Can anyone tell me if there are aware of any government grants, or local councils that offer grants to encourage you to be greener at home.
I recently got 2 boxes of energy saving light bulbs from Scottish Gas. That was great and all but unfortunately my home is entirely screw light bulb fitted. Is there a grant available in the UK to purchase energy saving bulbs?
How about fitting solar panels, or collecting rain water, is anyone clued up on what support and funding you can get with this? |

solar voltiac panels cost a small fortune even with grants but solar thermal panels are cheap if you make them yourself,although doing it that way you fall foul of the local council who usually expect you to use an installer of there choice. green energy is at the moment a rip-off unless you can manufacturer most of it yourself,rooftop wind generators are a joke install a 1kw type from B&Q and you would be lucky if you got 200 watts. also those bulbs you have send them back and ask for screw in versions as they are available.
they quote a life of 10000 hours but thats based on 3 hours use a day,which they dont tell you.
and they contain mercury which is poisoness, ultra bright leds are better and use much less power. also using solar panels to supply power you need an invertor, and an efficient regulator system which bumps up the cost even more. |

i had a look on there and found this

Warmfront have grants for energy saving, but that's more to do with insulation and upvc windows and condensing combi's.
Just a thought, why not consider using your own lighting less, wearing a jumper indoors to cut your fuel bills and investing in some thicker curtains to keep the draft out......  |

I am using lighting less, and some of my lights now use energy saving light bulbs. We have many dimmer lights and lamps, which are not practical for most if not all energy saving bulbs, but I plan to have about 75% of our lights on energy saving bulbs eventually.
also wearing my warm jumpers when cold and we will close the windows and vents if its windy or cold outside.
a couple of other minor things spring to mind, I am only filling the kettle with as much water as I require and the chinchillas are recycling our cardboard tubes from kitchen/toilet roll by chewing it (doesn't save money but is green at least).
Well I know I could be doing a lot more environmentally and economicaly in terms of bills, but I feel aware and want to do more and its a start  |

I think most of us are like minded and want to our bit. We all try in every little way we can, but it can seem like a drop in the ocean when you have places like America who have little concern for the greener issues (unless, of course it has something to do with the colour of money).
Sounds like you are heading in the right direction though Shirtie, top marks for effort..  |

nope generator is converted three phase induction motor being driven by what some backward thinking people say is impossible. |
