Does such a thing even exist? I thought there are people who go looking for parts for things etc at dumps or is that a thing of the past now.

Wondering if anyone knows of a dump in East Lothian, Midlothian or the Edinburgh area where people can freely wander around and search through the discarded rubbish for odd bits and pieces for free.

I keep two Chinchilla's and have a huge 8ft tall aviary I adapted for them. I want to improve on this though and get a large wooden enclosure for them. Not really the kind of thing you can buy though. I had looked into a custom build aviary which would cost me well over £1000 minimum. Even a good custom build would not give me exactly what I want, really only I could build what I envisage.

So I could put together something myself, and a lot of the bits and pieces I need could probably be found as scrap, this would be ideal in terms of recyclement, cost and satisfaction etc. I would need in addition to wood some mesh, door hinges, frames, wire trays and all sorts of bits and bobs

You did ask Smile

Plus I'd like one of those vibrators Thally is talking about.

What kind of stuff would you need? I would have thought timber and narrow gauge chicken wire? Didn't know you could keep 'em outside, isn't it too cold? I made an outdoor pen for my polecats when i was a kid, above materials plus that bendy metal ducting from a cooker outlet that looks like its off a space craft.

Ok, cool. Thanks for taking the time to explain. Chinchilla's are so cute, my neighbour has one, he's about 10.

I'm not sure what polecats are, are they a type of rodent or ferret-like (will certainly google that later).

I am not keeping or planning to keep the chinchillas outside, I like having them in my living room and interacting with them etc. Although they are from the Andes mountain range, and live at extremely high altitude in the wild, the problem is the blood line. Most keepers like myself have a bloodline that goes back 20-30 years in home environment, where they have become very tame and adapted well to a warmer home climate. It could probably be done if well thought out (have seen breeders who keep them in adapted sheds etc). Would not like to try it myself though.

What stuff do I need?... Well all I mentioned, and many bits and bobs, will need a metal/stainless steel type tray of appropriate size, and probably sliders for it, will need appropriate wheels I can attach to bottom. Will need all sorts of sizes and shape of wood even though I can manipulate wood is best to start with something close to what I need. Is important the wood is pine wood.

The one up the road from you is all containerised and you can't even SEE what's in them, let alone get at the stuff. Just been tonight handing in a fridge which because it is working and the cabinet is not dented or scratched, went into the Re-Use cabin. That's the only container that's open-ended.
You could ask the guys to look out for something you wanted and call regularly to see if they had it and give them a few quid for it (I expect).

how come pine wood? i suppose for cleaning you need to watch what you coat it with if anything... i think if you're flexible and creative you could probably fashion something pretty special out of old furniture and mesh.
The bloodline thing is interesting, i was thinking about it randomly today - over 30 yrs the genetics won't have changed at all so if you kept them outside from birth then they'd be fine, not that there is any reason to.
the polecats i was on about are actually ferrets which have been cross bred with polecats (not actually sure what they are!) and have black ring markings round the head, great pets if you handle them from birth and don't mind the smell Smile
be interesting to see what you come up with on the building front!

You are probably right re genetics and keeping chinchillas outside. From what I have read it is not recommended, and I don't know of anyone who has tried it, other than keeping them in a converted shed that isn't exposed to the weather. It possibly and probably could be done, I just wont be testing it out with my chinchillas Smile

Pine wood is what most chinchilla keepers use. You need to provide a lot of wood for chinchillas as they spend much of their day gnawing, which is vital to them as their teeth grow oversized and cause them health probs otherwise (ultimately death).

It isn't to bad to keep clean and usually just needs a sweep every few days - most of the chinchilla mess falls through a wire bottom into a droppings/litter tray at bottom of the aviary. The wood occasionally needs a wash and replaced now and again.

Have attached a pic of the aviary below to give you an idea. You will see all the shelves are made from pine wood as indeed is 95% of the contents including their chew toys. Problem with the aviary is it is bigger than it looks. It is taller than myself and I am 6ft but its got massively deceptive width you wont see from the pic. The cage can't leave the living room, or the house for that matter unless it is completely taken down and reconstructed.

We are planning on moving home in next year or two so makes sense to start preparing now, and at the same time we want to improve the home of our chinchillas for a nice furniture look but most importantly for the chinchillas themselves.

I will post a picture of the new home for my chinchillas when its finished (probably a few months away).

Looked up the polecats: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Polecat

They are similar to weasels but seem to have a of a ferret, meerkat type of appearance, I do have to say very cute!
