Hi,
I have recently moved to Guildford and am in search of a good hair dresser for someone with curly hair. I've had hair dressers before who are good with straight hair but then just don't do curly hair justice.
Any help/ suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Claire |

Hi Claire,
I own and run a hair salon in Notting Hill, Might be near to Guildford in Curly Hairdresser terms, I have people travel from all over the place to visit me because I am written about all over the web for being good with curls.
I have to admit that this is a fairly recent twist to my 14 years in the business, just in the last 3 years I have picked up this rep for what I do with curly hair. I dread to think what I was doing to peoples curls before it suddenly clicked a few years back.
Basically most hair stylists think it is cut the same as straight hair often wanting to dry it straight first, which is wrong and probably down to several things. When I did my training like most other hair dressers not a single day in three years was dedicated to understanding curls differently to straight.
The other thing that is assumed by stylists is that it is easy because you can't see the mistakes. Which is half true but that attitude leads to all sorts of corners being cut and a general disregard for the overall importance of a good shape that lasts. Futhermore the advice that comes with hairdressers supporting this attitude tends to be pretty awful, and like you'd listen seeing as most cant even get a good finish once they have cut curly hair.
I had very curly hair until I lost it all. I understand the difficulty getting a good cut. I'd like to think I can help. My family have curly hair and a Ex had me stressed out with her curly hair everyday for two+ years. B*tch!
Check out my reviews online, try Urban Path and look up Unruly Studio. Also Naturally Curly.com has a section to help you find a good salon near you. It is geared towards people in the US but you can find some in London, I think there is even a Curly Salon in Southwest London that is supposed to be good.
Good Luck
Michael
PS. If you have not already, get your hands on a copy of Curly Girl. Very American but some very worthy points to help you get through life with curly hair. |

Hi,
I too, have wild and curly hair and have far too much of it to faff about trying to style. Instead I have a fantastic hairdresser who has looked after my hair for over 20 years. He knows I'm lazy and my hair will be left to do it's own thing and so he cuts it in such a way that it always looks good. He definately knows his stuff, I can just wash my hair, stuff it up in a top knot (any old way), go to bed with it wet and then just shake it out in the morning and I'm ready to start my day. No frizz, just smooth soft curls and no tongs or hairdryer required, in fact, I haven't used a drier for years.
The guy's name is Fraser
The salon is called "Tartan"
The salon can be found at Walton on the hill and is just down the road from you.
Good luck,
Helen |

Hi. I've had great luck in London getting my hair cut with Stephanie, a stylist at J Hair (54 Warren St). Stephanie has naturally curly hair herself (always a good sign - although recently she's taken to cutting it so short it looks kind of straight) and had her own studio in Bulgaria for 18 years before coming to London. I like Stephanie because she's one of the only stylists I've ever had who understands the principle of cutting 3 inches of curly hair when wet = hair that suddenly looks about a foot shorter when it's dry, and actually listens when I say I want to keep my length. She gives me a genuinely good cut - Stephanie doesn't just rely on dumping tons of product on your head to keep things under control, as non-experienced with curly hair stylists tend to do. With my hair she did a good job tidying up the shape of the hair at the back of my head so it can move nicely.
J Hair itself isn't the poshest salon in the world, but it's clean and professional and centrally-located, and cuts are about £35 (less if your hair is shorter than mine). If you want a deep conditioning treatment, which I always find useful for my curly hair 'cause it dries so fast, those are £8 - £10 at J Hair. Mention my name (Margaret) when you book an appointment with Stephanie and she'll give you 20% off your first cut. Oh - and if you happen to be a student, J Hair always gives s 10% discount to them. |

I'm a newbie here. So hello to everybody.
I'm wondering if any of you know a hairdresser who is good with curly hair around Sheffield or Manchester areas. I'm desperate for a hair cut, but very scared to visit hair salons due to bad past experiences. I read what you guys are talking about the salons in London. But it would be a bit difficult and expensive for me to come to London to have a hair cut.
So does anyone know any curly hair stylist in Sheffield or Manchester? |

I have thick, long, red curly, frizzy, breakage, hair that is suppossed to be curly and bouncy.
As I haven't had a decent cut and style in 2 years I am in desperate need of a cut that also would not cost me an arm and leg and take a few hours to do.
The hairdresser I had gone to for a long time raised her prices to unaffordable for me. The last place they only know straight and boring like everyone else is wearing style.
I ended up walking out.
Am desperate
Thank you in advance for anyand all help. |
