I didn't really spend much time shopping in the shopping malls over there (except when the heat got too much!), I stuck to the markets, which is where you'll get the bargains.
I spent 50 Aussie dollars on a custom made leather jacket and that was by far the most expensive thing I bought. Be prepared to travel there lightly but to travel home with at least double your luggage. Take as little as possible because you won't be wearing much due to the heat. Anything you desperately need that you don't take with you can be bought for next to nothing. A little money goes a long way in Bali for clothes and for food/drink etc.
Have a great time, I can't wait to go back! |

Have been to Bali 3 times.EVERYTHING is cheap.Mostly copies.Quality is poor.Do not pack much.Do not expect to buy any quality items .Heaps of fun.Bargain for everything.Usually pay 20-30% of asking price. All the action is in Kuta-beaches,pubs,clubs,accomodation.Best accomodation close to beach.Aproximate costs -(in Australian$(A$ =40p)
-t-shirt $2,Serong $5,dress$5-15,sunglasses$5,meals$5-$10,Beer $2($1 at the supermarket.Accomodation can be a little expensive but do not stay anywhere below 3.5 star.Make sure there is air-conditioning.If you want to chill out for a few days you must stay in Ubud(45 minute drive from Kuta.)Taxis are really cheap(only use Blue Taxis until you get a feel for prices.DO NOT change money anywhere that looks seedy because YOU WILL get ripped off.Very hot (even for an Aussie)so keep out of the mid-day sun.Have a great time-RELAX |

My husband and I just returned back from Bali last month (Feb 2006)
We have been in Bali for more than 10 times.
We have been shopping in the traditional market & the regular shopping mall... and we finally decided (after many many trips), it's really not worth of time to spend time bargain with the native...
You can get the same items at the local shopping mall with almost similar price, and you don't have to suffer from the extreemly hot air inside the traditional market, and have the headache deal with sooo many traders approaching you, without any hesitation to grab your arms or pull you from all direction. (not in a harmful way...but you will find out it's VERY ANNOYING)
Be VERY CAREFUL of the pick pockets, if you still decide to go to the traditional market. And, please BE EXTRA CAREFUL with the local balinese guys. Many of them now become the ilegal drug dealers (easy money)...and they always targeting the single female tourists. The penalty of any drug activities in Bali is dead penalty...and as the foreigners you are really helpless there if something bad happen. So, stay away from any strangers who try to be a "charming guy" on the street/ bars.
PS: you have to have a visitor VISA to come to Bali now. |
