, kent.

i am so irritated with these people and the bloody scammers, i've had so many including one bloke JAMES BERNARD and another BENTON KATY, answered an ad i'd put up yesterday quite clearly stating where we are prepared to live in london (or as you are aware happy pole - more kindly referred to by myself as the shithole), so apart from not reading my ad in the least bit, which annoyed me enough they both then offer us several flatshares in finsbury park AT a WEEKLY rent of only £340!
lets just say i was less than polite with the reply!

Do you work in the British tourism industry, Happypole? If so, I guess this goes some way towards explaining the warm, helpful, "Fawlty-Towers-esque" welcome that tourists tend to get in the UK. On the other hand, if you are referring to the breed of tourist that (whilst wearing a huge backpack) stops without looking & blocks a stream of people trying to get past in a narrow Tube carriage/city street - then you have my sympathies to an extent Smile

Exactly the last sort, the sort that tend to be middle aged, American and wearing bright pink trackies. It's more the arrogance from them, they seem to think they're immune to getting their heads kicked in, I once had a go at a Californian guy in Krakow who told a group of young Poles that the UK had backed the wrong side in the war! He genuinely couldn't understand why that wasn't an entirely sensitive comment. Other than that most seem fine.

Am with Happypole here. People should be as specific as possible in their adverts about what kind of person they wish to share with. They should rememeber that often the person that goes to look at the room has prob travelled a lots and maybe had to take time off work. To arrive and find that your not suitable over something that could have been said in the advert is def a time-waster. Same goes for those numbskulls that fail to read an advert properly!!

Ha-ha! Very Happy Am planning on leaving the world of flat/housesharing behind me in the next few months by getting my own 1-bed flat. Even having the best flat-share in the world can't compete with having your own space!!!

But your still right in what you say about time-wasters. Get everything narrowed down via a well-worded advert & a nice phone call to confirm everythig else/develpo a rapport. Then we would all run into less time-wasters and have more things to spend time on!!

The problem with timewasters is that they can come from both ends of the spectrum. My partner and I were very nearly duped last month, thankfully we spotted the duplicity of it all, and ran as fast as we could!

The add from yet another time waster/scammer. He wants you to leave a months deposit (doesn't say so in the add) - without a receipt whilst he carries out a credit check on you, also wants a copy of your passport and other documents like payslips etc - would you seriously part with a months money on the pretext of a credit check without a receipt and no proof of where the landlord lives - stay away from this one or you could potentially lose your money and leave yourself open to identity theft.
