Depends on what part of the Island you are going to. If it's the north part, everything is very touristy. Travel out of the tourist areas at your own risk. It is a VERY poor island but the people there are amazing! Very friendly and diverse. Be prepared for the unexpected and try to go outside of your comfort zone while you are there. I traveled to the Southern part of the Island to Santo Domingo and the surrounding villages. The poverty is astounding. Try to visit the markets, they have fantastic art work for sale at reasonable prices. You also have to buy a box of cigars! I'm a female and nver smoked in my life but i can now appreciate a good cigar from the DR. Some say they are even better than cuban's! Try something called Mufongo, I think that's how you say it. It's a special DR food with monkey in it. You must also try Presidente, it's there domestic beer and it's fantastic. Have a great time, It's been a few years since I've been but I still have great memories from my time there. Be sure to get out of the tourist traps and get off the beaten path!! Good luck.

I was there over christmas the nature there is so heartbreakingly amazing. especially at night full of stars and fire flies. it is also quite cheap. if you happen to be in puerto plata there is this really cool dominican american guide called rudy who will show you the non-touristy parts and get you anything you need. his email adress is sandon88@hotmail.com.
