I was informed a while back that in order to gain a project management/support job, you need to gain PRINCE2 certificate, now I've done that as well as invested my hard earned savings in gaining my ITIL certificates also,, but am struggling to get a project support/management job and am running out of ideas.....Please help .....
I have had vast IT background but am looking to move to a PM role, however am prepared to accept a project support /coordinator position in order to get a step into the company,,, but somehow I can't get any interviews,, now it is faustrating as would like to be given an opportunity & the fact I invested my time & money into these certifications but have so far, got me nowhere.... If anyone know anywhere recruiting then please let me know as would be especially like to get into online media sector, but not fussed,, I am currently in mcr city center..... thx. |

Welcome to the recession.
I was made redundant in February and like lots of others applied for hunderds of jobs with no success. Going for unskilled jobs and finding out another 100 people applied for it.
There are alot of of courses out there wanting your money, but even if you do the course and pass, a guaranteed job is not included. These training centres are the ones making the money at the moment. As I recall on the news its going to take another 2 years before jobs pick up.
But saying that, don't give up there are plenty of others in the same boat. I've managed to get a management job starting in November which is paying NMW, woo Hoo!! At least I will be in full time work again and have more exp to put on my CV so I can move on when the jobs do pick up. |

To most of us who have worked its National Minimal Wage. May be the lack of work exp you have is also the problem. |

Are you targetting your applications specifically to Trainee or Junior PM positions, particularly ones on types of roles that fit in with your IT back, such as infrastructure or web or whatever your strengths are (since though you have the certs you dont appear to have demonstrable PM experience and can't prove that you've delivered substantial pieces of work)?
Are there any roles available in your previous skillset which are looking for a manager so you can apply to work at a higher level than before, hopefully in a role where there will be a big new initiative for you to manage?
I agree with the previous poster re: effect of the recession. I know many experienced people in IT with professional qualifications who cannot get positions so it must be very hard for those with newly gained certs to get a look in.
By narrowing your focus to a single city and a single small IT subset (online media) you invariably narrow your chances in getting a role. Why don't you try and bag a 6 month junior contract somewhere else to boost your CV for future roles? |

I agree, get some experience in a lower position in the field you want to work in. Companies are more cautiious who they employ with the current climate. Its a greater risk to employ someone with no experince of the role and industy especially at management level.
At the moment its an employers market, there plenty of very experienced people out there who you are competing with. I started right from the bottom in my industry and have worked 7 years experience in it doing different roles. |
