Hi,Look out for Alton Baldwin he tried to scam me yesterday.I new it was going to be a scam even before he replied to me email.I have actually been successful in renting a property ( not from this site ) but just went along with his emails.By the time he'd sent his second email he was asking me to send money thru western union claiming he was in Liverpool and the same old thing about time wasters and him traveling. The photos he sent were laughable you could tell a mile off they were from a mag or something.I reported him thru the like of the first email that came from this site and recieved a reply within 15 mins from admin that he'd be investigated.I know there's nothing that can be done but we can try.So look out for him

That sounds like the same guy who tried to scam me, but he went by the name "Jerry Smith"... he was definitely not English, though.

I forgot, he sent me his identity, have a look, it might be your passport.

there is no problem in viewing the apartment but am not in london now. am in cambridge for an officail visit but that would not deprive me from coming to london to show you the apartment. you could not believe that i came to london 4 times last week to show the apartment to some people who are interest but eventually it turned out to be wasting of time on my side..loose so many things at work cos my salary is calculated based on number of hours i spend at work....which means i wil have to leave my work to show you the aparmtment..i cant leave certainity for uncertainity that is the reason why i need a prove that you are capable of renting the place. i hope you understand this idea.

I was approached by Jean Boutier also when I posted an ad looking for a flat.. though we hadn't made it too far into the negotiating yet. How did you know this was a scammer? I was approached by a few blatantly obvious scammers, but this one had me on the chain a bit.

It was obvious for me he was a scammer. If someone offers a luxioury flat for very little money it is clear to be a scam. Besides, he tells the same story about being away now busy at work and about how some prospective tenants wasted his time etc. A serios landlord never send you a scan of a passport and never writes so many sentences, just gives you the most important details of flat and a mobile nb.scammers always make silly stories which are unbelieveble. And the pictures of the flat he sent- beautiful but taken from websites, and absolutely do not match together. and the cost of rent- 750? for one bedroom flat inclusive?- i do not believe in charity organisation.

gumtree (ebay) just sits back and allows these people to scam.
I posted an ad looking for a flat and got 5 emails, all of them scammers.

all want western union or some other wire transfer. IP numbers show they are in Netherlands or Nigeria. They even give 070 numbers which are not UK mobiles but personal 'forwarding' numbers that route calls through to them overseas. It's all a big scam day after day yet gumtree wont do anything about it.

They could get the cops involved but mayor boris is more interested in high profile crimes where his name can be mentioned...and gumtree just want to make money

Unfortunately little can be done. The only way to slightly deter scammers from posting on the site would be to charge a fee for every posting, but you would still have scammers responding to genuine ads posted by law abiding people.

Gumtree is not only interested in money, as most of the postings are free, with the exception of some job postings and accommodation posts for letting agents (yet some dodgy agents try to post as private landlords to avoid the fee). Still, can you imagine the bandwith costs of a site like this?

The best way to avoid scams is to follow gumtree's stay safe section, never wire money via Western Union or other method to a person you do not know, never pay upfront fees just to see a property.

Also, be a bit more realistic. If you are responding to ads in accommodation, and you see an advert for a Notting Hill 2 bedroom flat for £150 per week all bills included, then it is obvious its a scam.

Unfortunately, there is little that can be done to get rid of scammers, blocking IP addresses? It is easy to connect via a proxy server and change your IP.

Gumtree DOES give a shit about scammers, and they hate them as much as we do.

It would be difficult to get the police involved, because most of the scams are commited by people who are not in this country.

This is what Jean Boutier sent me, when I enquired about that same studio in St Pancras. I wonder if he has actually managed to scam many people! Too good to be true obviously:

this is what you will do..get the first month rent plus security deposit sent to your friend or family via western union.i mean using your friend as the receiver of the payment..A receipt will be issued to you at the western union and there are some information on the receipt which you will have to provide to your friend before she can retrieve the money at western union. The thing is that,as soon as you make the transfer, you will have to scan the receipt and have it sent to me.This will be as proof for me and also i will call western union to confirm if you truly made the payment and i will provide them with the information on the receipt such as senders name, receivers name,MTCN and amount sent before they can confirm for me that you truly made the payment....As soon as i confirm that the payment is there...then i will leave cambridge for london to show you the apartment. after veiwing the apartment if you are okay with what you see then you and ur friend will both go to western union to cash the money and get it hand over to me.then i believe you can sign all neccessary paper and i will also give you the keys and issue a receipt for the payment but if you are not okay with what you see in the apartment then you will cash the money as well and walk away. you will have to pay some little charges at the western union for the transaction...i promise to refund it back to you at the point ng..i hope you understand the reason am using this method. i have attahed the energy bill ofc the apartment so as to show that the bills are well taken care of

N.B: you dont have to go there with your friend or who ever you want to send the money to cos western will advice you to give him or her the money at hand since the person is beside. i want you to understand that i just want this as a proof of your financial capability.. get the western union and tell them you want to send money to your friend or who ever you have choosen to send the money to. i must confirm the transaction before the receiver pick it up

I dont know why police cant do anything! I mean even if they are not in the country, theres Interpol and evertything. And if as many people complaining about WU, then why a higher "body" doesnt do anything. Just make these transfers a little bit more difficult. How can they pay out money to somebody without providing a valid ID?

I went to the garda, it's week-end time, they wont be able to do anything before Monday. But its really strange. Why they cant check those IP addresses, etc??

Could we do something together maybe????

WU should be also punished. I have fund a forum about WU and money disappears quite often even if you send a money to a family member and you don't give the code to anybody else!! They should take the responsibility, or asking for more details / ID. There's no authority who could control WU? Even if most of the people are complaining???

we're in the UK and they're in Nigeria what part of that don't you understand? The person who scammed you could have been anyone. All they need as proof for collecting the money is the mtcn number which is on top of the reciept that you sent as proof.WU won't have any record of who collected it and even if they do they won't tell you.You are wasting your time.If you went to the police they'll tell you the same. These type of scams are happening all the time. This web site is terrible for it.Kiss goodbye to your money for good.Hope you've learnt a lesson.Never send money thru WU.

maybe I'm wasting my time, but I'm going to fight and not only for myself. I have called WU on Firday morning (I'm pretty sure they can find the record of our conversation) and they assured me that they would DEFINITELY ask for an ID. In this case then, if this statement was not true then they are liar and I'm covered. I know its not that simple and it could be anyone, but as long as they have registered where I sent to money from and they even knew my ID number, date of birthday etc it's not my fault that they are not asking for same when picking up the money. And then what Interpol is for?

itsmeme have you ever been scammed? Can you pls tell me the outcome?

Why is it so complicated to check somebody's IP number???

To find the scammer is very easy, the problem is the police havent the time, or man power to do it.

Western Union in Nigeria requires only a MCTN number and a valid Govt ID. This could be a shoddy fake. The MCTN number is the key here - it's like a pin number to your account. Western Union say on their site never to send it someont you don't know, as their serice is not to be used in this way. The argument that they should have done something to protect people who misuse their service is the same as the argument that coffee cups should have "Warning, this coffee is hot" on them as someone sued after they burnt themselves.
