|
|
My Wife and I are going to UK around May, 2006 for a 1 - 2 year working holiday. I'm in IT, she's in Healthcare. We are from Sydney.
At the mo, we are thinking London as this is where there are most IT jobs but I was told I could virtually go to any main city across to UK even Midlands (as there is a good airport there and it's pretty convenient) but also hear good things about south east and beachy areas such as Brighton (but i expect that staying here would mean extra travel time to get to a good location to get off to Europe)
Can someone tell me what the pro's and con's (travel vs salaries vs convience vs atmosphere etc...) of the main parts of the UK and where would be best recommended place to stay if I wanted to go and "do europe"... again me thinking London is the best place to hop onto planes with cheap airfares or trains with cheap train tickets but I am open to other ideas.... |

hey there. First - if you expect beechy place don't go to Brighton!
also a train from Brighton to London takes about 2 hours and about 1.30min to Gatwick so the connection is not that bad.
But London is a better place to start - in my opinion |

| Thames Valley areas just outside the M25 - most big IT companies have offices based around this area. |

Hi, funny to meet a couple from Sydney looking for a job here 'cos I was thinking of working in Sydney.
Okay here's my 5 cents worth and I hope it helps. Places to work outside London are; Dublin - check out 'Google' they are employing and their ads aren't bad - very descriptive. Dublin prices for housing are about 5% less than London. Better to share house with someone in early days. Apart from that Dublin is a LOVELY city and with it being the hub of Ryanair, you get to fly to places ALL OVER EUROPE for practically nothing.
Now I've a question for you. I'd like to work in Sydney but am worried of getting chucked out by immigration once they find out. Any way to work as an IT contractor? How do I find out more? What are living costs? Would be glad for any information from you. Reply to: jamucko55@netscape.net |

I reckon Cornwall is a good place to be in IT, beaches and surf everywhere, and cornwall has a shortage of healthcare workers. The pay isn't as good as it is in London but I moved down here and I LOVE IT.
So chilled out, beautiful, good airports, decent trains to London and excellent facilities for sports too. |

| my opinion is come to london. you're only going to be here for a limited time (1 - 2 years) so make the most of your time by earning a better salary in london. this will enable you to afford to do more travelling than if you were living in another area and earning a much smaller salary. |

Bath or Bristol would be a good option, you'd have access to IT jobs (not as high paid as London though). Bristol has an airport that has cheap flights to Europe with easyjet. You'd be 2.5 hours from London, between 1 and 3 hours from beautiful surf beaches in South Wales, Devon and Cornwall and the surrounding countryside is great. Both Bath and Bristol have great cultures and diverse social life opportunities.
Actually I am now wondering why I haven't moved back that way myself yet! |
