Hi I’m about to start my second year at uni (Computer Science course) and I’m preparing for some internships next summer, the problem is that I’m not sure that this year at uni I’ll learn enough things to be confident to start doing any programming or design job. I know that what is taught in university and what one needs in reality are often two different things. I really need to know the practical basics required for someone to be considered for an entry job in programming or web design. At the moment I have some rather basic knowledge of HTML, XHTML and CSS some Java and C as well. Is there anything else I need to be familiar with (e.g. Flash, Dreamweaver… ) that will make me a better candidate for an internship? I would also appreciate if you recommend some books from which I can gain relevant practical knowledge just by studying on my own. Your help will be much appreciated.

Ivan

I would strongly recommend that you add PHP, ASP, .net and SQL databases to your skills as these are the building blocks of most websites these days.

Knowledge of content management systems like Joomla and Drupal is also useful.

I have more or less given up hope of getting back into IT after a career break (family caring responsibilities and illness) but that has a lot to do with the ageist attitudes in IT - something you don't have to worry about.

I'm enjoying a successful second career in other directions now, but still like to keep up with web technology and will be doing a part time PHP/ASP course later this year.
