Hi there,

We are two girls that have been living in this studio flat since Dec last year.

Two weeks ago the bathroom ceiling of the flat below colapsed due to water leakage from our bathroom. In the mean time just for that w/end they put us in a hotel, but since then they want us to use the neighbours shower. When this happend the landlord wanted us to vacate the premises straight away. But we said that we know our rights that is 2 months notice to be given to us to vacate, so since that the landlord just advised for someone to fix the bathroom but its been a week already and nothing has been done.

So we have been using the neigbour bathroom since, and for the inconvenience our neighbour is getting compensated for it, and we have asked to get compensated on rent for our inconvenience but the landlord has disagreed to it, and saying that the cause of the dampness and mould ( the place was already damped when we moved in as it states on the site inspection report) on the walls is due to us drying the clothes on the rack.

So we really feel we are treated unfair. The estate agent is quite rude to us and hardly acknowledges our calls/emails.
Do you think our comments are fair and should we get appropriate accommodation at no extra cost to us since we cannot use our bathroom neither the neighbours since she has declined to use her bathroom for longer term? Should we at least get compensated on rent, because we are paying for something that we are not using! ?

Cheers,

dear skyline,

from what you say it does seem that the landlord is being unreasonable, have any contractors been round to quote for the work needed?

the landlord,by law MUST provide you with utilities and must maintain these should they have been in working order when you moved in.

give shelter a call 0808 800 4444 england.shelter.org.uk they will be able to advise you what your next step is.

If the estate agent is a member of an organisation such as ARLA or NAEA you could always aproach them for help

Dear Miss Frisky,

Thank you so much for the info and advise. we searched info on the shelter website.

After few days of contacting them and asking them to be compensated, things kinda worked out, they put us for this last few days in another 1br appartment so we can shower.

They have compensated us for the 2weeks of inconvinience with 20% off the rent, and acctually let us leave cut the contract when we want. So we are leaving in 2 weeks time:) which is fine by us ..

The funny thing is that the property manager said to us that the landlord sympathyses with us . i mean ..hello!?! Smile

Anyways you have been much helpfull Smile

Thanks again
