Hi all after nearly by had by one of these SCAMS here on gumtree I am not going to sand back and take it. I will be looking and reporting any further suspicious ads in future.

one comeing across a potential scam hee on gumtree I would suggest

1- report the ad to gumtree immediately ( you can do this by clicking the report ad button on the right hand side of the ad above the map.

2- contact your local police and report it them giving as much info as you can including any email address s used, conact numbers given , namesand which city you saw the ad on.

3- also take a look at neighbouring gumtree citys and if you see them on there to give this info to gumtree t when you report the ad to let them know the ad could be across the gumtree community.

4- ad most of all always try to post the scam here on the forum so other people are aware of it .

we wont s7stop these scams but we can certainly make more people aware of them and reduce the number of people scammed.

NEVER TRANSFER MONEY INTO SOMEONES ACCOUNT
ALWAYS TRADE FACE TO FACE IN YOUR LOCAL AREA, AND NEVER GO ALONE.
E CARFUL NOT TO GIVE OUT ANY INFOFRMATION ABOUT YOURSELF I SHOULD THINK AN EMAIL ADDRESS OR CONTACT NUMBER IS MORE THAN ENOUGH.

thanks for reading

End of conversation right here !!!!

Police will ONLY act (ha ha ha ha if that is what they call it) when you have been scammed

3- also take a look at neighbouring gumtree citys and if you see them on there to give this info to gumtree t when you report the ad to let them know the ad could be across the gumtree community.

Do you have the time to do this ? I know I dont

4- ad most of all always try to post the scam here on the forum so other people are aware of it .

Yeah, can live with this idea

Lets be fair Steve, if anyone is stupid enough to fall for these, despite the site being plastered with warnings, then they deserve everything they get for being so bloody stupid. No doubt after someone else falls for the scams they will just end up slagging off poor Montyzuma and the Gumtree Admin team because they cannot comprehend the idea behing FACE TO FACE trading.

If someone is pressuring you into paying money before you look at anything, walk away from it - bloody simple really

Not everyone is internet savy though . Just by doing google searches you find plenty who have fallen for scams of various types on thezse types of sites worldwide .

The only ones i have no pitty for are the silly billys , i found 1 usa guy that had been hit by the pet scam 3 times , once you can maybe understand but 3 times ???

Also those that fall for the monkey scam seem foolish . They always seem to be people that have no experience of monkey care or handling monkeys , they also think the scammers claims of the monkey arriving from Cameroon in 9 hours is true , have people not heard of quarantine ?

I got my dog from a gumtree add , he did not arrive from Cameroon or Nigeria though lol .

Then maybe, just maybe, they should NOT be looking on the internet. It's a bit like giving a driving license to someone who has not passed a driving test - dangerous !!!!

Saying that, these scams do appear to be working - I could do with making some extra money:

For Sale

By the grace of god, I am seeling 2 of (PARROTS) that I have taking from the jungles and reared to be as my own. I am not asking for any monies, as god wont let me, for the (PARROTS) but to ask for a donation to god and my church. Please send me £500, only Via Western Union (did you know Western Union is the safest way to scam money from people, I mean recieve money from thick idiots who deserve to lose the money for being numpties)

Please be assuredes this is not a scam, by the grace of god, but please send monies to:

Nathaniel Umgawa
c'o 419 Scam Street
Cameroon.

Please - god will see me and guiide me to send the (PARROTS) to your home address via Glasgow Airport

Thanks

Olly , unfortunately NOT EVRYONE IS COMPUTER SAVVY and sites like gumtree SHOULD be trying to protect their customers. not EVERYONE IS a gumtree forum user and there fore are unaware of these scams.

All the above info I was advised to post by the police when they responded to my call. As I said the police are looking into these scam matters. And will be contacting gumtree about them.

Maybe gumtree would be better off with out the for sale sections, as this is where a lot of their bad feed back comes from.

OH AND I HOPE THAT ONE DAY YOU get scammed wheather it be by net letter or phone and then maybe you wont be so clever with your posts and sayin ppl who are not internet savvy , should not use the internet.

and another thing the amount of ppl who have emailed me about different scams on this site , is crazy .... seems that the majority of gumtree ads are scams... which says a lot about the site.

with many years of running now you would have thought they would have put something into practice, to at least reduce the number of scam ads.

maybe a good site for someone to setup would be gumtreescams.com

hi swansea

there are warnings all over the site
but you can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink

given that gumtree was started as a free advertising site for the local community, if the for sale sections are shut down what is left?

where is all this bad feed back look over the last two weeks
how many people are reporting scams?

can you guess how many ads gumtree has every week
the proportion of bad eggs is very small

not a nice thing to hope someone gest scammed
there are only a few ways to do it and once you know them
the chances of getting scammed are minimal
read the help section
in my view you will never styop scammers but you can educate people how not to get scammed

why are people emailing you about scams?

someone already tried that, it fell on its butt why?
cos nobody read it
but feel free to start one

watchout for copyright infringement tho. Very Happy
companies dont like that kind of thing

YOU HOPE THAT I GET SCAMMED ONE DAY - well you welsh prick, it's never going to happen, and do you know why ? Because i'm not a complete fcuking moron with an IQ in single figures - It's amazing how people get all tough and hard behind a keyboard, just give me a time and place to meet and you can say that to my face

@ Monty and Staffy - I will be holdong an auction in the very forseeable future, please register all your personal details (including bank account and pin numbers) to my new website:

www.iamgonnascamyouatmyauctionforparrtots.net

I'm going to go and lie down now because I feel all overcome at the remarks made by the welsh wanker from swansea

It would be nice if the police did do something but unfortunately there isn't much they can do. I have delt with them about scammers in this country where I provided their address, phone numbers, names of all the people involed but as the police said (and quite rightly) they can't really do anything unless I had lost money / property because of it. The police do actually have better things to be getting on with rather than wasting their time interviewing people and not being able to charge them due to no evidence.

Untill you have actually lost out to these scammers I wouldn't even bother the police with it.
