example of a scam

Hi,
I am giving this flat away just because no one is making use of the house at the moment and I hate to see it dirty and untidy every time. It's better for me to let it out to someone who will make it clean and tidy,I hope you understand this.
Is very hard for me to come in UK. I can't take the risk to leave my new job for days and when I arrive in UK to see that I come for nothing. I want to be 100% sure that when I will meet you, we do the rent papers then i can come back in Germany. So i can be sure of that look how we can do:
You make the payment from your name and address to your best friend name and address in UK using MoneyGram for 2 months rent that means 1330£ and send me the scanned receipt. As soon as I see the scanned receipt that you have made the payment, I will come in UK and you will see the flat and maybe rent it. After that, we will go together at the MoneyGram office and you will take the money back and pay me.So all you have to do is to find a MoneyGram office and wire 1330£ from your name to your friend name and send the scanned receipt.I am asking you this to be sure that I do not come in UK for nothing. I hope you understand.
P.S : As I told you,I have a lot of customers interested to rent the apartment. I will reserve the apartment to the first one that provides me the scanned paper from MoneyGram. As soon as I have the confirmation from MoneyGram that the money are available on his name I stop the transactions with all the other customers !

Hi, beware of another version of this scam running at the moment with sports tickets (particularly the upcoming rugby tour in November), I responded to an ad about 4 All Blacks vs England tickets (block L1, Row Cool from: marlonpeters27@yahoo.com

After responding to the original email, I was sent a "ebay/gumtree" invoice requesting payment through moneygram. After some researh, the supposed ebay representative address turned out to be a hotel (thanks to google). I never sent the money as recognised as a scam, but really just to warn others.

Hello,
Total price for 2 Tix will be 150 GBP
4 Tix will be 300 GBP

The tickets are located Side by Side Block L1, Row 8. I am from London but I am currently in Glasgow with some
business and I will be back home in two months, that's why I suggest to use
eBay Direct Payment since (Gumtree) was recently
bought by eBay we will have 100 % protection. I will ship via UPS overnight and
the tickets will arrive in 24 h

I will need your full name and shipping address so i can
contact eBay and let them know about this purchase. They will then
contact you with payment
and shipping details.Let me know if this is ok with you.
I wait your reply
Regards

After this you are then sent a phony invoice with instructions to pay cash via moneygram

I too have been contacted by the person trying to get a Western Union Transfer for a flat, without revealing the location etc. He used the number 7031953644. If you Google that number, you get this thread and a thread on a Spanish forum where very little of his wording is changed, for example: "It has very fast internet connection which you will like". If you receive an email from willson.gary138@gmail.com, delete it.

Another email address to beware of!!!!

From: Larry Ardees [mailto:ardeeslar63@googlemail.com]

This person posted a ad on gumtree for a new refurbished 2 bed on Curzon St, London.
I replied to show interest, he said he was in a wheelchair and resides in Scotland and would only make the ardeous journey down with his solicitor if there is genuine interest -also that his solictor advised him to get proof of genuine intent from potenials tennants in from of valid receipt of MoneyGram transfer of GBP1000 to a trusted person belonging to the tennant. (not to himself).

Not entirely sure why, but I believe maybe through some method he can access the funds with a valid MoneyGram ref???

Regardless, the address of the property he gave me was 37, Curzon Street London. W1J 7TX. This turns out to be a restaurant!!!

What a joke! Evil or Very Mad

I reckon this is the same scammer who is trying to scam me with buying a camper van.

his email, with phoney name is craigessmith@yahoo.co.uk

You can tell by the way he writes and the phrases he uses that it is the same person. the van is listed on many sites and is way under its real value.

this is one of the adverts...

http://www.ukclassifieds.co.uk/volkswagen_t25_camper_van_1984-o681727.html

This is one of his emails...

Dear Sir I understand you but please understand me now I have many buyers interested to buy the camper and can not risk to stay with him not sold. I want to sell the camper imediatly for a verry good price. You must to put the money for my trust that you have money and you want to buy now the camper. You will pay maximum £50 the taxes for the money transfer and you will put £1.450 for the camper. You will go at MoneyGram office with £1.500 cash and put the money on the name of your friend in UK not directly on my name and after when the payment is made you will send me the scanned paper from MoneyGram. After I see that you make the money I will call at the shipping company and in maximum 2 days you will receive the camper at your home adress. Is the best deal for both you will receive the camper first and after 5 days in which you can decide if the camper remain at you, you will go again at MoneyGram office and will transfer the money on my name. You not want to buy now the camper at a verry good price and finish a good deal? Now I am not in UK and after you will receive the camper you will must to transfer the money at me, now I am in Spain at my parents and I need the money here after you will receive the camper. You trust in me the camper has no problem is as you see it in the pictures I am a seriouse seller and you will be satisfied with the camper. Not a problem if you do not like the camper or is a problem you will go back at MoneyGram and pick up your money back and I will pay all taxes at the shipping company and I will send your money back £50 for the taxes for your money transfer.

This is my phone number 0034625297561 but I do not speak good English.

Tell me if you are agree with this deal or not because I have other buyers who want the camper.

I wait your email back soon with your decision.

Thank you again for understand.
Craig

iTS MORE LIKELY TO BE A FAKE CHEQUE I WOULD FORSTALL THE ISSUE AND INFORM THE BANK COS YOU DONT WANT THEM INFORMING THE POLICE THAT YOU ARE PASSING HOOKEY CHEQUES

IT APPEARS ON YOU BALANCE QUITE QUICKLY BUT AFTER A FEW DAYS WILL BOUNCE BY WHICH TIME YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE SENT HIM THE MONEY

BBulmer - You should have taken Montyzuma's advice and gone to the bank FIRST with your suspicions! You should have told them you were worried and that they should investigate it BEFORE crediting funds to your account. That way you are seen as 'clean'.

The moral of the story (besides not banking a hooky cheque) is NOT to take Police advice about what the Bank might do. They are not bankers and were just trying to get off the line.

As far as the Bank is now concerned, you passed a dud cheque. You had suspicions about it that you posted on the Internet but still didn't tell the bank about your worries but just waited to see if it would clear.

In the Banks eyes this makes you appear complicit and at least worthy of investigation. You should have told them FIRST that you thought something was amiss and that they might like to investigate the cheque themselves before crediting funds to your account.

This advice goes for everyone else out there with a suspicion about a cheque they've received, especially if it is for more than the asking amount. (Google 'cheque overpayment' or take a look at http://www.netcred.co.uk/security/overpayment-or-advance-payment-scam.html )

Please see below for a scam email I received today:

subjectRe: Your Gumtree.com ad #43467268: 1 bedroom flat to rent in Dean Ryle Street
mailed-bygooglemail.com

Hi,

Like i told you in my previous e-mail i had to move with my job in Ireland and is very hard for me to come back in UK. I can't take the risk to leave my new job for few days and when I arrive in UK to see that I came for nothing. I want to be 100% sure that when I will meet you, we do the rent papers then i can come back in Ireland.

So i can be sure of that let me explain how we can do:

Please make the payment from your name and address to your best friend name and address(or maybe your brother name- a trust person) from United Kingdom using MoneyGram Service for 2 months rent that means 1200 £ and send me the scanned receipt. As soon as I see the scanned receipt that you have made the payment, I will come back in UK and i will show you the apartment!
After that, we will go together at the MoneyGram office and you will take the money back and pay me but only after you sign the contract. So all you have to do is to find a MoneyGram office and wire 1200 £ from your name to your friend's name and send me the scanned receipt( so i can check if the money are available or not?!).

I am asking you this to be sure that I do not come back in UK for nothing again(like i did last week).

When you will go to the MoneyGram Office to wire the money sometimes the agent ask you what is the reason that you would like to send the money?! If you tell him that you make the payment for rent a flat or maybe to close a transaction they will charge you a high transfer fee. If you tell to the agent that you send the money to your best friend name or your maybe your brother name, you will pay a small transfer fee. MoneyGram percept small fees for family transactions. I just want to help you yo save some money.

Anyway, you don't have to worry about the transfer fee because i will reimburs all fees to you when i meet you!

You must understand correctly the situation. You don't need to send me any money, only prove that you have the money until the day you want to see the apartment and keep it for yourself;this is my warranty.

I expect your decision about this if you want to rent my flat because i have more people interested in renting this apartment.
Thank you for your time ![/i]

Has anyone been contacted by phone? I think I've been talking to a scammer but then again would they make themselves vulnerable like this by revealing their phone number? It's a mobile number. It's a really attractive deal on a house and he won't give the exact address...
