Ok to keep Gumtree simple, cut out the login procedure, right, check.

To keep Gumtree free of posters offering scam products over and over, bring in the login procedure.

Actually I've a fantastic idea..

How about a COMMENT BOX underneath each item advertised.. Along with a verification box too, as this is the norm now lol.

If I could leave a comment underneath the FREE XBOX 360 ad, telling others it's a scam, then surely that would let others know beforehand.. Any questions about the item could be posted too. Rather than isolating the questioning to emails only - which is the source of all scams.

Flawed ideas.. Maybe.. But it would make my browsing experience here alot more smoother.. And I spend half my life searching for ads..

Thanks for your suggestions Fluidz. You have hit upon the often direct conflict between keeping the site simple and easy to use for everyone while preventing issues like fraud, spam etc

A feedback system isn't so ideal for a site without registered users, a site where users aren't all trading regularly - e.g. a private landlord will only rent out his flat at most once a year, and also a site where the actual "transaction" and, therefore proof of the transaction, happens offline, face to face.

What you describe about users adding comments to ads to highlight if they are "bad" is an interesting one but we would rather users reported those ads to us using the "report an ad" button so we can take a look and remove them altogether rather than leave them on the site.

Let us know if you think of any other ideas. It's really helpful for us to hear what our users would like to see tried.

hiya twiggy....i had reported scam/illegal/porno all the time...an yet nothing is ever done about them....i've looked hours later...an they are still live...tell a lie..i did complain about illegal tobbaco lots of times...an they took that one down...i thought the adds got checked before they went live.....dont try to tell me they are checked...cause they are not...well not in my area...why dont you get more admins to check the adds..who are fair and know the rules.....if you look on the feedback section...you'll see that just about everybody say the site is out of control with spam/illegal/porno adds...deputise some admins an get the site back where it belongs...a great site..i for one would offer my time free to gumtree...im on it most of the day and could do a better and fairer job thats done on the dundee section
