I responded to this same fake post just under a fortnight ago. (Bistalan@yahoo)
Only this time he posted about a flat on the Albert Embankment.
To be honest I was suspicious as soon as I read his email, which read exactly the same as the ones some of you have posted...My suspicions only grew when I passed on my number and offered as an alternative that he pass on his number. The response email I got completely ducked my request . He grew ever persistent that I send this money over to Moneygram. At first, I thought this would be fine, as I wouldnt be paying him the cash until we had 'met'. But I now realise that he asks for you to scan him in the receipt after you've paid it into your friends account, so he can copy the details and fashion himself some form of fake i.d to retrieve it.
Luckily I cottoned on in time and decided to Google his email address, which led me straight to this forum.
People like this make me so mad. But I agree with one of the earlier posters on here. I dont blame Gumtree entirely, it's easy to do that. This is what the internet is all about, its a public forum, so inevitably you will get con artists trying their luck. There's no debating that they are c*nts and should be locked up.
But from now on I'll be researching (and it really is as easy as typing a name into Google) and as said before; if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.
Take special care everyone. And trust your instincts. |

thanks to the forum I have avoided this scam, though I knew in my heart it was too good to be true and that I think is what we have to remember.
http://cambridge.gumtree.com/cambridge/72/22464672.html
I don't know exactly how it works, but I'm guessing the scanned copy is produced at another WU office. I have replied to the email below offering a copy of a bankers draft as security and requesting registration details of the vehicle 'for sale' .....it will be interesting what response I get.
I always use peoples first names if possible and sign off with my first name but these guys are too busy to attend to these details... let it be a warning folks!
"Hi ,
Recently I got the opportunity to open a franchise in Pretoria(South Africa) with a partner, so I had to move here for few months.
I have decided to sell the car back in Mansfield, because it will cost me to much to ship and register it here in Pretoria. With the money I will get from selling it, I can easily buy a car here in South Africa without spending extra on shipping, registration and other fees.
I had a interested buyer 9 days ago who said he will buy the car if I come back to UK to ship it, so i got a plane ticket to UK, and guess what? When i arrived there, he didn't show up and after 2 days he gave me a call and said that he is sorry but he cant buy it anymore because his loan was rejected by the bank!
Now I don't want to buy another plane ticket to come and fall for it once more, maybe you wont show up.
So this is what I suggest,I think this is the best and safest way for the two of us.
You must find the nearest Western Union agency and you will go there with a relative, best friend, someone you trust.
Her comes the best part: your friend or relative will be the Sender and you will be the Receiver in UK.
This way you will have total control of your money, since you are the Receiver you are the only one that can pick them up!
I will be 100 % sure that you are a serious buyer, and that you will be in UK. because once the money is sent to you, you have to be in UK to pick them up.
Once you show me a photo or a scan copy of the receipt from Western Union in the amount of 6,500 pounds in your name, i will fly back home and meet with you and make the deal in person, then you will pick up the money from Western Union and pay me cash in hand.
Or, if you are busy or for some reason wont be available to pick up the car from my place, then i can come with my car and you will try it and transfer all the papers in your name.I will pay the transport fee and you pay the Western Union fee.
If you understand and agree with my terms please reply." |

Accept it as a rather expensive lesson in the value of research and common sence. |

This is what I recieved:
Thanks for your fast response but i must tell you that i permanently Live and Work in South York, If I have to arrange a viewing for you, I would have to travel all the way from South York for the viewing, I am sure you realize that this is quite a distance for me. I have been deeply disappointed in the past. I have travelled
all the way from South York, (had to leave my Job, and take my time to come over) Only to be told by the person I am coming to meet that he can not afford the Security Deposit and 1st Month Rent and he wants me to let Him stay at my property for 1Month before he would be able to pay, some of them do not even have the Security Deposit. Some of them would not even turn out for the viewing, Most of them sent me Fake Bank Statements and Landlord Reference Letters even Fake Bank Reference Letters just to deceive me to come down from York. You can only imagine how irritating and annoying this can be.I would be need to verify that you are capable of renting my Property before coming over for the viewing, I would NOT need to see the following: BANKREFERENCE, STATEMENT OF BANK ACCOUNT, REFERENCE LETTER FROM PREVIOUS LANDLORD OR PAYSLIP. For now but I would need it during the renting process You would need to Locate a Western Union Outlet, make a transfer of the Security Deposit and 1 Month Rent to your friend, family member or partner then get back to me with the Western Union receipt that you would be issued. I would run the Receipt for a Proper verification that the Transfer (Transaction) Occurred and if I have been able to confirm that the transaction occurred, I would give you a call to arrange the a Day and Time for the viewing I just have to be sure that you are capable of renting my property and that you are a responsible Tenant.
The Western Union Charges would be refunded to you in cash or deducted from the Monthly rent (If you are renting my property).
I backed out when I couldn't find the house! and having just reading the other messages, what a relief I did was to good to be true! |

How exactly can there be any "legal action"? I don't understand what you mean. THe only legal action I could see would be prosicution of the criminal - and that is technically difficult, and thus unlikely in the extreme. |

I received this:
Hi,
I work in a hospital and is very hard for me to come in UK. I can't take the risk to leave my new job for days and when I arrive in UK to see that I come for nothing. I want to be 100% sure that when I will meet you, we do the rent papers then i can come back in Italy.
So i can be sure of that look how we can do:
You make the payment from your name and address to your best friend name and address in UK using MoneyGram for 2 months rent that means 1120 GBP and send me the scanned receipt. As soon as I see the scanned receipt that you have made the payment, I will come in UK and you will see the flat and maybe rent it. After that, we will go together at the MoneyGram office and you will take the money back and pay me.So all you have to do is to find a MoneyGram office and wire 1120 GBP from your name to your friend name and send the scanned receipt.I am asking you this to be sure that I do not come in UK for nothing. I hope you understand.
P.S : As I told you,I have a lot of customers interested to rent the apartment. I will reserve the apartment to the first one that provides me the scanned paper from MoneyGram. As soon as I have the confirmation from MoneyGram that the money are available on his name I stop the transactions with all the other customers !

Thanks to everyone for making noise about these scams - needless to say I haven't bothered responding... |

Me and my girlfriend very nearly got caught out on this one. We were even close to getting out a loan, so it would've cost us more than the £900 he asked for.
This one was from 'Andy Williams'

Hi,
My name is Andy Williams and I have the flat for rent. The rent is 450£ per month including all bills and the concil tax. I moved in Venice, Italy because I got a new job. I work in a hospital. You can rent the flat as long as you need to stay even for 2 or 3 years. The first payment will be for 2 months(900£).In case you want it, let me know so we can arrange the transaction. I am not sure if I was almost scammed however this was very fishy as firstly he said that he left Cardiff 5 days ago and he lives in Scotland. Secondly he needed the money (£100.00) to pay for the transportation of the birds to me however when I said that I needed him to send me the confirmation of how he wants the money paid the details he provided was as he says for his wife in CAMEROUN and lastly when I spoke to him on the telephone he definately did not have a scottish accent.
Can someone possibly assist me in letting me know where I can find more out about these 070... telephone numbers - I am concerned about the cost of the call I made to him

Hi,

You can rent the flat as long as you need to stay even for 2 or 3 years. The first payment will be for 2 months(1080£).In case you want it, let me know so we can arrange the transaction. For me it is very hard to come in UK. If I will come in UK to show you the flat anytime you want I have to be sure you are genuinely looking for a flat.As you can see in the photos everything was newly decorated and it is a fully furnished flat

Hi everyone,
I can't believe how many people have been affected by this scam. I have lost 500 pounds last friday. My name was a a receiver but somehow this scam people cashed the money out. I'm not even in London! I dont' know how did they do it & the moneygram refused to give any information as to how & when & what id the person used when they received the money. My best friend in London was a sender. I was looking for a flat in london & this person who claimed to own a flat in knightsbridge asking me to send moneygram to my friend to prove funds but I've shown him my bank statement prior to that & he said his lawyer said it wasn't sufficient. It has to be moneygram only. At that time , I had so many replied to my ad, all asking for moneygram so I thought it was normal because I thought they can't cash the money out anyway if it's not in their name so my friend did send it to my name and on the day my friend supposed to meet with him to sign the lease, he disappear and yesterday we've found out that he had cashed the money on that day. He sent me his copy of passport, draft lease & photos of the flat which they are probably fake as well. I've asked my friend to contact the police but they said they can't do much without confirm in writing from moneygram about the receiver details which moneygram refused to do so. I don't know what else to do. If anyone going ahead with legal action, please count me in. Thanks |

this scammer is back:
http://www.gumtree.com/london/28/25777028.html
Now, when i saw this i thought it was a bit too good a be true... especially when the description is identical to a 1.25million pound flat on the knight frank website... and with the same photos... http://www.knightfrank.co.uk/RS1050588
Apart from 930/month is a bit cheap.
So, i emailed him asking if i could rent the flat and was told...
| Quote: | Hello,
My name is Danny Brandon and the post is still avaible. The rent per month is 920 GBP including all bills and the concil tax. I decide to rent the flat to a serious family or to a serious person because like you can see on the pictures the flat is very well maintained and is fully furnished. The flat have internet connection, phone, washing machine with dryer, cable TV and most important parking place. The min period to rent the flat is 3 months. I can offer to rent the flat for a period of 2-3 years because i work in Field Army and i have a contract for 3 years and now i am here in Iraq. I tryed to rent the flat one month ago but the person that i spoke about renting was not a serious person and after we set our meeting in London that person not coming and made me to buy the flight ticket to come in London for nothing. If you really like the flat and you want to rent it i will need small guarantee for me , you dont need to send me money.
If you are still interested i will wait your e-mail. |
So... i asked him what the guarantee was... and i got told:
| Quote: |
Hello again,
Thank for your e-mail. Like i told you before i am in Field Army in Iraq and is very difficult for me to come in the Uk, London without any quarantee because in the past i had a bad experience. So my propouse is:
You must find a Western Union or Money Gram office and make a transfer using one of that services. For you can make the transfer you need a friend or a person from your family and you must go to an Western Union or Money Gram office and send the 1 month rent 920 GBP from your name and address to one of your friend name and address there in Uk, or your friend can send the money from his name and address to your name and address there in UK for me is the same who is the receiver or the sender, i only want to be sure that you have the money for min 1 month 920 GBP. After the transfer is complete i will need from you the scanned receipt in order to see if you have the money and convince that i will not come for nothing from Iraq to London. I hope you can understand my opinion because is very hard for me to have a permision.
After i will see the scanned receipt i will call to the Western Union or Money Gram to be sure that the money are there, and after that i will buy the flight ticket, i will scann it and i will send to you by e-mail to see that i am serious person and i will be there in London to meet you.
After we will meet , we will go to the flat , we will sign all the papers and after that we will go togheter in Western Union or Money Gram office to pick up the money and i will pay you the comission that you payd to make the transfer.
If you are agree with my propouse i will wait your e-mail with the scanned receipt from one of the services Western Union or Money Gram and i will be in max 48 houres in London.
P.S : As I told you,I have a lot of customers interested to rent the apartment. I will reserve the apartment to the first one that provides me the scanned paper from MoneyGram. As soon as I have the confirmation from MoneyGram that the money are available on his name I stop the transactions with all the other customers !
Thank you for understanding !

Not going to happen, sorry.
Money-Gram, like Western Union, is simply a transfer company. The money is gone. |

Hi Dalila,
I realised this morning that I have been scammed by this moneygram transfer.
I have lost 1400 pounds trying to prove my ability to pay a house rent.
I am by all means ready to support any joint action against moneygram.
They told me that the moneygram is not responsible for people who pretend with fake ID's and take money.
Anyboody who has been able to get their money back, please post.
Does anyone have any contact numbers for any regulatory board regulating moineygram transfers, please post.
