Hiya,

Lived in London already for 4,5years previous, but last 6 months abroad. Am now back home in the Netherlands, when bf decided to kick me out of his house.

Not quite sure how to handle this whole looking for a room from abroad thingie, there's loadsa places going but obviously nobody is willing to give it to someone they ain't seen (flatshare) when they have 20peeps lining up to take them whom they can meet.

Am determined to get back to London, but really finding it impossible to get any reactions when I reply to ads due to me not being there... Can't afford to come over and doss, as parents don't agree...

Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated!

Find threads on recommended hostels in London or look up the short-term accommodation adverts on Gumtree.

As you say, people are unlikely to offer accommodation on a flat share basis to someone they've never met and you are not in the position to tell if the dynamics will work out with what amounts to complete strangers.

So organise some cheap short-term accommodation that doesn't lock you in when you start a proper search for long term accommodation.

How about get a short term "live-in" job in a hotel while you look for a flat?

At least then you have your own room and dont have to worry about being stuck in a hostel

I have let rooms to people I haven't met arriving from abroad, and haven't had problems yet.

Concentrate on the short term let section on Gumtree as people are likely to be more flexible as they know they will be living with you for a few motnhs, not years!

Go the extra mile in your response, tell them about yourself in your email, send a photo (smiling and preferably sober!), offer to phone them to chat. I can spot the dodgy ones by the tone of their mails - a two liner demanding to see the room or a list of prerequisites doesn't go down well in what is something of a sellers market.

Also they need some reassurance that you are in fact going to turn up so offer to pay a small deposit to secure the room.

Good luck - there's the perfect place out there somewhere for you.

Beste landgenoot...

Nou laat het me weten!
Groetjes,
Alexandra

Grtz

Hey make I actually run one. You can get the details through my profile. But I'd really suggest checking out a few different hostels. You can try www.bugeurope.com or hostelz.com. They also provide reviews from people who stayed there.

Good Luck.
