Just tell us what you know of the city. Compare it to another city, tell us what you know to be good or bad about it from experience. Idont think its nice to be asking people to call you if they want to know about the city. Thats why its called a forum so that anybody can benefit from the information dispatched here just by logging on..
so Manny what do you know about Welwyn garden city? |

I was born in the hospital and have lived in WGC for 21 years. What EXACTLY would you like to know? More importantly, why do you want to know, this will help with my answers.

Well I would like to know because I am starting on the Tesco Graduate scheme in September, and have to relocate. My options are to move either to WGC itself, or somewhere in north london (perhaps finsbury park) where I can commute easily. I would like to know if it is easy/expensive to find accomodation in WGC, whether there are certain areas you'd recommend, and what the social life is like. I'm trying to judge whether it is worth the hassle and expense of living in london and commuting.
Thanks! |

Well, where can i start? In answer to your questions, Welwyn is a very nice town. The train station is in the middle of town and is next to the main shopping centre (next, m & s, boots, smiths ect). To get to the tesco site would require a 15 minute walk or a five minute ride from the station. About a year ago, the evening standard listed WGC as one of the cheapest places outside london, but within a 1 hour commute to live in.
The local paper, the Welwyn and Hatfield times (out on a wednesday and is online too) will list all your property needs.
The night life will depend on age ect. There's one very good pub in the town centre and a few not so good ones. The Cork (the good one) is right in the middle of town. It attracts a bit of a chavy crowd, but you don't get alot of attitude. Fridays are always busy, but Saturday nights are a bit more quite as people go to stevenage (chavs) or St. Albans (not chavs) with St. Albans being a VERY good night out.
If you can, live close to town, but another area you might want to look at is Panshanger. It's close to tesco and would be a bit cheaper.

| I live in stevenage and I have never liked WGC, there is nothing to do there. And there aren't many nice areas to live in WGC. Stevenage is nicer, but I agree that Hitchin is even better, but perhaps more expensive. If you can afford to move to north london than thats where I would be. St Albans is another nice town, Hatfield is not so nice. |

Hate to disagree, the Cork is not a nice pub. The only halfway decent pub in WGC is a 30 to 40 minute walk from the town centre (the Beehive). No-one would move to WGC for the nightlife though, which mainly depends on being 25 minutes from Kings X by train.
It's basically a deadly dull commuter town, though better than most with some decent town planning, nice houses, very low crime rates. However, Old Welwyn, a few miles up the road, is much, much nicer than Welwyn Garden City. You might want to look at moving there. It's one stop extra, two minutes up the line. Failing that, St Albans is by far your best bet in Herts, Hitchin is also OK. Stevenage and Hatfield are complete dumps. |

Hi garyghanniy
Did you have any luck finding a place to live? I'm starting with Tesco in 4-5 and need to find somewhere to move to (happy to share) - some advice from someone who has recently gone through the same process would be great!!
Where can you recommend? I have car and don't mind driving a bit, but wouldn't mind being a a fairly sociable area
Thanks for any help you can offer |

Hi
I came to welwyn garden city with a sceptical view and 2 suitcases about 10 days back. have spent 2 weekends and a week in this city and here is my summary :
+ - friendly, calm and pretty self sufficent city
_ - besides tesco, theres not much big biz around , you have to take the trains (Which is every half an hour by the way- so not an isue), to get to real towns
- the taxis overcharge all the time within town , so not good |
