The last I was in I worked very hard and by doing so was recognised by the managers as someone who could a job which involved even more sh*t being thrown at them Shocked While those who swanned about were still in a role which less sh*t was thrown at because the managers could not trust them to cope and it would be their jobs on the line if they failed Laughing

I think the quality varies greatly within agencies and you need to look more at individuals.. a few years ago I had one agent from Reed who wasn't repsonsive at all, last year though I had someone who was really good.

You would say that luv because you're a recruitment consultant yourself! Very Happy It's hard to assess individuals given that everything that comes out of their mouth has no foundation. Which brute in a suit should someone choose? The lump of lard with the big gob? Or the self-deluded Brompton rider who writes recruitment blogs on Twitter? Very Happy

I wonder if the bitter people on here spent half as much time looking for a job and trying to build proper relationships with people (agencies included) than they do bitching about agents/consultants on here that they might actually have a FRICKING JOB!

This is not helpful at all headscrewedon. We happily invite contructive criticism but there is a line. Thanks

Here is some constructive criticism for all then.
Don't take it badly when someone tells you that you have a bad CV.
You might have good experience and be fantastic at whatever you do but that doesn't necessarily mean you are a good sales person and that would reflect in your CV. If your CV doesn't sell you then you have no chance of getting a job when up against candidates with better CVs, which is more than likely in the saturated jobseeking market that we have at the moment.

Recruitment consultants are running a business, if you have no immediate value to that business then they are unlikely to spend valuable time speaking with you. It makes no sense.

If the government spent all of their time dealing with European policies instead of focusing on what is needed in this country then there would be anarchy! Why should the government bother spending a large bulk of their time and resources dealing with policies that have absolutely no immediate benefit to the country that they run? It's the same token that says why should any business spend time doing something that isn't going to keep them in business?

People need to get it into their heads that agencies are businesses and act as businesses, they are not agony aunts or advice centres or charities, they are businesses!

Agencies play an important part in the recruitment world. They have invested millions of pounds into building networks, job boards, relationships, databases and benefits for their clients. It is a profession that cannot be replicated (yet) to work in-house effectively. If in-house recruitment teams worked 100% of the time then there would be no need for agencies. That is not the case.

If agencies were to disappear overnight then 1000's of people would be out of work - consultants, managers, IT staff, HR, Admin, Payroll and legal teams.

This would have a massive knock on effect on the economy and would affect almost everyone on this board who is complaining that they can't find work because of agencies. The millions of items of post they send would no longer help support the mail industry making many postal workers redundant (most likely causing more strikes), the huge infrastructure being used would be redundant causing a massive hole in finances of telecomms companies and reduce the amount of traffic and work for internet hosting companies. Stationary suppliers would suffer, office spaces would be left empty, competition for jobs would increase massively in the office work and sales sector, utilities companies would lose large amounts of revenue, the transport industry would suffer through lack of business journeys, the car industry would lose large amounts of corporate clients. Corporate hospitality would suffer as would the catering industry.

Recruitment agencies keep a lot of people in employment as well as finding many people employment. They put a lot of money into the economy. THINK PEOPLE Idea Exclamation

Are agencies really that bad? Or are you just unwilling to make that extra effort to work with these people to find a job.

Before blaming others, look inside and ask yourself if you truly have done enough to get a job. If you say yes and are unemployed then you are deluded!

I saw a programme called secret millionaire and on one episode a charitable man was explaining to the secret millionaire that a Polish man came to the UK and spent every possible hour jobseeking as soon as he landed and within 3 days he had a job! He also said that people in this country do no put that sort of effort or determination into their lifes and that they just expect a job and a better life just because they were born in this country.

People in this country think that many jobs are beneath them and look down on the people that do them yet they are happy to take the benefit money that these peoples taxes contribute to instead of working in a restaurant or a supermarket or as a cleaner?

Did you know that a dustman can make £24'000 a year as a rookie yet the average entry level IT person makes just £16'000?

I am sure there are plenty of people in less fortunate situations that would love to swap places. Think about that before accusing one profession of keeping you out of work. The only person stopping you working is YOU.

20/11/09 - Pledge as much as you can to Children in Need tonight (BBC1 from 7pm) they are less fortunate than you.

Constructive enough?
